  1. Thanks for all the feedback. I was getting small (certainly less than 3 cm) ones from Hollywood here in Albany. The tank has been set up about 2 months now. After the last BN died I though check the filter, man was it full of gunk. Have rinsed it in tank water and put it put back on (its a Fluval 303). Go for broke, just put a large red spot in and it seem's to be fine so far.
  2. Got some Borneo suckers in my son's tank and they are doing a great job, also starting to get quite big. I read they get to 6cm (which they are about now), is that correct worried they might out grow the tank. Now my tank is tropical (26-28 C), 100 litres. Keep putting Bristlenose in and they die after a few days to a few weeks. Every one else in the tank are fine. What else could I try to keep the algae down ? Plenty of algae to eat and have some drift wood in there.
  3. I have got Tiger Barbs * 5, Tetra's * 3, some Chinese thingys (can't remember the name) *2 and Cat Fish *2. They are all doing fine. The Tiger Barbs have really grown. Keep putting bristle nose in and they last 2-3 days that die. One has lasted several weeks but called it quits yesterday. Plenty of algae to eat ! also some drift wood. What am I doing wrong. The tank is about 100 litres.
  4. For the record. Water crystal clear now. Thanks

    Fluval 303

Thanks for the offer but it came with the manual which is good. What do people put in the three chambers ,it currently has 1. Sponge, 2. Noodles, 3. Charcoal. Stick with them ?

    Fluval 303

Just found and picked up my second tank off trademe. It has come with a fluval 303. Question :-? : Should I keep the fluval, ie is it good, ok or a lemon. PS: very pleased with the buy of trademe.
  7. Any one seen these in NZ, where would I find them ?
  8. Thanks for the reply's and tips. Tanks is getting clearer, working on having tank no 2 for myself ! Well I used to have a coronation st terrace house in Manchaester then I sold it and came to NZ to find we could buy 10Acres and a house. Plus I grew up on my relatives farms in the UK so had to have some space.
  9. Filter has been running for several days non-stop. It's a lot clearer, not crystal but getting there. Got some Corydorus Aeneus man have they cleaned up the bottom of the tank. They also stir the debri up a bit to be pulled through the filter.
  10. Have left it running overnight. Tank looked a lot clearer this morning. Will leave it on from now on. We get regular power outages during winter, this could become a pain :-?
  11. The filters for the house water are the paper type, no carbon. I can try some straight out of the tank. We collect rain water into the tank. On my intro post some one said leave the filter on all the time. We currently switch it off overnight. My son has been a bit over keen with the feeding to start with, but is far better now.
  12. G'day, Just signed up. I live in Paremoremo on 10 acres, so already have cows, chickens .... When I was young we had an aquarium in my bedroon at home (UK), many happy hrs spent watching the fish. Seemed a big tank, but then most things are when aged 5-7. Trying to remember what we had, guppies, angel fish, molly's. Any way fond memories of me and my father looking after the fish. Grown up with a son who has hit 5. Yes we have seen "Finding Nemo" but not about to go out and raid the reefs for clown fish. So we got a 10 gallon tank and have stocked it with: Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes ) Gold Barb (Barbus sachsi) Spiney Head Hillstream Loach (Gastromyzon ctenocephalus ) Seem's to be ok so far other than the water is "milky". I involve my son with feeding, cleaning (using the siphon vacum) and switching things on & off (pump, filter). So good for bonding and teaching him about taking responsability for some thing. Quiet time works great as he sits on his bed and watches the fish. I now have a hankering to get a bigger tank for my study !
  13. Have had the 10 gallon tank nearly 2 months now. Stocked it slowly over 3 weeks. Plants are growing like crazy, have had to trim twice now. Change 10 litres of water every 3-4 days. New water I add "Cycle". We are on tank water (not mains), but still add conditioner. Our house water goes through a 10 micron and 0.1 micron filter. It has 5 mountain minnows, 3 golden bards. All seem happy active and healthy. The water remains "milky". When I refreshed the water last night with in minutes the water turned very milky but has cleared a little this morning. It has a wet/dry filter. How to get nice clear water ? What am I doing wrong ?
