Johannes Visser
I've got Electric yellows (labs) and Red zebras in the same tank?? Only thing I want to know is, would they interbred or not ???? I though they would not but I have just been told they would. Witch is true and why?? :-? malawi_man
They could, but most likely not. The main worry would be if there was only females of one of the species and they wanted to breed, so they bred with the other species male. ryanjury
Yeah I guess its the same old story any african will cross breed given the chance, best bet is to make sure you have males and females of each fish and watch them, even if you have males of one species the more dominant male may just bash them and breed with their females anyway.. I have seen a few times on cichlid forum people posting in unidentified asking what their fish is and everyone says its the common electric yellow zebra cross breed so I assume is common as well. I think ive seen a few that look like them in shops a different shaped fish thats an off yellow with no black markings at all. I guess the problem would be if you crossed it back to a zebra you would get something that looks like a zebra but an odd shape.. I guess thats why electric yellows and zebras can get so messed up.. malawi_man
i get worried about my fish cross breeding sometimes but it almost never happens to me if there is a mate for them of the same species. I was a bit skeptical about my kenyi because my male isn't the boldest fish and about 5 other males could easily beat him, NORMALLY. But when the female wanted to breed he just went PSYCHO!!!!! ryanjury
Yeah with our fish its different we've had to shuffle a few around tanks so they breed true otherwise the dommiant male bashes them and breeds with their girls.. Needless to say we usually end up watching all the spawnings or grow the babies to a size where you can easily tell they're pure so we dont have problems, even after spawning you can easily tell who's bred because he'll still be smashing everyone and still trying to breed with the holding female. herefishiefishie
If you have colonies of both in say a 4 footer as an example you should be fine. I have mixed colonies & have done so for ages. As long as each male has he area. The species are diffferent enough not to mix easily.
