  2. Thanks i will re test later ...Nitrates  have some colour but not as dark as 5.00ppm so in between . At the weekend the tests didn't give me any reason to be concerned ... i always do WCs weekly around 20% sometimes a little more .Both filters are working well and i only clean them using tank water and never do both at the same time...I am a bit lost this time round ....The remaining  fish seem ok i can't see any redness near gills... so keeping fingers crossed i got the water down to  ok levels . I left the skins on but rinsed them first.... its the only thing i can think off  i fed them using flakes and pellets as normal ... Oh well onwards and upwards...

  3.

last readings  from weekend testing using API test kit

    pH   between 7-7.6

    ammonia very pale yellow 0ppm

nitrite  very pale purple so around 0ppm

    Nitrate pale yellow 0 ppm

Now after water changes and removing dead fish

ammonia  yellow  but not  matching next shade on chart so  above 0 will do another wc later

nitrite  slightly darker   purple but not on next shade  between 0- 0.25

same with Nitrate yellow 0 - 5  too high but once i do more WC this should come down... i have added prime to help ...

    Ph all good

Plec are huge just plain nothing special bristlenose around10cm long

I am wondering if they were poisoned by eating cucumber ?? as no sings of red gills ,so sad though feel like getting rid of my big tank  but wont make any hasty decisions...

  4. Hi this morning I woke to find most of my clowns loaches ,one parrot fish , upside down cat fish all dead , two days ago I fed them a small mount of cucumber. Before this all water parms were good temp ok . I am wondering if it is poisoning perhaps there was some residue on the cucumber .Obviously water reading through the roof doing water changes and adding prime .Looked at fish no obvious signs of inflammation around gill areas… This is an established tank running FX6 and back up ehiem tank is 600L Stock levels Clown loaches x 15 Plec x 4 catfish x 2 parrot fish x 2 .

  5. Nitrates are very rarely 0, and can mean one of a few things. One of the most common reasons is the test being performed wrong - which we all have done! The API Nitrates test needs to be done exactly as per instructions or it will give you a reading of 0. Bottle #2 and the Test Tube both need to be shaken for the times given (basically until your arms fall off). It's also good to double check to make sure it's not expired as that will give false results.

Gasping can mean a few things such as

    - Bad water conditions (especially Ammonia)

    - Too high of temp for the fish (probably not this)

    - Low oxygen - sounds like you've been taking measures to increase oxygen levels but at higher temps good surface agitation is needed to oxygenate all the water. You'll also need good flow all around the tank, otherwise you end up with dead spots which allow for the build-up of waste, reduced temperature and reduced oxygen levels. Air stones don't always provide this and sometimes a wavemaker may be preferred.

    - Gill issues, so may be worth double checking the gills for any parasites such as flukes.

Know what you mean about following the instructions and because the nitrate test shows yellow I often re test it to check and it is still yellow not pale nearer to orange really but according to the chart its 0 .The test kit is new. The fish in the community tank don't show any signs of gasping , they appear fine and then they are dead,no visible worms flukes etc.... I will worm the tank to be on the safe side. There is only ever the odd one fish that dies. The surface of the water is moving heaps as the air stones are on full ,the fish love the bubbles....

    Thanks for the advice

  6. It's 26 with no heater on .It all started when the heater got unplugged when we were away in the UK and since then there have been a steady stream of deaths ... I have removed all rocks wood etc on several occasions to check for any hidden corpses ... The plants are mostly crypts.... and Anubias. I am stumped .

  7. Hi I have had a community tank running for around 5 years and although the water parameters remain stable ph around 7.2 -ammonia 0 (very pale yellow )nitrite 0 (pale blue ) Nitrate 0 (yellow ). Temp sits around 25. This year I have kept losing fish recently its been bristlenoses but I have lost lots over the last year no of them appeared distressed just the next day /night I found the odd one dead ... . at the time of finding dead fish I have checked the water and the readings have all been good. There are no signs of red gills, gasping prior death. The fish look normal just DEAD!! The tank is 360L running an Eheim 2217 lots of air stones, several plants. I set up the tank with Daltons aquatic mix... and very fine black grit on the top. Feeding every 2 days with flakes pleco wafers etc and the very occasional blood worm .

Inhabitants are 30 neon's, 6 cardinals, 5 bristlenose , 3 yoyo loaches , 1 gourami ,6 catfish ,3 synodontis. plus a few odds and ends WC s around 25% weekly and i add prime .I am wondering if I need to strip down the tank and replace/remove the Daltons , would that be causing any problems?

    Any suggestions

    Thanks Gill

  8. Any feedback as to how well they work.... My FX5 is playing up yet again, I have decided I am jinxed with it .It stopped last week we took it a part cleaned it checked it fiddled and it went all going well yesterday... but its not going ... It is cleaned regularly , the impler looks fine, it was replaced by HFF with a new fx6 motor recently ... Never had trouble with Eheim so looking at getting 2x Eheim Classic 600 2217, the tank is 540L.

  9. I actually prefer the plecs so try and keep the water parameters around pH 7.5 but it has crept up a little to 8 which is better for the fontosa who previously had been kept at a ph between 7-8 she came from Animates . As the plecs enjoy digging in the sand i will keep the sand as is ,i was going to replace it with something a little coarser and less likely to cloud the tank .But they seem to enjoy digging and burying themselves in it .The filter is a FX5 upgraded to the 6 motor . 30% WCs every week. Lights are T5 which will eventually change to LEDs . Next challenge is to try and get some plants to grow or rather keep rooted in the substrate. The parrots add some much needed colour and they were a gift for Mothers day a few years ago. There a 3 fry left over from the Lake Malawi Zebras, which i will move on when they a little bigger.

Feeding is 3 times a week and usually consists of flakes, algae/ Spirulina tablets ,courgette, cucumber and the occasional .freeze-dried bloodworms, mainly for the parrots.

  10. Made lots of changes to my big tank, now has alpine rock work ,still with some wood ,home to one golden plec and three brown plecs, 2 parrot fish and one female fontosa, and three baby Zebras left over when i gave the other away.Much happier with the setup now .

  11. There is some on TM and its got about 5 leaves and a 40cm stem at 8.00 ,so the clump in the middle is easily worth +50.00 and as its going to the hospice you should/might be able to get more . Also Anubias is hard to get hold off .

Some people would prefer to support a place like the hospice rather than buying from a commercial business.

  12. Nitrates too high, water changes here i go. I thought i was getting off too lightly with daily water changes during the filter problems, Oh well . I will do a 50% change and re test . and continue until the levels improve I will add some more media from a another filter tomorrow.

  13. Hi this afternoon i noticed this fish was hiding behind the wood, not looking good, scales sticking out and a very cloudy eye . Just about to test water, but could be anything as this is the tank i have been doing daily WCs due to filter trouble i have been running a small filter with plenty of air etc..

  14. I have flagged making them ,i don't like the look or the idea of using poly and cement,so went to Stone and Water world got some nice alpine rocks/slabs...in the process of using some aquarium safe sealant to secure before adding to tank..
