shaneo
Gidday my 400 watt ballast is humming like crazy and vibrating against the floor so much that I turned it off cause it was driving us nuts. Anyone know what it could be ? I checked the wireing and its sweet aswell as the fuse ect but it wont stop!! I've swapped it with my other one I have aside for my upgrade but still need to fix the noisey one so I have two when I set up the new tank. Any ideas?? lduncan
I assume it's a magnetic ballast. Vibration / humm is fairly common in poorly constructed cores. Sometimes the steel can delimitate a little, and cause quite loud vibration humm with the mains frequency going through it. The fix is to get a new ballast. shaneo
stink one its only a year old! Is it still ok to use for a bit or is it a hazard?
lduncan
Still ok to use. But annoying, and the noise will most likely get worse with time.

Ira
All you can really do is make sure it's not vibrating against anything. Putting something around it will block any cooling and make it hot. Just learn to enjoy a nice 50 hertz hum.
shaneo
Sweet, changed ballasts and shes all quiet again. Nothing but the fizzing of my skimmer. Thanks Layton
