  1. As Ryan says light wont directly harm the eggs but fungi seems to grow better with light so I usually cover the tanks anyway. You wont have hurt the eggs by having a look.

Have 50+ agassizi fry growing out now and had 150+ cockatoos from 3 spawns growing but they get to 20mm, just starting to colour up, bloat up and die. Lost over 3/4 of them in the last 6 weeks. It would be really nice to get some new bloodlines.

  2. I am really sorry to hear this mate. I always admired your big tank and know how hard you worked to not only stock it but also to maintain it. It had years invested in it.

We all hope that it will cause you to be more determined rather than thinking of giving in because losing someone as knowledgeable as you in a country this small would leave a big hole and would take a long time to recover from.

I know how many people you have helped get into this hobby and how many people you continue to help, myself included, so hopefully the good deeds will come back to you with interest.

  3. I dont have any females at all sorry. My last female adult died a few months ago and she was promised to a friend in the Wairarapa.

I do have 15 young ones growing out and with any luck some of those juviniles will be females but so far they look like all males as well.

Looks like I am joining the queue like every one else sorry.

  4. Thanks they look great. The bigger male is going to be really nice.

The smaller one looks to have a more oval caudal fin and slightly thicker and darker leading edges on the pelvic fins which is positive.

In the 3rd picture, is the smaller one showing off or did you just happen to snap the shot as it was on a lean? If it is showing off its belly to him then it is most likely a girl.

Looks like the race is on to breed them.

  5. Aqua One tubes only come in daylight and 15,000K tubes. You could ask the shop to order you in some Hagen PowerGlos. These are 18,000K. Plants seem to really like a higher kelvin rating :)

Plants do best under a mid range 5000 - 8000k. IMO 18,000k is way to high for fresh water plants. You can find plenty of full spectrum tubes for plants in the 6700 - 10,000k range that work well or you can grow great plants under a standard $5.00 daylight tube.

  6. If you are planning on buying a cutter then get the one exactly as shown at the top of this thread. The green handle is made of wood.

Don't even think about getting one of those awful metal handled ones with the round ball at the end of the handle. I learnt this lesson the hard way but an extra couple of dollars on the price of the cutter to get a good one will make a massive difference.

  7. As all above with regards to glass. 10mm normal is going to make a great tank.

I was pleasantly surprised to see some of these fish today in Lower Hutt. They are lovely looking fish.

Sadly no females which is probably good because I would have definitely bought them if I could have made a pair. 2 or 3 of the larger males in particular were extremely nice fish.

Fingers crossed that someone can find a female and get a pair.

IMO they are macmasteri (wide irregular lateral band, squared off tail and tall elongated caudal spot)
