  1. Well, no luck organising an October meeting! Is anybody interested in November? It would be Tuesday November 15, somewhere around Howick. Maybe my place near Meadowlands. Please speak up if you want to keep this going, otherwise we may as well forget it and join other clubs (despite the travelling distance!). Cheers Mike 021.772.478
  2. Brian seems to have disappeared, so we need to organise a meeting. Anybody want to attend? Just give a ring during the day on Monday on 021 772 478 and we'll see what we can arrange. If that's too short notice, maybe the following Tuesday would suit. Thanks. Mike.
  3. Does anybody know if there will be a meeting next Tuesday October 18? If so, where? That venue in Cascades Road worked well a few weeks ago. Brian, where are you?
  4. Thanks Rocketman - I bought some from Bunnings on Sunday. Now all I have to do is find some way of attaching them to heaters, filters, etc. I'm going to try glueing them with some silicone adhesive.
  5. Has anyone got any good ideas about those hopeless plastic suction cups supplied with heaters, filters etc.? Mine always go hard, and lose their suction. With my Eheim internal filters, I overcome the problem partly by suspending the filter with a piece of soft copper wire, bent over the side of the tank with a heavy bolt dangling outside the tank as a balance weight. It sort-of works but is not very elegant! Unfortunately most of these suckers have non-standard ends to connect to the heater or filter, so I don't think its just a case of buying a new suction cup. Are they available as spare parts from Eheim, etc.?
  6. If the aerator is discharging bubbles below the filter suction point, it is likely that air has got into the filter/pump and it's lost suction. I've got a couple of these filters, and always have trouble starting them pumping again when they are full of air after cleaning the filter medium. The only way I get it started for sure is the lower the whole filter unit below the water level, wiggle it around a bit while plugging in the power. Riase the filter up a bit and watch until it starts pumping. Then turn the power off and VERY quickly lift the unit into its proper position and wack the power back on. Incidentally, it's always best to wash the filter medium in tank water, so the bio action does not have to start from square one again. Good luck!
  7. We are more advanced than that,Kim! We had a meeting last night, and now have a President (Eon), Secretary (Eric), and Treasurer (me) but no money yet. Meetings probably 3rd Tuesday of each month, so next one is Tuesday April 19th. Location then will be Eon's place. Someone tells me you were on TV3 on Monday evening talking fish - pity I missed it.
  8. Eon, that suggestion of the third Tuesday each month sounds logical but it would mean a meeting this Tuesday. How would that suit you and the other interested folk? I'll make sure to attend the next meeting, whenever it is!
  9. Hi Eon, Do you have a time and place for your next meeting? I opted to visit the North Shore Club on the evening you held your first meeting - unfortunate clash of dates!
  10. The feeder sits on a Perspex cover about 25mm above the water. There is then another cover above the feeder, which is secured to keep out the fiddlers. These are in public spaces.
  11. Thanks, Eon. Count me in. My place is available also. Mike
  12. Hi HummingBird. I'm interested in that South Auckland club as I'm just down the road from you in Howick. If anybody connected with that club sees this, could they PLEASE give us some information on activities - or even advise us if it's died. If there is enough interest, maybe we should organise a meeting in the area and see if we can get something off the ground. Meanwhile, I'm intending to visit the North Shore Club on March 1st - I hope that's the correct date.
  13. No, Jo, the air is at leasst 300mm away and I'm sure the splashing is caused by hungry (or greedy?) fish. Some of the mixed food is floating pellets, and maybe that's what they are chasing when they splash.
  14. Yes, we put ours over a cut-out but that is where all the splashing occurs! I guess the main problem is that the water level is only about 25mm below the feeder - where we have them higher up, there is no problem. We have stuck a curved thin metal shield on the feeder, and this helps, but the odd tank still causes problems. I solve that by using an Eheim on the problem tanks.
  15. My experience is that the Eheim is best. We have a problem with the Nutramatic (the one with the resettable clock) as the food gets wet from fish splashing as they go for the food as it falls in the tank. The Nutramatic which gives a feed every 12 hours seems foolproof, but you can't set the feed times.
  16. How do we get a copy of this Aquarium World? I've never seen it - maybe it's for members only?
