  1. However in all seriousness I think the RSM is a great starter tank and has some really good points.

    Absolutely.

My previous post was purely jest, although i do think we will see it being fullfilled more and more as time goes along. :D

But i've been on this forum for a few years now and seen all the anguish people go through trying to set up a tank, it's great to see a ready to go system for sale at last, that looks good also.

  2. Yes, they work, however they are not as effective as some of the better skimmers.

When I had a Queen, I added a wooden airstone, and that improved performance quite a bit, but was a hassle.

But do use the skimmer, any skimmer is better than no skimmer. but longer term, a better skimmer will be a benefit to your tank.

  3. Hmmm...... I think I know what's coming.

    1. Buy Red Sea Max.

    2. Alter hood so better cooling fan can be fitted.

    3. Tire of fiddling with skimmer, retrofit Deltec skimmer.

    4. Alter stand and install custom sump and plumbing.

    5. Alter hood again so MH lamp can be installed.

    6. Now the system is quite good, enlarge stand so larger tank can be installed to replace the now somewhat small one.

    Job done! :D

  4. Loopy I've made an occasional rock but it is not easy and they are not as good in terms of effect on filtration and water quality.

Another way is to cut rocks to the shape you want with an angle grinder, then glue the pieces together with a quick setting cement such as dricon. Put the dricon through a sieve first to remove the bigger stones.

But mainly, IMO don't worry about the "unappealing" shape of rocks, it is really what you have growing on those rocks that will make the tank. Also, while attractive, flat ledges can also collect dirt which will eventually mess the tank, although there are ways to deal with this, but it does make things more complex.

But also, keep looking. Occasionally an interesting shaped piece will turn up.

  5. To be 100% honest with you, My company use to donate $5000 per year to disasters in NZ but the anti Auckland campainers made me rethink this and now we donate to the Westpark trust and have a good holiday for ourselves

I have some sympathy with this. Origionally from Palmerston North, I left home as a 16 year old & lived in Christchurch for 2 years. It was 2 years of never ending jibes about "North Islander", "pig islander", "jaffa" etc, ad nauseum. The odd joke is OK but 2 years regularly started getting a bit hard to take.

Then I left and went up the far north, past Kaitaia. People would ask where I'm from & i would say "Christchurch", and grit my teeth, waiting for the expected jibes and critisizms. But they never came, there would just be a smile and some friendly comments such as "oh really".

Now I live in Auckland and deal with people from everywhere. People in Auckland really don't care where other people come from.

However last Christmas after around 35 years away, I went back to Christchurch for a few days. It was fun looking around the city again and also interesting that in 35 years, the place is virtually unchanged.

But the long forgotten bad memories were brought back when people discovered we were from Auckland, there were exactly the same old jibes, attitudes have not changed.

Around 1/2 the people in Christchurch are lovely people, ( which includes everybody on this forum! ). But the other 1/2 have a fixation with Auckland and have convinced themselves Aucklanders have a problem with them. Some of these people have never actually been to Auckland, if they came & lived in Auckland for a while they might be surprised, as i was, at the lack of prejudice.

No Aucklanders have a problem with Christchurch, except, maybe, the ones that tried to live there till they got sick of the attitude and went back.

And one for the "did you know" file, Christchurch has 3 times the per capita suicide rate than the NZ average.

  6. They will certainly fit, and you could have other fish also. But wether the tank can supply enough food for the manderins is doubtful. Every tank is different but for most 4 foot tanks 2 manderins is not going to work.

My own tank is a 4 footer and i've never had a manderin because I know the tank would not support it.

But hey, manderins are not the only cool fish. 2 percula clowns in an anemone are VERY cool. If you get two juvenile ones, (which are available in NZ tank bred), one will change sex to become the girl. They will live together in the anemone and behave exactly as in nature, because even in the wild they only have a very small territory and are totally contented in a tank, long as they have an anemone to live in. They will lay eggs regularly which they carefully look after.

Also you could get a yellow tang & a blue tang, long as you start out with small ones. Plus a heap of other types of fish.

And then there's the corals! :D

  7. Well for me anyway I've never used it, or even heard of it  .

If using just make sure it is invert safe, what the 1/2 life in water is, and stuff like that.

Also the tang can get really badly covered with whitespots before it will kill him. Horrible as it is to watch, for the sake of the tank as a whole it is sometimes better to let him cure himself.

However I highly recommend garlic, as it has no detrimental effect on any of your livestock. The bottled products sold in pet shops are not very effective, it has to be a fresh clove of garlic, crushed & chopped to bite size pieces & served immediately. The most powerful anti parasite chemicals in garlic break down within a few hours of the clove being crushed.

I have an article (somewhere) on the anti parasitic properties of garlic, if you want to see it I will try to ferret it out.

  8. Agreed.

My opinion, use your 4 foot tank. But get a skimmer capable of running a bigger tank. Use this set up for at least a year. During this time you will learn much.

Then if you still want to, do a bigger tank. You will not have to buy a new skimmer, and rock etc can be transferred to the new tank.

  9. Yes, in the environment wild fish live in, it's survival of the smartest and in my opinion some of them are pretty intelligent. Especially in a wild marine environment there are a lot of situations fish have to cope with and exploit in the best possible way, or lose to somebody else.

More than instinct alone can equip them for they have to figure things out.

  10. Dantezgirl you can get a quality RODI to produce your filtered water, for much less than per your previous post. I'm still confused about the rules this site has about recommending vendors so if you could pm me an email address I can email you contact details for this.

Other than that though, unless you just won the 1st division lotto, I think you should start smaller than 8 foot, not only will it be expensive, but any mistakes will be expensive. Nearly everybody who starts, designs their tank, runs it for a year or two, sees things that could be better plus learns a lot, then upgrade to a better system in light of the things they have learned.

This despite mostly thinking that their first tank is "it".

  11. All that stuff is in the guide. Start at the beginning the terminology will be explained as you go!

What you need at this stage is to look at an actual marine tank & see how it works, this will be worth 1000 words. (More actually).

Can you contact anyone in your area? Most people pretty keen to show off their tank.
