  1. Ok Thanks again Nays The plants seem to be getting on ok, It's early doors but the val is putting out runners so it must be getting sufficient light now
  2. Yep will get another 30' it hasn't been quite a year since I got the tank but its not far off. If you don't mind I would like to ask you what ferts you use? My plants are not hard to grow but I'm just interested as would I like to add a few more demanding ones in the future. Thanks Nays
  3. Thanks nays, Went to lfs today and there was none of the aqua one 30' tubes, picked up a power glo cheaper anyway and I'll see how that goes. Hopefully the plants will get more green back. Marty
  4. Hi All Could I please get advice on which T8 tube to replace my dead 30' one? The tank is a Aquaone AR850 165L 84x44x59H and it holds 2x30' 25W and 1x23.5' 20W, The remaining 30' tube is a aqua one daylight tube and the 23.5' tube is an aquaone tropical tube. The tank is low tech with Cryptocoryne wendtii, watersprite, a bit of java moss and some recently added twisted val. Since it has been added the twisted val leaves have started to go brown at the ends so Im thinking I might need a bit more light? I did add flourish excel every few days before I added the Vals but seen that it might melt them so I have stopped adding it. Also Since the tube has stopped working my watersprites new growth has been more white than green? All advice appreciated I was looking for a daylight tube ~ 6700k as I have read that will be the best to grow plants but I cant seem to find a 30' daylight tube here in Christchurch either in pet stores or hardware stores or trademe! Does anyone know where I could get one? My lfs seems only to have the aquaone tubes, powerglo's and aquaglo's in 30', what would you guys use? I have searched this forums and seen a few people saying powerglo is good for a planted aquarium Thanks in advance guys Martin
  5. Does anyone have a stand suitable for a Juwel Korall 60 (55 litres , 61x36x31cm) they do not need / are wanting to sell? Prefer local to Christchurch and surrounding areas. Or does anyone suggest any tank/stand makers in Christchurch who would look at a small job like this? Thanks in advance
  6. Hi Guys Looking to buy 2-3 Bolivian Rams, as title suggests would like a young pair. Ideally Christchurch area but could travel a bit further to pick up. Thank You
  7. Hey I'm looking for some used filter media to start the cycle on my new 140 litre tank. Anyone in Christchurch willing to help? I'm more than willing to pay for it... Thanks in advance Martin
  8. Thanks Pennyleigh I turned out I had a faulty impeller, the rattle got worse, I know the filter was going to make some noise but it got really bad! The store I got it from have got another on order for me as they had no replacements in stock. They were nice enough to lend me a internal filter while I wait for the replacement Might keep the flow down to medium too.
  9. Ok thanks again, I'm new and don't want to harm any fish that's all.... Obviously worrying over nothing lol.
  10. Just wanted to say thanks for the tips guys. I went to Birdlings Flat (30 Min from Christchurch) and picked up some really good looking natural gravel, I am trying to keep the tank looking as natural as possible so it's perfect! I mentioned getting the gravel from the beach to the LFS as they were trying to sell me some of theirs and they advised against it and said it would put any fish I put in there in danger..... The gravel has been rinsed 1/4 bucket at a time before being added to my tank and I have tested the ph before and after adding it yesterday, my tap water is PH7.8 and the gravel in the tank is 7.8-8.0 (could not tell on api master test) Am I worrying over nothing? Is there any other things I can do / test for to make sure the water will be safe for fish? Thanks again
  11. Hi Guys Me again, I have just set up my new tank and can not get the filter to stop rattling. I understand that it needs to make some noise but it is very loud. It is a Blue Planet SereneLife Atlantis 140L Aquarium HPLED tank with the integrated filter in the hood. Has anyone seen/had any problems with them? I think it might be the impeller as when I adjust the water flow through it the noise gets worse. Also when I was filling the tank I used a spirit level but when I have filled it it is slightly tilting to one side. I thought this might be a factor but as the tilt is so slight I didn't think it should make much of a difference. Any advise guys please? Thanks Marty
  12. Thanks for the advice, I actually have a bag of play sand in the garage come to think of it. I am also planning a trip to a gravel beach at the weekend to grab a bit of that. So a good rinse out of either then I'm good to go? I'll be back on the forums for advise after that as I'm going to try a no fish cycle to to get the tank going! Thanks again all
  13. Thanks Caryl Never even thought of popping to the beach with a few buckets. I was looking to add a couple of bottom dwelling fish, I was looking at a bristlenose and a couple of yoyo loaches so I will make sure whatever I get is not sharp
  14. Hi guys, Just joined yesterday after lurking for a while. I'm in the process of setting up my first tank and as the title suggests was wanting a little bit of advice regarding the substrate to use. I am not sure if I want to go with a sand of gravel type. I am wanting to add a few live plants but not too many and some slate or driftwood to create caves / hiding places for the fish. I'm on a bit of a budget and looking at the price of the lfs gravel was wondering if pea gravel would be ok to use? I have read mixed responses online on the subject. Also would using sand or gravel be better for the live plants and would either restrict what types of fish I could add to the tank. Thanks
