  1. Hey all , just wondering what media is best in a fluval cannister filter for a cichlid tank, the tank is 300L - just wondering what media and where to place each in the 405?
  2. LOL Ira, Ive been doing that! It looks like its going a little icky
  3. Not really as its taken the top off exposing the poly. I really just want to cover itup to stop the water getting in there... Pix at the link.. http://www4.snapfish.co.nz/slideshow/AlbumID=1637999019/PictureID=56393413019/a=2703203019_2703203019/otsc=SHR/otsi=SPIClink/
  4. Hey guys, i have found a hole in my background about half the way down in a 300L tank. It was all resined etc before putting back in the tank, but I think I may have hit it when vacuuming one day. Its about the size of a 5cent piece, is there anyway i can fix this without emptying the whole tank? I thought something like aqua knead it or similiar?
  5. Great thanks (even the inaccurate, unhelpful posts! ) I will keep trying to catch the female, she is causing problems but will just perservere.
  6. So I thought that convicts were mbuna, apparently not...is it ok to have them with a tank of mbuna or should i try to catch them and move them?
  7. I thought the same....damn 2.00 fish! Re clown loach - he was a 'spare' from my old discus tank, so i guess I should....
  8. convicts are huge compared to the demasoni. I decided to try and remove the female, but catching them is proving difficult.
  9. Apparently no -it isnt common knowledge. The LFS sold me 4. the other 2 are both male. As I said it has all been peaceful until now. The female had babies who a different male a few weeks ago. Looks like those have all been eaten and now another male - bigger - is chasing everything.
  10. I have a 300 L tank with 4 convicts, 3yae, 1 clown loach and 4 demasoni (was 6 2 died in the last 24 hours) - building up slowly, 2 of the convicts paired off and now one of the males is chasing everything in the tank. I wonder if they have eggs somewhere in the tank, regardless, I also wonder if the demasoni are dying becasue they are so stressed from the male convict chasing them... anywho my question is, should i remove the male or the female convict. I have a 40 litre tank that they could go in or the female. My thinking is - take the male out, that will only temporarily solve the problem as the female with pair up with another male - remove the female - hopefully stops the aggression. As previous to the two convicts 'hooking up' there was no aggression and they tank was a happy home... Any thoughts?
  11. Great thanks - I've actually given up trying to catch them. I figured the parents will look after them well enough
  12. Thanks for the advice. I have given up trying to catch them, they are really faaast. The only thingI noticed is that the parents are really chasing the other fish, I will watch and see if the other fish and make sure they are not too stressed.
  13. I have a 300L tank with 4 convicts, 3 GAE's, 6 Demonsoni and one yellow and black fish I cant remember the name of. Two convicts have paired up and now theres little babies .. As I have never had babies before, a few questions? 1. Do I need to move them out of this tank? If so how, they are teeny tiny.. 2. Will my other fish eat them? 3. What do I feed them?
  14. Great - thanks and sorry I didnt even think to do a search.

  17. I have reteseted just after water change and the results are as follows: NH3- 0.1 NO3 - 10 NO2 - 8 PH - 8 KH - 13 GH - 4
  18. Ok I am so confused.... I have had my 300L tank operating for about 4 weeks now and have 4 convicts in it, assorted coral and a diy background. I am running a Fluval 404 cannister filter with some oyster shells in there to help raise the gh. Sustrate is aragonite. I added some Startsmart into the filter and some borrowed filter media... I have been testing my water daily for the past three weeks and the last few days have had an increase in Nitrates and Nitrites. and KH. The fish have been eating spiralina discs, colourbits, and some fresh zuchinni. Yesterday I found some zuchinni hidden under the coral so have removed it... NO3- 110 NO2 - 1.6 KH - 130 Ammonia - 0.1 Does this normal? if not what should I do ? yesterday I did a 25% water change and the same today...
  19. When starting to cycle new setup - if i am 'stealing' some media from an already established tank, what exactly do I use ? Do i just use the noodles or the filter wool as well? And when doing so do I put the stolen material into my fluval filter at the bottom ( if using the stolen filter wool)? wont this cause all the bits to go into my nice clean water? Want to make sure I am doing it right...
  20. Thanks everyone, hubby enjoyed making it, I enjoyed harassing him to hurry up! As for the turning the lights off - great idea - now if I can just work out how to turn off the sun?? Also I have dumped a heap of aragonite in there, I spent most yesterday stirring and emptying, stirring and emptying, finally filled it up and got the water clear...but when I woke up today it was cloudy again - not as cloudy but still not clear! Any idea why this is happening? and should I still just keep emptying and stirring or try and let it all settle? also is it ok to put my fish in there while its a little cloudy - common sense tells me no...but...
  21. also, is it ok to put fish in while a little cloudy? or leave til it settles down?
