ljtan55
I have the Eheim 2213 bought it off trademe for 70 bucks. IMO its great! So quiet, need to touch it to make sure its on, and without the trays you can put anything you want it in, of any quantity. Parts are pricey, but it really just keeps on going and going. maran
Self priming thingi is the one u push up and down to started the water going through the system-bit like a manual pump. Esp if the hose is bit long, the pumps struggle to get it going. I knwo fluval 104 and 204 got one-labeled as "start".

richms
I find that once I have water in the hoses that I never need the priming thing again, its only when I take the hoses off to clean them that its ever usefull, and on my fluval 404 it doesnt pull the water thru fast enough to get rid of the air at the top so the syphon usually takes about 4-5 goes to get started. Wheras sucking on the hose works every time.
me love fishy
With my Eheim 2217 I find that I mostly don't need to do anything and that it will eventually clear the air out of the filter on its own. If it doesn't I tend to turn it on and off and turn the hoses off and on and basically "fiddle" with it to get it going properly again. Its not too much of a hassle really and easy to tell when its going properly as it basically makes no noise at all.
sharn
i was quite happy the other day when i found out i can start my Rena by just pumping the lift lock clamps for the hoses- a few pumps and it started to siphion itself and once full i just plugged in. CraigMcN
I used to have to muck about a lot with my fluvals to get them started, but have a method now that works every time... make sure the output is above the water level, and stick a bucket under the end of the hoses. Open the aqua-lock (or whatever it's called) and it'll drain all the water out of the output hose, along with all the gunk from inside the hoses. Let a bit of water siphon out of input hose to make sure it's full of water. close the valve, reconnect and open the valve again. You'll here a satisfying gurgling sound as the filter refills. Power it up once the gurgling stops. I don't own any other canisters except fluval 04's, and have had no problems at all (now I can get them started again easily C.
