i trying to find a catfish for my tank to eat the algae my 1st thought was bristlenose but have read and told they need driftwood which i dont have in my tank or wish to put in because i am really happy with my rock landscape. was also told they will eat your plants and thats another thing i dont want to happen. Are there any catfish what would suit the job they would have a firemouth as a companion. I am also getting 3 large sae are they effective algae eaters when big? thanks for all the help

He is forever sifting the sand for food and poking around his rocks looking for food. The rocks are only for decoration I have build caves for him in the past but he never uses them. When he displays and attacks the glass when we have vistors he moves and stirs up impressive amounts of sand so much so he leaves little craters in the sand. From his behaviour i can understand why the mexican name for them means little bulls. cant wait to see what he does when hes full growen.

hmm two heaters now would drive him nuts but then again knowing fred he would set up a schedule mon tues wed left hand side heater thur fri sat right hand side and sun herding. i can just see him sitting there going my bubbles like the fish of nemo lol well he makes my day fun, first job this morning is replanting three new plants i have put in and checking my rocks are still stable they seem to have move hmmm i wonder how that happen.
-
i have tried moving the heater he just finds it and the game starts again as for herding when hes in the mood it doesnt matter which corner they are never the same. This morning he found a new toy i accidently drop my fish food lid in. The result was fred biting and pushing it around his tank he seem dispointed when i took it back out. thankfully he never seems to have a problem with me cleaning his tank. hmmm maybe im just my fishs housemaid.
-
he is a character all right before he move into his new tank he was quite nervous and shy. Now hes always swimming around the tank showing off so i have taken that as a sign off aproval.

my silly firemouth has decided the heater in his tank is the enemy.Every time the heater turns on and the light comes on he attacks imppresively flaring his gills and colouring up beautifully. He also has a problem when we have vistors he flares his gills and attacks the glass throws sand around quite a impressive display he stops if i go near the tank but goes completly bonkers if the vistor goes closer. when hes not pretending to be a guard dog he becomes a sheep dog and herds the smaller fish into a corner of the tank at first i thought he was being nasty but on watching he does'nt bite at them he just pushs like a dog does with sheep. does anyone else have a silly fish like mine.

sorry I put this in the wrong place, I didnt realise they were killies. The blue look was a trick off light they have since more out from the back of the tank and now definitly look yellow on the fins with red edging. The body still look very similar to a females guppys in colouring. Will try and get a decent photo to post thanks for the help
-
no mine are that yellow at all, to tell the truth there is very little yellow on them at the moment maybe it is my lighting but they look more metallic blue. In the shop i did not noticed the blue they seem to react with the lighting to show colours. The colours seems mainly on fins, apart from that colouring is very similar to a female guppy

hi i have done something i dont normally do and brought a fish well 4 actully of this breed for my tank. i have been trying to find more info on the net but are not coming up with anything are they also knowing by another name. They were suggested for my tank by a salesperson because i was looking for something for the mid to upper layer of my tank. I am really kicking myself because i didnt even ask simple questions such as temp and lenght of this fish i have found the yellow panachax lenght to be 4inches is this the same fish? Tank mates are a firemouth and 2 kribs yes i know this mix is not good but they are refuges from my daughters tank and are not having any troubale. question is do the panachax mixs with this group. Or have i goof up thank you very much for your help

hi i am currently settting up a tank and are about to buy filter material. the question that my other half has raise is why do we need to buy fancy filter material wouldnt stone chips do the same thing i cant think of a reason why they cant as we only need surface area for the bacteria am i missing something? The other question he has is why do you need to replace it ever 6mths. I have try to find a answer for this on the net but have fail to find something. thanks for all your help
-
both my firemouths still have a blue look to their eyes, when i bought them they had no colour at all i thought that was because they were young. they were crowd in a tank with no cover thought bar small piece of driftwood. They seem to have divided the tank in half the smallest stays pretty much down one end. The bigger one swims around a bit more but has a corner where he sleeps. The smallest sleeps in the other corner behind a rock
-
i have try geting photos but camera not very good, but i think stress is probaly the answer because it is the smallest firemouth what gets the black stripes, i keep both of them in a heavily planted tank but have noticed the bigger one annoying the smallest. there is only 2 firemouths in the tank and two cories. theyare being moved into a bigger tank as soon as it has cycle new tank will be 215liters current tank is only a 100liters.
-
one of my firemouth has very dark black stripes down his sides, while my other has very slight black stripes. however when i look at them on the net in photos none seem to have these stripes. Is this because they are still quite young.
-
I was wondering what would be the best tank mates with them. Was hoping for some cories would this work?

Having just lost my favourite fish to accident chasing a mossie, I am now unfornately looking for a replacement. I like the sound of what i have read of the firemouth cichlid. My query is are these fish suitable for a person who is still relatively new to freshwater fish (tropical) had goldies before they grew to big for tank, curently just got a little tank of tropicals 55litres. Which leads me to my second question would a 215litre tank be big enough for one or are they better as a pair. I am also confuse by information i have found are they a community fish or not. thanks for any help recieve

Worst mistakes you made resulting in fish death...
bamweevil replied to Funkytown's topic in Freshwater
my first disaster was my first tank knowing nothing much about fish except they needed age water. I brought my brand new tank home with new fish as well which were being added to 3 other golds which were my daughters which she had keep in a so called fish tank more of a box really. knowing nothing about cycling and believing what i was told that my tank would be find maybe a bit understocked i was told my tank could hold up to 9 fish hmm only 215litres boy dumb arent i you guess it ammonia spike back to shop i go to be told they sound like they had finrot more meds the results my daughters in tears and myself feeling like i was the worst person in the world because i killed all 6 fish. thankfully found this site and went to organisms here in christchurch who were great puting up with constant questions. I now have a great pact off plant wrecking finger nibbling goldies -
i have heard and been told goldfish are herbivores but by the same token have been told by many that they ominvore i would side with ominvore due to behaviuors i have seen in ponds and with my own. It can be quite surprise how fast they react to insects on the water surface of their pond or tank. My fantail dispose of a resonable size spider in short time which got in their by accident. Goldfish seem to have the opion if it looks eatible it must be eatible. On the subject of plants they seem to target new growth or what i assume is new growth because it is brigth green colour most of the damage mind do is breaking the plants or pulling/knocking as they forage in the shingle
-
wow thats a beautiful tank wish my tank could look as good but with 4 young plant terriorist (goldfish) abit of mission impossible they either eat them or pull them out
-
well went shopping and got my new additions not exactly what i was going for at first some how between leaving the car and arriving back at the car danios i was going to buy turn into guppies hmm amazing the persuasion power 11year with a good school report has.
