  1. She is probably about 2 - she would be our oldest platy I believe - I will separate her as soon as I can
  2. Hi guys, just wondering if you could shed some light/advise how to treat to help this poor fish. I tried to take pics but I'm rubbish with a camera and she moves too quickly. I have an adult female platy - has been very healthy up till a few days ago - breeding and eating well. Now she has suddenly gone super thin - like she's collapsing inwards!!. She has her top fin clamped down and her head is always above the rest of her body. She still eats when offered food and still comes up to the glass to say Hi. Water parameters are good - everything is running well. We introduced a few new plants recently and added a stronger bulb to our light. She shares a community tank with other platies, 1 bristlenose and 2 otos - everyone else seems well. Is she helpable? or should I say goodbye now? I'm willing to try anything!
  3. thank you so much for all your replies so far!. Siamese algae eaters sound excellent so will definitely look into them some more. Of course we are going to cycle the tank and make sure its stable before putting any fish in . We've only just got plants in there yesterday and are looking to do a lot more aquascaping before fish anyway.
  4. We recently restarted with our 170L tank as we wanted to lift it to build a cabinet under it anyway. Cabinet is built and looks great so now we are considering what to restock with Our thoughts: Dwarf gourami (6) and Platties (because we love them! haha). Other then that we're a bit stuck, I want some sort of algae eater for in there are well but don't know who are compatible etc. We love Demasoni but from what I've read they're a bad idea with smaller fish? The tank has red grit substrate with Daltons aquatic mix under, and we plan for it to be heavily planted. Tank is well lit but I don't know all the specs on the bulbs and stuff - it currently has a plant growing light and we were waiting on getting another bulb once we got fish - the light hasn't been going much anyway as the tank has been out of commision for a few months. Filtration is a Fluval 305. What fish would be a peaceful and interesting community mix? We dislike guppies, goldfish, tetras and barbs. Ta much!
  5. That really is quite haunting, I really like it
  6. Found it sitting on the bottom of the tank with a suspicious bend in its back and not moving its tail/dorsal fin. Euthanase?
  7. Well I put a glass themometer in there which showed how wildly innacurate the stick on one is! wow. The tank is at 22 degrees and the heater (set to 22 degrees), is coping beautifully at keeping it there. All fish are A-Ok. Crisis averted Thanks Guys!
  8. Hiya!, I'm new to this forum but I've been reading it for a while I have a 170L tank with an internal filter, and a 200w heater. Its currently got about 15ish platies in it, which came from my pond outdoors. So, they're pretty used to the cold. I'm running a heater in the tank as its making the house too cold without it! my question is: my heater seems to be cooking my fish. I set it last night to 22 degrees, and when I got up this morning the tank thermometer showed the tank was at 26 degrees, but the heater still hadn't turned itself off. I assumed the themostat was naffed and turned the heater off (it was secondhand). Today I went a got a new heater (200w Visi-Therm), and set it to 26 degrees when I put it in the tank as I didn't want to drop the temperature to fast and shock the fish. 2 hours later and the tank is at 28 degrees, heater still churning away. Turned the heater down to 22 degrees and the thermostat turned it off. Whats going on? Is the internal filter kicking out enough heat that I don't need the heater running at all?
