  1. I feed them cucumber and driftwood.

Try feeding them some novo plec tabs as it doesn't sound like they are getting enough food to me. My plecos love these and I supplement them with other bottom feeding tabs and sometimes some veges.

Just checked my PH, Amonia and Nitrite last night.

PH: 6.4 (albino bristle tank) and 6.8 (the one with chinese algae eater)

    Amonia = Neutral

    Nitrite = Neutral

Nitrade = Ran out of test liquid

Added some tonic salt last night to help kill bacteria grow in the tank.

My black Bristlenose always dropped dead but my golden one are thriving and growing :)

  2. I think that like most schooling fish the more the merrier. Ive got 3 in my 180L, which is the minimum you should get with any schooling fish (& remember they will eventually get big) & mine seem happy! They are lovely fish to watch!

  3. I have clown loaches in my planted tank and don't see them eating plants.

A plant I got a while ago had ramshorn snails on it but the loaches saw to them and I haven't seen any new snails.

You could always trade the loaches when they get too big

I agree with Karina. I've got 4 types of loaches including clowns and have always had a planted tank. I've found clowns and chain loaches great for eating snails and loaches are popular so easy to sell on if needed. Anything's better than copper if you have any sensitive fish. If they are multiplying fast it may also mean there's too much food for them.

    Good luck!

  4. Hi,

I run an aquis 1000 alongside my AR850.

It was easy to set up the aquis with the spray bar going down the hole in the back LHS where the cords etc go in and drilling a pipe sized hole near the outlet hole on the RHS and a small piece out the back so that the inlet pipe sits flush. Let me know if you need more details/pics if you decide to go this way.

My opinion was the more filtration the better & it means you have an intake pipe going from the back left and right of the tank.

    HTH!

  5. Hollywood sell praziquantel in liquid form for around $25 I think. Not sure if they sell levamisol though - I bought some from Bird Barn about a year ago although it wasn't in the fish section. Both places promptly post/courier. HTH

  6. My peppered corys do this quite a bit during the day and my other corys - sterbais, smudge, bronze & albino corys do it at night when the lights are out and they think you aren't looking. :D

    I hope this helps!

  7. I too bought a pair 2 weeks ago. We're ok at first but did notice that they breathe a lot faster than all the other fish. Anyone else seen this?

Anyway on monday I couldn't find the male and last I'd seen him he was slightly bloated I thought. Still no sign of him till about an hour ago when I went to clean the tank glass and got that dead fish smell - then I found him. I think he only died today.

I too paid more for mine - $31.40 each

Question is do I get another male for her? :-?

I didn't notice my latest female looking sick at all but the original female that I got was breathing rapidly before she died...

  8. I had a pair back in '06 and they seemed quite hardy, spawned and raised their fry. I have just bought another pair yesterday so it will be interesting to see if they last. Hopefully they do cos they're $30ea down here.

GL with your pair, hopefully they are strong, healthy, successfully spawn for you & you can sell some babies back to people like me! :happy2:

  9. So, my next step would be, go back to the LFS, and ask them to ask their importer "If your fish only last for such a short time, why are you charging so much for them?"

:dunno: Seems odd that weak fish can sell for so much.

I guess the price is related to supply and demand and the fact that they last for a couple of weeks makes it hard to prove that it isn't the buyer's fault unfortunately.

I WILL however tell them that I lost another & won't be buying any more. :roey:

A pity as they are pretty although a bit more timid than my Bolivians who are little characters!

  10. Hmm, I wondered if that may be the case.

As pretty as they are, they are too costly if they keep dropping like flies.

I think I'll wait and see how this guy goes and maybe replace him with the more hardy bolivians or some other dwarf something that catches my interest.

    Thanks for your replies

  11. Hi,

Just after some advice from those that have/are keeping these lovely little fish...

I purchased 2, a male and female from my local LFS over a month ago. They didn't want to catch them in their planted tank so ordered a pair in for me. A few days after getting them the female who was the more brightly coloured of the two went quiet and a day later died. My water paramaters were fine although my nitrates were at 10. I heard they are succeptable to nitrates so bought a nitra zorb and put it in the filter, waited 2 weeks and then bought another female to go with the male. Two weeks later and the female is dead again. As you know these fish aren't cheap at $17-$20 at Hollywoods and my local and I am wondering if it is worth getting any more as I've no idea why they died... Could the male have taken a dislike to the girls although there were no marks that I could see?

I've had a couple of Bolivians in my other tank which are a delight to watch and been doing well for over a year. The tank the blue rams are in is an AR850 community tank with no bullies that I can see and has both the 850 filter + an external aquis 1000 so plenty of filtration. pH is around 6.8-7.

Just wondering if others have had any issues with these fish? :dunno:

  12. How long as the sand been in there and is it a thick layer? I had quite a few problems with my tank last year with my live bearers dying for no apparent reason. After some advice from helpful member on here I gutted the tank and chucked the sand (which admittedly smelt but this could have been the cooked snails LOL).

Out of personal taste and now a distrust of sand (and the bacteria that can live in it) I've gone back to pebbles that are large enough for me to give a good poke at and dig around with the syphon. My 10 sterbais were ok through this mind but unlike yours were really timid and rarely seen whereas now they are often out and about.

This probably isn't what's wrong with your tank but worth a mention if temp, ph ammonia etc are fine.

Good luck with them settling down as they are :nfs: .

  13. I'm sorry to hear they still don't appear quite right. I have gravel with mine and they are also fine forraging around on that as well as higher up on plants when they think you aren't looking. Why do you think your sand is a problem - is it sharp?

Are all your other fish ok? :dunno:

  14. Most of my cories (particularly the sterbai & smudge ones) freeze if they think they are being watched. I almost have to pretend I'm looking at another fish before they unfreeze & go back to what they were doing LOL.

I hope yours turn out to be fine. I've heard colder water temps (simulating the onset of the wet season) encourage them to spawn...

  15. Hi,

I've got a male blue ram (looking out for a girl), various cories & a pair of dwarf rainbow fish along with a few others. My dwarf neon guarami had to be moved from the tank as it didn't like the male dwarf rainbow but the others get along fine.

    HTH
