shaneo
Believe I have a problem here! Think they came in on a shrimp that came from a LFS. Four deaths in 6-8 weeks Yes water quality is good, no changes to tank. So I'm gunna guess parasites :-? each of the dead fish bugged the cleaner shrimp before dieing days later. How can I treat it ? every suggestion welcome. thanks Mods please give it a day or two before you move it

TM
most fish in the ocean have worms or something when they arrive. The shrimps would not have given it to them. I have used levamisole. Soak some dried shrimps or nori etc in it and feed to them twice over three days.
shaneo
Cheers TM where do I get Levamisole??
shaneo
Could it possibly be external parasites ? There is nothing visible and they are dieing in perfect two week intervals. Real wierd :-?
TM
Could it possibly be external parasites ? There is nothing visible and they are dieing in perfect two week intervals. Real wierd :-? Levamisole is the active ingredient in "levicare" a sheep or pig wormer. You buy it in a 4% solution. Most rural or large animal vets will have it. If it is external you can use copper or negavon or curex (if you can still find it)

Real wierd :-? What were the fish? did you get them all at the same time? Did they do anything before they died, flicking? darting? bumping into things? were they eating fine? As for the other symptoms..... nothing, they just hung around the c.shrimp heaps then a day or two later they're on there side and die. Clown, sailfin tang, lawnmower blenny and now my yellow longnose butterfly is lookin sad and thats gunna gut me if he goes the same way The clown actually had a bloated gut :-? but he was a bad over eater? its hard to tell but there is something real wrong
Fay
I have had four unexplained deaths this year didn't think of worms The condition of the four was all good, does anyone know if they get fat guts or do they get skinny if they have worms? rossco
Internal parasites should have the effect of depriving the host of nutrients so fish should lose condition. Often associated symptom of really crappy crap as its internal digestion disrupted. So ya sorta get the effect of food goin in one end and comin out the other without slowing down much in between. Not to be confused with nori...
TM
They can also block the tubes etc up which can cause the bloated look. Do you use any other cleaning products around the tank? Does the temp move up and down heaps.?
shaneo
I've got a temp controller and my temp only shifts by less than 1 deg. Only cleaning near by is the kitchen (2-3 metres away) and we dont use any sprays. I was guessing parasites cause of the way they hang around the shrimp who cleans them at any chance. chimera
you got other fish though that are still alive though? so only new additions or existing fish too? at a guess i dont think it would be an invert - chances are it would die before a fish would. plus the cleaner was probably just doing its job and cleaning the fish as opposed to infecting it. maybe it's the same disease that went around about a year ago that caused some to lose quite a few fish. i remember pies lost at least half a dozen
skuzza
Hey fay did you get an autopsy. It might have been a heart attack.
shaneo
at a guess i dont think it would be an invert - chances are it would die before a fish would. I think it may have came with the 1st cleaner I got that died, got it from a LFS in Albany, which was my 1st (and only) purchase from there, since then all down hill. Got a 2nd cleaner else where and he's the one trying to clean them all up just before they die :-? I think the worst thing about marine fish keeping is trying to diagnose problems, I feel guilty that I cant figure it out. I have my female clown, bangaii and YTD left and the deaths were both new and existing fish. Mate she's a tricky one to solve
