  1. Hi all,

I'm going to be setting up an NZ Freshwater tank in the very near future and have some questions.

    • Where is a good place to find freshwater fish/crays/shrimp in Auckland?

Would it be possible to have an eel, and if so, what do these eat? I wouldn't want a large one.

Would it be possible to have the freshwater crays etc in with fish or would they be likely to eat them? I don't really mind about this aslong as the fish are free (:P).

What kind of current would I need, if any?

Anything to stay well clear of (illegal etc)?

Any help would be mucho appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Chris.

  2. Hi all (especially Caryl, Alan, Pegasus, Cess, Goldie, TC, Andrew, Dennis, sorry if I missed out any of you older-forum members ;),

After a very long no posting period I'm now back. What a hectic 2004! After selling up and only keeping my display tank, I'm now looking at setting up two NZ tanks - a saltwater NZ tank and a freshwater. Any help on these 2 would be VERY much appreciated.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know ;)

    Chris.

  3. I disagree with CHRIS.L he said near the start of this forum, that platy have between 30 and 40 fry. I apologise for being picky about the subject but my platy tend to give birth to between 100-150 fry every 4 weeks.

I've never heard of a platy giving that much fry ?

  4. Am in Auckland now. Cold and wet day. Trip up was uneventful and boring since all we could see was grey :D

Met a couple of our club members at the airport. They had flown in from Wgtn. The Downs family are here and apparently headed into town to shop.

Will wait for the others to arrive later.

I'll be at the airport later on today! :D

  5. Oh o, Alans getting e-bashed ;)!

In other news - that was a VERY bad reply breakaway. If you don't care about your fish - why did you get them? It's really disappointing seeing someone ask for advice, the whole community (almost) tells them to get rid of the fish, you leave it there, another one eats it and it could spread.

With an attitude like that, no one will give you advice because what's the point if it goes in one ear and out the other?

    Chris-

  6. Here's what I found on the internet. Search for Fish Tuberculosis and it'll bring heaps of results on http://www.google.com

    Tuberculosis

A specimen with Tuberculosis usually shows little signs of the disease at first. It may feed normally but will lose weight as its internal organs start to become damaged. Sometimes, skin nodules develop which soon ulcerate and in some cases, causes popeye (though popeye should not be regarded as Tuberculosis). Fish Tuberculosis can actually infect humans and strict sanitary conditions should be observed though only a small chance of serious internal infection exists. There are no medications currently available to treat infected fish and all fish infected should be euthanized. All fish in the same environment should be removed from the tank and placed in a hospital tank where they can be watched. All affected materials can then be cleaned, disinfected and reassembled though in a reef tank, when should basically not add any additional live stock to the setup for a period of a month or two while observing livestock for signs of disease.

  7. Yeah, But I just cant figure out why my neons arent schooling anymore ?

It might be because you don't have enough, but it look like you have added a few fish over the last week or so, so I wouldn't add anymore..

The pics/tank is looking good :)

  8. Hey guys, :D This is my first post in this forum.

I would like to suggest a good marine shop in the central north island -Rotorua. That has a good stock of fish and corals and fish supplies. and have shipments coming in all the time. There tanks are always clean and healthy and would recommend this shop to anyone passing through Rotorua. They are called Wonderworld Aquarium & Pet Centre and are located at 82 Clayton Road in Rotorua. I think they use to be the aquarium place located in kuirau park a few years back.

Thanks for the heads up. I was not aware that there was an aquarium place there. I will check it out when I next head up that way.

    Cheers!

  9. Great idea!! how about a cold water marine, local rockpools etc could be a good learning curve and at least if things look a bit seedy you can put them back!

I'm doing one of these when my tank becomes ready. Was going to do one in a 1500mm long tank, but though otherwise :D
