  1. Re the filtration - the CF1200 won't put through nearly enough for a tank that size.  Minimum flow is 4 x the volume which would be 1600 litres per hour.  You would require at least two CF to get near enough filtration.  Perhaps the CF you already have and something else with quite a bit more volume.  It doesn't have to break your budget though  :)  I have just sold my sun sun 1400lph which was absolutely brilliant and was only $85 brand new a couple of years ago.  Pay more, perhaps less breakages - that I really cant comment on as no experience.

I was planning to have two canister filters so just deciding on which brand the second one should be :)

    Thanks for the advice.

  2. The aggression of the dat as with a lot of large fish depends on the individual, you could get one that is mellow as, or one that is super aggressive, there is no way of telling.
If you remove the dat  from the list going to a more peaceful community it will probably make your life easier.

They provide better filtration, better water movement, and use less power.

True, well ill take the Dat off for now but ill keep it as an option

guess ill be saving a bit for an eheim then.

How large of a tank do Jardiniis require i'm curious?

  3. The main problem I see with your stock list is that the banjo cat will eventually get eaten, probably by the poly, or the dat.

Also depending on the temperament of the dat it could bully your butterfly fish, and elephant nose to death.

As far as filtration goes, I used to use aqua one canister filters, but since buying a fluval/Eheim filter I have never looked back, and would always personally save for a bit longer so that I could get a better filter.

The Banjo cat is a bit of an after thought so ill just drop that. As for the Dat i'm not too sure about getting one as i have heard they are only wild caught and i don't want to buy any that are. Butterfly is the closest ill  get to an arrowana and elephant nose fish look so unique so i think ill just drop the Dat. Are there less aggressive Dats we can get in New Zealand? Or is the a similar large fish that isn't as aggressive? How are the Eheims better? I already have one cf1200 but i don't mind paying a little extra for an eheim if it will make a large difference.

    Thanks for the reply :)

  4. Have got a list of the fish i have considered and put through a fish compatibility website in regards to tank size and tank mates. I'm not sure how reliable it is. Will be running to aqua one cf1200 as filtration.

    Fish:

1 x Delhezi Bichir (Polypterus delhezi)
1 x African Butterfly Fish (Pantodon buchholzi)
1 x Siamese Tigerfish (Datnioides polota)
1 x Elephantnose Fish (Gnathonemus petersii)
1 x Banjo Catfish (Bunocephalus coracoideus)
1 x Banded Leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus)
1 x Silver Prochilodus (Semaprochilodus taeniurus)

  5. Hi All

I am now able to set up a 400 litre tank that is 135 x 60 x 50 and was wondering what to stock it with. The only fish that i am set on getting is a delhezi bichir and a butterfly fish. Other fish i have an interest in are leopard ctenopoma, banjo catfish, datnioide, striped leporinus and flag tails. Let me know if these are incompatible or need a larger tank. Are there any other fish that would be more suited to a tank this size with a delhezi bichir? I don't want any fish that are not captive bred.

    Thanks :D

  6. What a load! A cat that has never been out of the house is going to take off into the wilderness my rear!. Its like making the statement a hunting dog and a lap dog are the same!. I do not hate humans but i hate them being here!. Native birds and skinks, i just watched as a whole new development in Waitakere got put up where it was native bush so dense you couldn't see the other side, i use to walk my kids through to show them the lizard's when you sat still, its now nothing more than bark chip, cement and dirt, it was full of skinks, wren etc humans killed thousands in one day! in this tiny area, all for profit!, yet cats are the major problem! lol.

I whole heartedly agree with you there. People are a bigger problem than cats.

  7. I have been noticing something strange with my blue tongue. He becomes active as soon as his UV light turns off, his heat lamp still is on when it turns off so the temperature does not change. I was wondering is he sensitive to light and does not like it? I know its not temperature related and his UV light is 30cm away from him so that brings me to my question, should my blue tongue have a less bright light etc?

  8. Cheers guys, especially Varanophile for laying out that info, very helpful, it covers a few things that were a bit murky for me. There's soooo much info out there on google - as a newbie it's hard to know what is right or wrong, and just where to begin. I think I'll also pick up the bearded dragon manual at some stage, just so I've got something that's not on line based to flick through.

Re. worms, what is the reason they are not so good to feed? Is it that they might tangle and cause impaction? (Just a guess)

Also, vet checks - how often do people find their beardie might need a vet trip? Do they need to go in for worming etc

You got part of the worm bit right! They also are really fatty so only treats.
