  1. Hi livingart, yes, top is on properly, there is only one way for it to fit as it has to all line up with the inlet hole.
  2. Morning all I did my first filter clean last weekend and Im guessing I messed up somewhere. Ive noticed a gurgling noise every so often, which I assume, is air in the filter. I can see bubbles coming from the outlet hose everytime this happens. Unfortunately there is also dirt and muck coming out with the air. Ive attached some wool to the outlet hose with a rubber band to catch the crap until I can figure out what step I missed or how Ive gone wrong. Any ideas what I may or may not have done to cause this. Just so you know - I removed the hoses, removed the lid and the media. Washed the media in old tank water, put it back together, primed it and got it running. Everything was great for about 24hrs and now this gurgling has started and the crap coming out with the air. Oh and what do I need as media. I have bioballs at the bottom of the filter then in the basket on top of that there is ceramic noodles and a black sponge and in the top basket there is a sponge and wool. There were also a couple of bags of carb thrown ontop of the bioballs (I was given the tank and set up by a workmate and Im learning as I go). Should they be there or somewhere else. Many thanks in advance.
  3. Thanks everyone. I do have areas of my tank with driftwood, stones and plants that could be classed as "territories" but they arent covered in as a cave would be. I might go get some pvc piping and glue some pebbles over it with silicone to make them look more realistic then bury them a bit just to make sure. How long does it take for the silicone to be safe to put in the tank ie if i do some gluing today will they be okay to go into the tank next weekend?
  4. Hi all - I have a 270ltr tank and was looking at getting a couple of chocolate zebra plecos. I saw them at HFF in albany and thought they were so cute (yeap I know they are poo machines). My question is how many is a good number? I know some plecos like to be by themselves where as others like to be in a group. I have googled this and found two answers, one is that they are fine on their own and the other that they should be in a group. So who do I believe? I currently have: 5 x long fin zebra danios 5 x long fin leopard danios 10 x neons 10 x golden mountain cloud minnows 6 x otos The plecos would be my last addition.
  5. Hi all, was wondering what sort of fish makes a good centerpiece. I would love a male betta or a red tailed shark or even a clown loach but for various reasons these arent always a good way to go (either too agressive or need more than one). Currently I have in my 270ltr tank: 5 x long fin zebra danios 5 x long fin leopard danios 5 x long fin gold danios (still to come) 15 x neons 3 x 3 spot gouramis (told they are a cross with gold gouramis) I dont have any algae eaters (did have a huge pleco but rehomed him) so open to suggestions there, nor do I have any bottom dwellers, so, again, open to suggestions. Also after suggestions as how to set the tank up. I have an aqua aquis 1000 filter so hopefully thats the right filter for the size tank I have (was given the whole set up and am learning as I go). Its got a nice piece of driftwood in there, a submarine and a barrel for hiding places and a few fake plants. Its a bit boring but I also dont want to overcrowd the space with stuff so the fish have an open area to swim around in. Interested in what sort of live plants would compliment the tank and make my fish happier. Cheers :bounce:
  6. HI there everyone. Can I mix fake plants with some real plants or should I just stick to one or the other. Was given a tank with a few fish and Im a real newbie at all this. There were some fake plants and a lovely piece of driftwood with the set up. Have added some danios to the mix so now have 1 x common pleco, 7 x neons, 10 x danios and 3 x 3 spot gouramis. Would like to add a few more neons and a few more danios and maybe some smaller bottom feeders just not sure which way to go as far as planting. All advise welcome. Thanks.
  7. Thanks for that. Im really just trying to figure out if my tank is big enough for him. I was given the tank with the pleco, a few neons and 3 x 3 spot gouramis a few weeks ago. The tank is 150x40x45 and he is about 10 inches (25cms) standard length with another 5 inches or so of tail. Ive since added some more neons so I have 7 in total now plus 5 x long fin zebra danios and 5 x long fin leopard danios. Im almost tempted to get another tank just for him but he may get lonely - I have no idea if they like being by themselves or enjoy some company. Other than that I will rehome him as I dont want him in a tank thats too small for him.
  8. Hi everyone, Im new here and have just been given a tank with a few fish. One is, I believe, a common Pleco. Can anyone please tell me where do I measure him. Is it from head to tail tip or to the base of his tail?
  9. Hi everyone. I moved to Waiheke Island about a month ago and was given a fully set up tank with a few fish. Unfortunately after a newbie error (placed the tank on an uneven surface and it cracked) I now have a repaired tank and the fish that came with it - a huge common pleco over a foot long (anyone interested in taking it off my hands then please send me a message), 3 x 3 spot gouramis and 3 neon tetras (were 4 but one died during my calamity). Have gone through a huge learning curve in a very short time but still have so much to learn. I have purchased 5 more neon tetras, 5 x long fin zebra danios and 5 x long fin leopard danios so hopefully they will arrive safely in the next day or so. Any suggestions of what I can add - something with a bit of colour would be great. As mentioned earlier - will be trying to rehome the pleco as he is huge - oh and tank is 150 x 45 x 40 (270ltrs). Thanks.
