Bino
Maybe a stupid question but... Am I supposed to leave the light on for them 24/7 or should I turn it off at night? I have a small 10 gal tank with 2 peacocks and 2 alge eaters. Thanks
SpidersWeb
You MUST turn them off at night.
TimTam22
Lights are mostly for plants- I leave my lights on just untill I go to be and then put them on again when I get up
TimTam22
So the fish can have down time/rest at night
sharn
yep, turn them off at night time like us fish have body clocks and need down time, some people try to mimick outside light but i just turn them on when i get up and turn them off when i go to bed. as timtam said lighting is really just for plants or viewing pleasure, some of my tanks never have lights on but some have them 12 hours a day (planted). the only time people normally leave lights on 24/7 is if they have moonlighting or are breeding certain fish. alanmin4304
I have a heavily planted 300 litre tank with the main lights on a timer that comes on at about 5am so to help avoid scaring the fish when they switch on I have a 15 watt incandescent that stays on 24/7. When the main lights go off it looks like moonlight and the incandescent also improves plant growth.
AMAZONIAN
Hi Have you ever tried to sleep with the light on 24/7. Dont be so cruel to your fish either.
me love fishy
Yep like everyone has said, fishies need darkness too. Good question to ask to help keep your fish healthy, though. I have my lights on for about 16 hours a day on a timer and about half an hour before lights out, the fish are getting in there sleeping positions, quite funny to watch. All the best
whetu
Timers are pretty cheap (you can get them for as little as $5). I have my lights on for 13 hours a day and off for 11 hours. Around about 12 on and 12 off mimics tropical daylight time. Also make sure your fish have some "shade" to go into - fish don't have eyelids so they can't block out strong light. Shady plants are an easier solution than buying all your fish sunglasses
TimTam22
Where can you get the timers for $5?? as I would like to set up my lights with timers........
SpidersWeb
The Warehouse $5 for a standard one $10 for digital I prefer the standard one.
AMAZONIAN
I find the digital is more reliable. It doesnt lose or gain time like the cheaper mechanical ones.
Catfishmichele
I turn the lights on at around 7am and turn them off before I go to bed.
