Hey there, I've recently immigrated to NZ and am preparing to set up a discus tank.I'm interested in starting off with a 4 ft tank. All my equipment is currently on its way to NZ.I was given some excess marine reef equipment by my father before leaving. Included in this equipment was the following: RED SEA -Berlin biological filters x2 RED SEA -Protein skimmer My question is this:The bio filters have a capacity to filter up to 1000L each.Would i get any advantage by adding both onto the setup? Would there be any possible use for the protein skimmer in this set up?I understand they only used on marine tanks. How long, once i've setup the tank and started the filtration,would it take to establish the bio filters?Basically what would be the waiting period before adding the discus? Would the bio-filter be ok as my only filtration?I'm not a fan of canister filters. What is a good colour variant ,of discus , to start off with...with the aim of hopefully leading to breeding? Tank mates,for discus? I'm reaching out here to all discus fans ! Help me join the cool kids! Thanks guys/girls

We all know shop built aquaria aren't always built with the highest glass safety factor in mind.Perhaps it's a cost saving factor for both them or the potential customer for that tank.Anyway ,i'm considering buying a tank from a shop and trying to increase that safety factor.Partly due to the height factor of the tank.It's 500 high.I think it is made of 8mm glass. The question is.If i add say 10mm strips of 50mm width to the bottom of the tank ,along the edge.Would that increase the bonding surface of the glass,thefore strengthening the tank against pressure breakages.Or does it have to be done when the tank is built. Any thoughts?

Didn't realise by having caps on that MY BIG LETTERS were making you moderators DEAF.Come on guys you can't be such a bunch of geeks to warrant commenting on caps lock.I was just too lazy to turn them off and on constantly. Secondly i have a well ,how would the local council have any idea what my water quality was if they not supplying me?Don't they add minerals and other chemical additives into THEIR water supply...which mine wouldn't have? If so where would i get a test like that done?

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A COMPREHENSIVE TEST DONE ON MY DRINKING WATER IE. USED FOR FISHKEEPING. I HAVE A WELL SUPPLY. LIVE ON EDGE OF RANGIORA. PREVIOUS OWNER USED IT FOR HIS DYALISIS(SPELLING) MACHINE. JUST WANNA CHECK IF IT WILL HAVE ANY NEGATIVE EFFECT ON MY FUTURE DISCUS ACQUISITIONS.

CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME INFO ON GLASS THICKNESSES FOR CERTAIN HEIGHT TANKS,RELATING TO PRESSURE ON THE GLASS THE TALLER A TANK GETS. I WANT TO BUILD A TANK FOR DISCUS 900(L)X500(W)X1000 HIGH. WOULD I NEED ABOUT 10MM GLASS? ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS

Hey guys, Does anyone know of any discus breeders in Christchurch.I would like to get hold of some young fish to start a breeding program. Any variety would do. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm an avid fishkeeper from South africa.I'm looking to set up a few tanks again once i've moved to NZ.What do young discus cost ,roughly?Are there any good breeders in the Christchurch area? ALTUM ANGELS???? DO YOU GET THEM IN NZ.If not would there be heeps of red tape to import them from outside NZ?
