  1. When you cleaned the filter material under the shower, was the water hot or cold? Cold water kills the beneficial (nitrifying) bacteria that keeps your fish from dying of ammonia or nitrite poisoning.

Could've been overfeeding but doesn't sound too bad, I feed mine usually just twice a day, some do it once every two days or less. Water changes every week would be more beneficial to feeding that often.

  2. Hehe no I liked the long reply. Discus sound fascinating. Interesting about the daphnia, must be infected with something. Good you still have a hundred man that's heaps! Sounds like you have good variety of foods, good water change schedule, great stuff especially for your first breed :)

  3. Thanks for the info Fins, I see they say "salmon-pink", which is kinda vague, my "things" are quite orangy, but this would obviously reflect the muddy conditions they come from. I wonder how the first one gets there? It's just a muddy little puddle essentially that is large enough to not dry up in a couple of good days weather. I collected a whole heap more today and I have them in a bucket outside. It would be good if I had a microscope to get a closer look. How did you take that picture Caryl? It looks like it was taken under microscope.

  4. Is the best way to get oxygen to them (with little fuss) to leave them outside in a bucket where the wind will constantly yet mildly diffuse oxygen into the water? These...things I have are quite round, but I guess they could be full on plant detritus as you say Alan, and the ones I have at home are very thin and clear due to lack of food.

  5. Speaking of daphnia, I just went in search of some because I knew where a little pond had gathered, in it sure enough I found little bugs in there, but they are red looking, not clear as daphnia are supposed to be, i put one in my tank one of my lemon tetras munched it down. What could it be?

  6. I just gathered two jars from my stagnant water that hosts my mosquito larvae, it is SO green! It's awesome, got it sitting in some niiice full sun now :) Going to breed my rummies tonight hopefully so now they will have some nice greenwater to get them started on.

  7. That's an excellent idea Caryl, never thought about that. I've got a bucket outside full of mosquito larvae and that's also totally green, which I assume is greenwater, it's really old but I think I'll harvest some into a couple of jars and leave them in the sun. I've read you need the water in an area where it will get most sun.

Pegasus has got some info on infusoria/green water here: http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/grumpygr/ (under all about live foods, infusoria)

This site is also useful: http://www.tropical-fish.net/fish_food.htm#Infusoria about getting it started. They don't seem to differentiate between infusoria and greenwater though, from what I can gather the infusoria is microscopic organisms and the green water is just algae water, but you can't have one without the other???

    Hope this helps

Now where can I find a disused pool :)
