  1. But its in my community tank, the other fish will have a go at the eggs, wouldn't they? Anyway they havn't hatched yet so shouldn't they be less sensitive to water conditions changes if I shift them?
  2. My bristlenoses have too! must be that time of year . Although I'm not sure whether I should move to eggs and Dad from the tank their in to another tank. Do yous think this is a good idea? I'm thinking Dad might abandon the eggs if I do.
  3. This is a couple of things I do that isn't mentioned on the websites. You would do these things when starting a new culture. 1. microwave the soil: this wil kill any insects or mites in the soil. and when you punch holes in the lid of your container 2. cut out piece of tissue paper (one piece big enough to cover all the holes),place it on top of the holes and cellotape the edges of the paper. 8) this should stop the mites from invading your culture, nice and simple. unlike some of the crazy ideas i've read on the internet, such as making a moat of water around cultures  jordan
  4. great I got a basic idea what size to get now thank you for the tip jordan
  5. hey everybody I need to know what yous think would be a good size raising tank for 1 spawn of dwarf cichlids(Apistogamma nijsseni)?. also im just wondering why alot of people use small tanks to spawn there fish? can I just use a large tank? jordan
  6. yeah the water at my place is alkaline, ph of 8
  7. I also have a pair of A.trifasciata Is that as in a soil or are you talking about peat moss? and can I have the fish in the aquarium while i'm doing this? jordan
  8. I'm thinking at having a go at my spawning nijseeni. I've heard that you need a Ph of 6.5. My question is is really necessary to adjust the ph to spawn them? because i've never done this before. jordan

    Brine shrimp

Im not very successful with my bbs either. Micro worms are another option, here in Chch I have to order them in since the LFS don't keep them readily.
  10. I was worried more of the water temperatures rather than the ice. The worst that would probaly happen here is that the pond would freeze over, but most of the time you only get small sheets of ice. I'm gonna be keeping orandas, maybe lionheads in there. My plans were to make it about a metre deep and its gonna get the morning/afternoon sun, does that sound alright to you guys? Isn't it true the deeper you go the warmer it is for the fish during winter? And about the stoping ice from forming i've read that you can leave a bucket with a stone or something heavy, and it will just float around stoping it from freezing over. thanks for the replies everyone Jordan

    Rotting Vall

hey BK those blue rams your looking for are they the green ones with the blue dots all overhalf the body, with a few black oval like strips (http://www.aquaworldaquarium.com/The_Su ... e_Ram.html) . I remember at one stage they were quite common in chch stores, not very colourful ones but they where butterflys. Anyways a little while ago I brought some off a local breeder, may I add they were alot better than the ones in the store. I'll e-mail you his number (if I still got it) if you want. You'll have to ask him if he still breeds them becasue it was a little while back. oh and your valls, your problem is that you probaby dont have enough light I found that was my problem after trying to grow plants after 5 years or so(added more tubes). I now have a 400mm deep 10 gallon with four 24" tubes running through it with one 18w philips 84,and three 20w bio-life fluorescent tubes (alot of red 6500K suposably, this was on a spetrograph on the pactaging) which I brought back from Hong Kong.Things seem to be going good as i've only had a plant setup going for 3 weeks. I read on a an article about NASA growing plants in space, it said that their plants were growing under mostly the red end of the spectrum(6000 to 7000 kelvin)and a little blue(4000 to 5000 kelvin).Water absorbs more of anything over 6000k just like Suphew mentioned . someone I brought plants off recently reconed that when you go about 10cm below the water the light intensity basicly halfs, he also thought that colour spectrum didn't matter that much: most of his tanks were about 300mm deep and had one fluorescent tube. woah you have a pretty deep tank im not too sure how much light intensity you'll need to reach the bottom. this site might be useful http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~aphalo/old_pages/lamps.html source http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~aphalo/old_pages/photobio.html I havn't used any of the lamps on that page myself but its an interesting page jordan
  13. its not a very flashy pet store. I probably wouldn't go there looking for fish there. The moss was about the only thing that caught my eye. The store dosn't look like its doing terribly well there hardy ever seems to be many customers in there. but thats the way these things work sometimes I go into the smaller stores and you happen to find something different
  14. thanks for he replies every1. Just wondering because when I went to Hong Kong all the planted tanks I saw there always had no lids. I guess thats a way of keeping cost down..
  15. ah.. not too sure about morehouse, I think ages ago they used to be on Kilmore st called Trendy Aquariums
  16. any yous keep your lids on your planted tanks? I was thinking that it would cut out a bit of the light from hiting the water.
  17. I've recently gone to Trendy Pets at Bush In mall and saw what I first thought was to be java moss. But I noticed the evenly branched, triangle shaped fern like branches and the plant was clinging to the glass walls. I pretty sure its christmas moss although its probably listed as java. Just thought this would be handy if any of yous where thinking of getting some .
  18. sorry about that, I just didn't bother to fill it in when I registered. Im from christchurch
  19. hi everyone Just wondering where can I buy trout pellets, does anyone know? cheers
  20. ARrrrhh.. out of all the chores of tank cleaning I hate cleaning algae off the glass: using a small sponge or a tiny magnet scubber to do the job . :-? just asking what tools do all of you use ?
  21. Does anyone here ever do online shopping for aquarium stuff ? If so can someone tell me where's a good place to buy from . Perferably i'd like to buy NZ or Oz. But if not anywhere else would be fine .
