  1. Greetings all, am looking to start a new tank (have got a 120x40x40 = about 180ltr) waiting for me to fill. Am planning initially on having some electic yellows and maybe dems. Will be running a fluval 305 filter etc. First question, do I need to find some egg-crate (??) to put under the limestone, or am I safe in putting it directly on the glass bottom? I'm planning on using pool filter sand as the substaite in this tank which will be a first for me. Second, what sort of stocking levels can I get with a Fluval 305 as the filtration? At the moment I'm thinking something like 6 electric yellows and 6 dems as well as 3 GBAs, and look to adding more once things have settled into place? When I throw that info into the stocking tool it seems to think I've not got enough filtration but I'm not sure I believe it completely. Appreciate your guidance :-) Regards, NzQuiet1

  3. Yeah that was what I was thinking when looking at the auction, but I figured, once I get them home then I can realign them back to normal environments. The Oscar is something I have always wanted, but doesn't really fit in with my other community tank, so may well look to passing him onto somebody more experienced that me. agree there, was surprised no other bidders on that one. I love this description :-) Very well put. In checking the various sites and pictures around, I'm thinking you may well be right here. Its the closest match. Will be collecting the tank on Sunday so then will know for sure :-) Thank you all for your input and for ID'ing and confirming what I had. Much appreciated. NzQuiet1.
  4. Greetings All, having just purchased a good deal (I hope) on TM, I now need some professionals to id exactly what I have purchased. I believe there is an Oscar and Silver Dollar, but unsure what the blue one is, can somebody enlighten me ? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=263976335 Regards, NzQuiet1
  5. tis really bad, when one realises that I have missed out on visiting this wonderful place with my kids for the last couple of years when we are in Tauranga for the Inlaws. Loved the video, and now have a new year's resolution to make sure I visit when we are next up that way. Looks like a day will be needed though :-) Regards, NzQuiet1.
  6. does anybody know if UV's are good for keeping the evil black hairy alage under control?
  7. A quick question, sort of along these lines, as I'm not thinking of looking into a nano as well. Does anyone just use stright sea water collected from the local marina or beach? Do you do anything to it, or use it straight? Appreciate any hints as am only just sorting through what I should be needing and worrying about. Regards, Nzquiet1.
  8. Hi All thanx for your suggestions. A couple of handy rocks from the garden have done the trick quite nicely, and seem to be fitting in quite well (at this stage at least). I didn't have to hit the river in the end, the suggestion of using garden supplied rock was the hint I needed :-) or reminder ;-) Thanx all.
  9. Not really, am looking to adding river rock into my current freshwater tropical tank, rather than create a river ecosystem type tank. But one hell of an interesting read in that thread though :-)
  10. Greetings All, have recently started thinking that I want to re-scape my current tank and include some rock etc in there, but just had a thought, is local river rock okay to use in a tank, or should I avoid using at all costs? Any other problems that I should worry about... Appreciate any hints/tips etc. Regards NzQuiet1
  11. HI Marchoshark, yes I would also like to know this, at least for Welly region.. :-) Anyone out there got the answer on SAE's??
  12. Hi all, thanx for the input so far. Re the flying foxes, where would you get some in the Wellington region, ideally in Kapiti, but anywhere is fine.
  13. Greetings all, my main tank and Aqua One 850 is rather full of the black hairy stuff, which is mainly due to me being slack, and the fish not being worried by it. Anyway, I'm currently planning on a mass clean out of the tank and rescaping for a change, so will move the fish to a temp tank, and then empty the main one fully. The big question is if I wash out all the gravel/ornaments etc, will this be enough to get rid of the black hairy algae, or should I also hit the tank with the flourish excel.?? From what I have read, you double dose the flourish excel for the tank, which will take out all the plant life, and hopefully leave the fish along, although if I go this way I will move at least halve of them out. :-) Any comments/recommendations, as would greatly appreciate them. Regards, NzQuiet1 (Shane)
  14. Hi All, have been watching as the updates came in, and I'm please there hasn't been any absolute negatives, and some good hints to avoid problems that have been found. Will look into this one a bit closer as it seems a very good unit. Once again thanks to all for your feedback on the AR units.
  15. Hi All, am looking to upgrade my current tank to a nice new one, and have been trying to find info on the AR850 which looks like quite good, ie 165 ltrs, with built in hood and filter plus lights. What are your opinions on this unit, or can you maybe suggest alternatives?? Thanx in adv. NzQuiet1.
