Bananalobster
Just went down to the lfs in Rotorua and they have some gorgeous little blueish dwarf cichlids... their name is Blue faced apisto... Read a post on this site about the issues with using the wrong names with these lil dudes.. Mine have wobbly blue stripes on their faces, blue sheen all over with a steel blue/grey body.. Any idea what they really are?

HandS
they will probably be "apistogramma sp. steel blue". they are a hybrid and females can be very hard to come by Here are mine, and im shure they are a pair, if you have any more Q's about them, and i will try and dig up some info HTH
Bananalobster
Thanks hands! Oh dam, I thought I got a pair but Im not sure.. The more colorful 'male' is shaking his body at the supposed 'female'.. Do males do this to eachother? He is keeping 'her' in a corner, which I didnt think was a good sign... 'she' has also got suspiciously pointy fins too, although not as bright, perhaps a younger less dominant male?
HandS
Sounds like 2 males to me, just that the aggressor is claming teratory. Even if you cant get a female, they are great fish, i dont think id be without them again If you want to do a little reading check out http://www.forum.apistogramma.com/searc ... chid=72352 the shortage of females is not just a local thing, which is why im so skeptical that i have one..... i guess some fry would put my mind to reast
Bananalobster
hmm yes I did find that appisto site in my wonderings.. The smaller one was being kept behind the sponge filter when I woke up this morning Do you think I should wait it out a week or so and see if things settle down? I only got them yesterday. HandS
If there are plenty of hiding places, things should settle down. What size is the tank, what else is with them????
Bananalobster
Just them to in a 50cm L by 35cm W by 35cm H. double sponge filter and an internal at 150lph. Ive got him in a large breeding cage im a bit worried. I might just keep the one male and see if I can ask the petshop if I can have first dibs on any possible females being ordered in. MRSkz
I had two males in a 3 foot tank with heeps of hiding spaces. The dominate male finally killed the other one. In my oppinion they are the most aggresive dwarf cichlids I've come across. However my expereince is limited. It would be interesting to hear from someone that keeps heep of dwarfs to see what they think.
Bananalobster
hmm whenever I let him out of the breeding trap and leave him I come back to find him cowering behind the sponge filter. When I put him back in it and feed him he eats like a pig so I dont think hes getting injured.. Yet. Maybe I should have stuck with the original cheaper idea of keeping kribensis lol. If anyone is looking for a female wonderworld aquarium reckons they get one in ten males.. None left now but maybe next time.
Bananalobster
Let me know if you get some fry to the sexable age hands.. would love to be one of the few with a pair.
AMAZONIAN
I had a pair of the beasties, until the male decide he wanted to be single and killed his missus. They are pretty fish and are sold as "BLUE FACED" Dwarf Cichlids. I did the research and they are Apistogramma inconspicua. Not really inconspicuous with those marking eh? If you have a pair, good luck with breeding them. "IF ANYBODY HAS ANY TO SPARE" I would be interested in buying a couple of pairs please.
Bananalobster
hey amazonian. they are apparently a hybrid by the name A. sp. "Steel Blue", made in singapore or something? Females being very difficult to find. Im still crossing fingers that I have a pair, the larger of the two is quite aggressive though. it may be because they are in a small 50x35x35 (by themselves) though. moving them to a larger 180L soon. evilknieval69
I saw three of these in animal antics in the mount today... advertised and blue faced apistos.... I agree with amazonian that they are A. Inconspicua IMO EDIT: forgot to add, they were all male by the looks of them....
Bananalobster
For anybody trying to find females, apparently they turn very yellowish when ready to spawn. Mine is currently shaking and flaring its gills at its reflection in the tank like a siamese fighter lol.

2fishy
Hey All If ya in Animal Antics and you see a cichlid and you arent sure of its latin name, just rip the template off and it should be written on the back. I try to remember to write them on when i can the blue faced apisto has apistgramma inconspicua written on the back.

Im sorry Amazonian, but i have to disagree with you, all i have read says that these fish are the hybrid Apistogramma sp. steel blue. The Apistogramma inconspicua colours are not as bright, and they have a slightly differant body shape. It is abit like trying to pass Macmasteri off as Viejita, the fish are simalir but clearly diffrent. How long ago did you breed them, maybe you breed the true Apistogramma inconspicua?? eather way, still quite a achevement

I spoke to several importers (personal friends of many years) and they told me who brought them in and what they were called scientifcally and also what they cost. I checked my books "SOUTH AMERICAN DWARF CICHLIDS" Page 76 and all my research came up with the conclusion I arrived at. I'm not saying I'm 100% correct, but the facts are pretty strong. So Hands, sorry but I stick by my statement.
