  1. Yeah, I'd miss mine too. They're just mild mannered little fishes, but there's something incredibly addictive about them.

Mine aren't line bred or anything special, but they're pretty and they're healthy (touch wood) .....when you're ready to set up your tanks again if you can't find healthy line bred breeding stock, you're more than welcome to some of mine.

  2. hi Jude :D

the yoyo looks like a yoyo to me

the golden zebra doesn't look like a zebra (striata) .......not sure what that one is, will have a hunt round see if I can find any info.

  3. My kribs ate the first couple of hatchings, then all of a sudden they figured it out and they were off!! After that they either had eggs or young fry most of the time.

I did end up putting them in a small very well planted tank of their own though as, apart from being extremely aggressive with any other fish when they had eggs, had a feeling it was having the other fish present that encouraged them to eat their eggs/fry.

Haven't got them now as I needed their tank for the rams, and lfs wasn't always eager to take the fry. Living up here it's easier to breed fish that I can find a ready market for.

  4. Best guppy book I've got is one published by t.f.h. 'The Proper Care of Guppies' author Stan Shubel. It's full of practical advice and well written. It doesn't have a chart of the tails I don't think. 'The Guide to Owning Guppies' by Homer Mozart (also published by t.f.h) covers that better.

Both books were available here in NZ, I got them at a lfs last yr.

  5. Would be helpful to know what size tank are you going to put it into, and other tank mates the cichlid will live with. Have you got soft or hard water, planted............think that's all for a start

  6. Got a pair of keyholes, turned out both females (now 3yrs old)........ they lay eggs together  They've always lived together. My other 'pair' of keyholes I presume are males (18 mnths old), cos they don't lay eggs!! Wouldn't it be luverley if they came with little finny m/f tags when they were babies!!

Would it work to put the 2 males into the tank with the females, or better to split the pairs in separate tanks. The tank is big enough, other residents are a gang of cories.

    Advice appreciated thanks

  7. I've got a lot of plants, plus floating plants in my tanks. Good number of the fry survive in there, also the fry feed continuously on the microalgae on the plants.

I feed them very fine fry food.......try to feed at least 3 x daily and do small frequent w/changes to compensate for the extra food going into the tank. Biggest killer of guppy fry is fouled water from all the fine food you feed.

Usually the female guppy looks as though she's going to burst just before she drops the fry.......square looking, though it's not as obvious when they're very young with the first drop.

If you don't have any fry food when the babies arrive you can crush some flakes into a very fine powder.....then crush it again into almost dust and they should be able to eat that.......just don't do what I did the first time ;) gave my 3 fry enough for 30  had to do a rather rapid w/change to get some of the food out!!

  8. Welcome to the forum Paul and Adele :D

Enthusiatic novices.....hmmmmm sounds like a case of MTS (multiple tank syndrome) already  and the good news is.....there doesn't seem to be a cure for the syndrome

Apart from the pearls, what sort of fish would you eventually like to have in the 55 gall?
