  1. Hi all, do you guys think I could keep a school of small yellow eye mullet in a 24 degree tank with some tropical fish from around lord howe island like surgeonfish and wrasses? There will be some corals but only ones that can handle slightly colder temps like wilsoni brain corals. Wikipedia says they can handle 14-28 degrees but prefer 18-24. The tank would be 900-1500 litres and be shallow and long, would probably also plant some mangroves to make it sort of a coral estuary tank. Does anyone have any other recommendations for fish that can be kept in these sort of temperatures from nz. Cheers
  2. I was planning on using the saltwater for a tropical tank, as in 1.024 - 1.026 sg, if the salinity is too high should I just dilute with rodi water?
  3. Do you reckon the water from around waitemata harbour is fine to use? I had a look at the water quality report from 2019 but i'm not really sure. Also will I have to adjust the salinity? Thanks edit: would a 270x220x50cm (3000 litres) be big enough for a carpet shark or skate and a pufferfish? Also do you think I could use a 2 hp chiller for 3000 litres or more?
  4. Does anyone know if i'm able to use straight natural sea water (apart from some mechanical filtration to remove particulates). I will be getting the water from clean areas and at the right time as well. I'm planning a 300x300x60cm aquarium inspired by the massive bullet shaped aquarium at kelly tarltons in the cafe area. It will basically be like an above ground pond but made from glass. I'm planning to only keep soft corals and macroalgae, could I avoid dosing elements (alk, calcium and magnesium) as long as I do weekly 10% water changes? Also could I get away without a skimmer if I have a large (800 litre+) refugium and a low-medium bioload? Any help appreciated, Cheers
  5. Could probably go up to 10,000 litres if i'm using seawater from the ocean and not buying synthetic salt, would this be too small for a horn/carpet shark and or longtail skate long term?
  6. Sorry, this isn't to do with the original topic of the thread but do you know if there are any rays/skates and sharks that are keepable in home aquaria here? My max tank size would probably be around 2200 litres if that isn't too small and what would you feed them? Thanks
  7. Yeah, I read up on the dardanus hermit crabs, apparently they are all very aggressive and eat fish and aren't really very good at cleaning up
  8. Changed it a bit as mado only eat live food, also dimensions are 200x120x60cm 1 Common Leatherjacket 1 Red Gurnard 3-5 Sweep 1 Spotty Maybe blue maomao, porcupine fish
  9. Hi, can anyone add/comment on my stocking list for a 200x120x40cm aquarium (I could go higher but im trying to make it a shallow thing) 1 Leatherjacket - Definitely want Blue Maomao - Optional Red Mullet Goatfish - Optional 1 Red Gurnard - Definitely want New Zealand Demoiselle - Optional 3 Mado - Definitely want Red Banded Perch - optional Paketi - optional Sweep - optional Everything except for the gurnard, mado and leatherjacket is open to suggestions/change and im not sure of group sizes so any suggestions would be appreciated. (this list is too large for the aquarium size so im looking for help reducing this list) Also where can I collect saltwater/sand within auckland region? Thanks
  10. Yeah ive looked at the mpi lists - but do you know anything about the anenome hermit crabs?
  11. Hi, this is my first post on here but I have been lurking for a while. Does anyone know any cuc/clean up crew that we are allowed here in nz/ can collect for reef tanks that eat algae apart from the turbo snail? I know we can have the longspine urchin but im reluctant because of their sting - my tank is 130x68x35cm. Also I know there are tangs and stuff but I don't really want any in my aquarium for feeding and size reasons. Does anyone know if Dardanus Gemmatus/Jeweled anenome hermit crab eats algae?? Needs to be reef safe and good with 24 degree water
