Hey guys . Just to let you know someone(critter kingdom-stanmore rd) has finally brought some regular golden rams to chch. They arent the balloon rams. They are about an inch long healthy looking, baring one i saw with a deformed spine. I was preparing myself for buying 5 when i heard about them.I then saw them and thought against buying any.Maybe i'm just picky. They 15.95 each.I hope they bring in again, maybe some bigger ones. Thanks to BK for the heads up. Just to let you know.

Has anyone bought any of those altum angels off NEW ZEALAND DISCUS? If so what do they look like? Are they good looking fish.Any losses? Any info would be good?Any photo's of your bought altums

shelley... the hole in the head case you think you have.Has the fish turned quite dark in colour. Is his lateral line also quite dark.If so probably hole in the head. If he has a fungus you need to add methylene blue to the hospital tank.

I also think doing water changes is key to good fish health.I must admit i'm a once a week water changer. However the rams were laying constantly.i even got 9 fry to about 10 millimeters.Went on holiday to oz...father in law managed to over feed them.Polluted their tank. So i didnt ever think that the water could have been that bad.As well as the fact that my discus were doing brilliantly. I looked high and low on the net for causes of dropsy.NO one can pin point a reason for dropsy.I just wanted to beat my head against a wall with the ram deaths. I'm off rams for now.well asian ones at least. Those local ones sound good.Anyone coming to chch soon, that can bring some down for me?

shelley..good luck with your fish.I didnt have any luck with my rams that had hole in the head. Water quality isn't the only issue. With hole in the head it is apparently due to a lack of calcium, phosphorous and vitamin d. Remember old food ie .opened cans of food that are older than two months are useless.Atmospheric humidity decomposses vitamins Well that is according to HANDBOOK OF FISH DISEASES. Of coarse i only found this out after buying the book.

Is it just me who is struggling to keep these bl@#dy asian blue rams alive? I had two breeding females die of dropsy then a male of hole in the head. Before that i had another 3 females also die of hole in the head or dropsy. This is all in a matter of 1 year. My discus are perfectly healthy and growing at a stupid rate. They were in the same tank as the rams.Anyone have any german rams for sale,or even locally bred rams. While i'm having a rant....whats with these retarded ,deformed balloon things we getting? I actually saw some blue balloon rams sold as just regular "blue rams". Why are people buying these deformed fish.if it isnt bad enough that we have weak regular blues coming in...now they bring in deformed ,weak asian fish! PS:anyone seen any regular golden rams lately? Let us know what you think.

Does anybody know who this person.Any contact details?

Sharn, dont even get me started on the above mentioned discus man. Put it this way he certainly wont be getting any further purchases from myself and two others down here again. I'm being VERY diplomatic in my comments here.

I've also had a loss due to dropsy recently.I lost one of my larger blue ram females.Like all of you..i was gutted.Nothing i could do for her. Reading all the posts about guppy problems,it seems you kiwi's have real bad luck.Coming from South Africa,i never had any issues with my guppies.I was breeding sailfin mollies and double sword tail guppies. Since setting up my tank mid last year,i can honestly say ,i have never had so many disease issues as i have had here.Any no, this isn't a poke at NZ. I love NZ...just hate the sub standard fish we seem to be getting in the shops.

Hi guys. I'm having a problem with my discus at the moment.I recently(2 weeks ago)added 4 discus to my tank. The tank already had 3 discus in it. The new ones semm to have added a type of fin rot (i think) to the tank.At first the symptoms only presented themselves on one of the new fish. I thought it was a molly nipping the discus' fins.I removed the molly. The fin damage has continued even though the discus with damaged fin has now been separated totally from any other fish. I also have now one of my original discus with something white looking forming on its tail. There also seems to be fin damage. Could anyone please advise any remedies for these fish. Here are some photo's of the above fish. Thanks http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/R ... INROT3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/R ... Well i wouldnt have believed it myself if i didnt watch them laying. He's my story. Yesterday on the way home i got lost ,coming back from Bunnings...as you do...and HAPPENED to drive by one of my favourite Fish stores. So i popped in JUST to look. Well i ended up leaving with a real gem ,in the form of a female blue ram. I plopped her in my tank.Well, that's when all the chasing started with my Male long finned blue ram. I think at first it was a bit of a territory chase.I was worried for her so i put him in solitary confinement ,inside a net in the same tank. The funny thing is the female kept on visiting the male and flarring her gills at him,and visa versa. I then let him out 4 hours later.NO CHASING.GREAT! Well they literally went straight behind some grass in the tank and started cleaning a pit! No less than 2 hours later i'm watching eggs being laid !!! SO STOKED! I woke up this morning to find the male defending the eggs against all odds. The female has been booted out of the pit and is chased away when she ventures to close. She's a lot smaller than him.I think it was her first spawn.Eggs in a patch about the size of a thumb nail. So now that i have eggs, does anyone with previous knowledge of breeding these guys ,have any knowledge to pass on. Should i get a really fine net and move the eggs into there, with an airstone-keeping the net in the same tank? Or leave them with the male and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies guys. TANKSMAN- i figured that, that equation was wrong.Worked it out though quickly.Good for others though. Hey Brian,if you reading this...WHAT'S YOUR BILL..HEY HEY????
-
Does anyone know how to work out what total electricity consumption you are using a month on your tanks .Also how that equation can help you work out cost of your tank a month in electricity bills. Thanks

Ever since i set up my 3 foot tank,i've been eyeing up a 5 foot tank at a LFS. It's 1500x700(h) x 500. In my 3 foot i have got into the whole planted tank scene.Never was much of a plant keeper.Anyway,i'd be keen on having plants in my big tank. However i dont really want heaps of fluoro's ,if i can help it.It would be predominantly a discus setup. So i'm interested in metal halides in the 6500k range. What do they sell for? Seperate prices for ballasts, bulbs, fittings etc, would be good. How many would i need? Does anyone have any idea how to work out your power consumption for lights.Would like to find out what i'm paying for my light setup at the moment. Thanks Rory

Hey guys, I recently went into a local pet store....JUST TO LOOK! Cutting a long story short i left with a blue ram.I'm pretty sure it's a male.Really colourful. Anyway,i'm keeping him with my discus. He's just a wee lad of about 20mm to base of tail.Do they get really territorial in a tank.I'm hoping to breed them once i get hold of a female. Is there a market for them?If so what do you think i'd get for them?
