Thanks for the advise guys. I spoke with the LFS and there is nothing they can do which is fair enough, just a little pissed about it! I acclimatise them with the 'floating bag' method just to match the temperature but there must have been some issue once they hit my water in terms of stress etc. Either way, nothing I can do now!

Hey guys, Im looking for some advice on what is the 'done' or expected thing. I bought 2 pictus cats recently from a big fish store, got the fish home, put them in the tank and within two days they were dead. I did all my water tests and everything is fine and all of my other fish are fine. Now this was 100bucks worth of fish. They died yesterday and I have since flushed the poor guys, no sign of damage or illness. Any ideas where I stand or what I should do??

Right guys thanks for all the help! Ill do the house tonight and move out for the evening! Ill get the dog treated properly tomorrow and I will stick a flea collar in the vacuum! Sorted! Ill let you know how i get on

Ok guys, thanks for all of the replies. The dog is treated by the vet twice yearly but remember, i only moved over from ireland where this was sufficient (the weather doesnt really allow for an infestation). Since moving here we have treated him once with advance. He is clear, but i just thought maybe he brought them in? I dont know..... Anyway, what I was going to do was lift the lid off, turn off all filters and cover it in glad wrap (put the lid over the glad wrap for extra protection) and not re open it until late in the evening (leaving a solid 6/7 hours)..... I think it's a risk i have to take unfortunately which is a pain in the ass!

Hey guys, I have a small flea problem in the downstairs of my house (the bloody dog must have brought them in). Now, i have never had fleas before in the house and I actually havent seen these guys but I keep getting bitten so I think that must be it! Anyway, I was going to set a couple of flea bombs off tomorrow and leave the house for the day, however, what do I do about the fish tank??? I cant move a 180litre tank!!

Well now i am addicted and delighted with this board! All my questions answered! Thanks for the response, i was wary of changing the PH dramatically so i will just keep an eye on it and make sure it isnt climbing and leave it at that. I must also let you know, i added about 10 litres of water from an already cycled tank so my cycle should be a little shorted. Keen to get more fish in there (particularly some rams) soon so if anybody has them, lemme know!

ALSO, i checked PH this morning, looked to be about 7.4 This seems to me a little high? Should i get some drift wood or someting (will that lower it?) I do have a PH balance forumula but it reccomends to add 2 drops for every 3.8 litres which to me seems like a lot!

Ill give it a go. The barbs seem ok getting them as they fall. I may just get some sinking larger pellets for the gbas and a brittlenose if i add one. I will then perhaps get some frozen foods for the top feeders. Ill play it by ear for now!

Cool! My plan is perhaps to add some rams (rainbow and gold rams). A nice fancy plec, some neons and then take it from there. I would really like to get a redtail black shark and some silver sharks but cant find any anywhere!

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I remember keeping 3 spot gouramis a few years ago, i might be wrong but I always noticed they seemed to be a bit of a hardy fish. Any health problems any issues with temps/ph etc they looked as bright and healthy throughout as always. Maybe they were just good fish! I set it up on Saturday, monitored the temps and PH that night and all was ok. I conditioned the water and allowed it to filter all night and day and monitored again. Everything seemed perfect! SOOO, I went to HFF yesterday afternoon, picked up 5 cherry barbs, 5 tiger barbs and a pair of juvenile GBAs. I will leave it for a week (there is a lot of plant and hiding places) and let the tank cycle then perhaps add some gouramis and take it from there! Ill get some picks up later if I can (im not around until late tonight so i will do my best!) Im looking for advice regarding feeding. I have always just fed my fish brine shrimp and flakes. I bought the (expensive!) new life spectrum community food. One thing with it is: it is brown, small, sinking pellets. My substrate is fine burgundy so I cant see the food when it sinks... ALSO, will it just float past the top eaters if I add them? What do you guys think? Should I also supplement the GBA's diet with something specifically for them?

Hey guys, As you know i am currently running a small coldwater tank as i waited on a nice bargain on a trop to come up....today, i bit the bullet and bought a rio 180 (bow front) to start! Set it up this avo, have fine gravel, about 10 plants, a couple of rocks and after a ph test tonight ill prob grab some drift wood tomorrow. Its going to be heating over night and I just added an air pump and air stone to keep the water nicely agitated. It seems to be settling nicely! NOW, the fun begins. I want to start a fish cycle after i test everything tomorrow but really not sure where to go in terms of stocking after that and which fish to use for the cycle. All my previous community tanks have been keptquite simple (corys, rams, danios, silver sharks, pleco). This time the missus wants some kissing gouramis, perhaps some coloured shoaling fish and a nice few catfish. Any recommendations? What shouldnt i put with the gouramis or are they a poor fish anyway? ALSO, i have never had a fighter, ever, whats the rules? cheers guys!

For a 30 litre tank it should be enough! Its an eheim filter with carbon media

I kept reptiles for years too so often had a few tanks knocking about, understand how you always want bigger! Ill keep an ey on TM

Was keen to have a bit of a 'display' style tank. Perhaps a few small to medium fish - brittlenose, corys, neon tetras, clown loaches, perhaps some small angels? Not keen on LARGE fish or breeding. Heavily planted from the bottom in an area with a lot of light

Thanks for the advice lads, I went to HFF last night, got an airbox and a small filter to add to the tank and continue the filter. Oh this is a long term plan, i just bought 2 small tanks for colswater (and fit them into a cabinet in the lounge )

Hey guys, In order to keep my fish frenzy going until I get my large tropical tank, I am looking for some advice. I have a 30 litre tank at the moment (unheated). I was gonna head to hollywood today for a budget airpump and stone to oxegenate it. I have a couple of small plants and cultured gravel too. ANYWAY, we have 2 goldfish (small) that we were going to keep until they get a few inches then put them to a pond im building at the back. Until i move the, what do you reckon I could put in the tank? What coldwater fish can i mix with the 2 goldies (shubukin and common goldy). Ive read so much about white cloud mountain minnows and danios mizing in cold water with common goldfsh but what do people think? If i take the goldies out, what should I use the tank for?

Hey all, I am a new member here despite being a long time lurker. Myself and the other half moved here from Ireland in November last and having kept reptiles back in Ireland (and fish growing up) we have just moved into an apt which will accomodate our love for fish! Looking for a 3ftISH tank (black stand and hood) in good condition if anybody has one. Also after a tall perhaps 6 sided display tank! Anyway, look forward to getting to know you all! :lol:
