  1. a lot of pumps can be run inline go have a look at the pond masters at the water garden on blenheim road or even some of the cheaper pumps at the pet and garden supplies on fitzgerald. the only thing is to expect there to be a lot more noise , i would consider putting the pump in the tank as the inlet for the filter as it will be quieter

  2. yeah thats pretty much what to do extra wireless signal would be a bonus but not necessary will buy a better router at some point. i would just run cables but that would have to be made tidy with proper wall ports which could get expensive so this was my next option . ill give that a crack 2moro

the instructions call it ethernet convertor mode if that fails its most likely a wet ware issue and i may have to find a local network expert that like beer :slfg:

  3. recently i bought this

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ralink-3052-Wir ... 927wt_1111

with the aim of connecting my tv and blue ray player to it, as some sort of wireless bridge so it would basically pick up the wifi signal from my pc's modem and convert it to a wired lan signal as well as outputting wifi again . i think the term is ap client

im unsure about how to configure it so far i have plugged it in to my pc's internet port opened the browser and typed 192.168.16.1 to bring up the menu then go to ap client

then entered my ssid ( thinking its the name of my network, same name as whats on my cell phone wireless menu) and the password but its not connecting when i hit apply and then go plug my other modem back in and plug this into the tv , the tv recognises the modem but cant connect to the internet

    any one got any ideas?

  4. carbon should get rid of the brown tinge but that will depend on what it is to some extent more than likely sediment , you would want some decent carbon though not the cheap stuff. as for lime i hope you dont have any fish in there as the ph will be very high

  5. a local guy tried to save a buck here but making one of those instead of using a cannister filter. turned out he should have just brought a filter by the time he brought all the equipment he needed and media to boot, it cost well in excess of a suitable cannister, something to think about :dunno:

  6. well had fish in for ages now , lost the clowns to marine ich a few weeks back , lost the nem to a power head the week i put it in

not really using the filter socks much as the clog overnight gonna try find some 400micron ones

    heres some photos

all in all tank is going well just taking it slowly got plenty more things i need to set up like the ato and temperature controller

  7. Less oxygen or no oxygen? if anaerobic then nitrate will be converted to nitrite, no? even worse.

Just trying to understand what this quote really means, can someone marine explain please?

it's similar to freshwater with an extra step

ammonia---> Nitrite----> nitrate ----------> nitrogen gas ( bubbles to surface is displaced by oxygen due to water movement)

    (<----Aerobic bacteria--------->) ( anaerobic bacteria)

the live rock is really porous so has a lot surface area exposed for the aerobic bacteria but more importantly has a lot of surface area not exposed for anaerobic bacteria .

its getting a balance of the bacteria that counts otherwise you end up with an excess of nitrates which cause algae issues and are harmful to inverts in small amounts and fish in higher amounts. so you want to minimise media that is designed to harbour aerobic bacteria like sponge, noodles, sintered glass even filter wool to keep a good balance of anaerobic bacteria

  8. to be honest i wouldnt even use a cannister filter with live rock in it , it will still become a sediment trap and who can be bothered cleaning it every couple of days

the live rock will perform just as well in the tank if not better. all good to use it for running carbon temporarily .

even for fish only its still more hassle than its worth get a decent amount of live rock and a decent skimmer and you will be well on your way
