wasp
Looks to me like something else is bothering it. The sarcophyton perhaps?
lduncan
I would suspect nudibranchs. They are small. Look for them at night, they seem to hide underneath the coral during the day.
JDM
Looks to me like something else is bothering it. The sarcophyton perhaps? what is a sarcophyton? :-? it has been in the same spot for quite a while now, it seems to be well away from everything, the pic dosnt really show the gaps though. wasp
Yes, that thing on the right with the little hairy things sticking out the top. Sometimes called a toadstool coral. But better heed Laytons advice incase it is nudis, wouldn't want them getting away on you if you have them. Do you have a 6 line wrasse in the tank? JDM
i dont have a 6 line, i want one but i need to catch my clown tang and sell him before i can add anymore fish, i have had a bait catcher in there for 4 days with nori in it but he is too smart for that. anyone know a good way to catch a clown tang? how do i get rid of nudis? what do they look like? wasp
There was a good thread on monti eating nudis a while back, Layton has had them & some others but I can't remember who. Anyway I'm sure these people can chime in with some good advice. One thing I do know, they are hard to eradicate, and that in a tank with none of their natural predators, they simply continue to multiply until all their food (your monties) are gone. If you do have them, best to deal to them hardcore now, while they are still in a relatively small area. But let others with experience give you some advice & just confirm you actually do have them, before doing anything too drastic!
JDM
http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt7404.html?postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 i think this is the thread that you were talking about, sounds like trouble to me :-? i hope i dont have them, nasty little things
skuzza
This has happend to my monti before for no reason i could see.I find just break of the dead bits off and they are away. If you dont as i found out it can keep sreading and or slow the growth down.

JDM
dam nudis!!!!!!   i took my reef apart tonight to remove my clown tang, in the process i had a look at my monti, sure enough there were around 10 or so nudis hiding under its edge, i put it in a bucket of water from my tank and killed as many as i could, i have just had another look and there is at least one still there. should i persist in trying to manualy remove them or should i try a fresh water dip? wasp
Yes, keep removing them. Some people use a turkey baster to blow them off, then syphon them from the bottom of the bucket. The big thing is though that there will probably be eggs stuck around the base, they need to be scraped off also. A fresh water dip can do just as much harm to the coral as to the nudis. Excellent you isolated it, and excellent you caught it early! But I'm only going by what I've read, where's those people who have actually beaten these things to help out? Come on guys! JDM
yep, i remember it from you showing me, will it kill the nudis and there eggs? can you spare me some? i found one of the frags i got from you down the back of my reef, amazingly enough it is cranking along, would have grown 5mm since i lost it! thats what you get from buying good frags i guess! cookie extreme
thats what you get from buying good frags only the best. hollywood has the reef dip nomaly in stock. its pretty cheap too considering how long it last's. my bottle is now well over 2 years old and still a bit in it. but then again may be i should get some of those ndi's to remove some monti! its a real pain to scrape of the monti's to stop them overgrowing and killing my acro's. JDM
break them off, ill take the scraps off your hands thats the big pain living in hamilton, im always coming up to auckland to get stuff! i should start a little marine shop in my garage, and stock all the good gear that i cant get here! rossco
Reef dip contains "elemental iodine complexed to a protective slime - effective against bacteria, fungus, protozoans." Don't know whether this would kill the greeblies you might have? Mainly treats infections by the sounds of it.... :-?
puttputt
Your reef dip won't work, or iodine dips. I had a huge outbreak, and have manged to eliminate them. Keep doing just as you are. You need to continually check every monti, remove the adults (siphon), scrap the eggs off and siphon out. repeat as required - I checked every 2 or 3 days. You'll get to a stage where you'll only find 1 or 2 and sometimes none for a while, but keep checking, they will come back. When you have them under control, buy a wrasse - 6 line, and it should take care of the stragglers. I don't think they will scoff heaps of them, but mine at least has obviously cleaned up the last few, as my tank has been free of them for months and I had hundreds as the infested over xmas while I was away for 3 weeks. I took out my plain monti cap as it was the favourite food for the nudis, and had encrusted onto the rock, but still battled with 4 other montis and won, so chin up, you need to be on top of them and realise it will take months to beat. JDM
im a week down the track and i havnt seen any nudis on my montis for 3 days! had a real good look tonight and i beleve they are gone, there eggs however are probably still around. i will keep an eye on it but dose anyone know how long the eggs take to hatch? are the eggs visiable? i cant see anything under it.
puttputt
They are visible on the montis, but i read somewhere that they can lay them on nearby rocks etc making them very hard to find. They will be there somewhere, but you doing all the right things, just keep looking.
