  1. Nice colours! I also have a Mr lonely in my Mbuna tank for the same reason.
  2. Hey all, im pretty sure my ice blue is holding, she's not eating and has a "bulgy throat" almost identical to the one in this post...... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/is-my- ... 24160.html How long do they hold for? Is she holding eggs or fry at this stage (been about 2 weeksish)
  3. Aggression from severums or africans?
  4. Yeah I was thinking that but ive seen a couple of sites that say people have kept severums in 8.0+ PH
  5. Would two golden (I think) severums be fine with a group of 7 smallish (4-5cm) africans (socolofi, ice blues, orange malawi) in a 260l tank? They are fairly mellow tempered fish in general. Theres a couple in the pet store i have my eye on.
  6. It's the male OB zebra, just noticed hes started to nip the ice blues fins too :-? so gonna definatly have to do something. I put him in "jail" for a bit by putting a piece of glass in the corner of the tank and putting him in that but he broke out! Don't have another tank (except a 34l community tank) to put him in and theres no decent fish shops that supply cichlids in Dunedin so kinda have limited options. Might just quarantine him in the corner again a bit better untill I can get some more off trademe or something.
  7. Ive got a 270l tank with 5 africans (OB zebras, ice blues and a orange malawi i think) and a large golden algae eater and have had them since they were juvaniles and all was good. They have all started to get there colors which is cool. Recently though a bully has emerged and started chasing the others constantly. To start with it was quite interesting to watch him dig around and claim caves as his own but now hes claimed the whole tank and confines the others to the top third of the tank away from the rocks etc. I tried moving everything around hoping that they might all settle to there own areas but that seems to have made it worse! Whats the solution? More fish? Remove the bully?
  8. Hi all i am currently in the process of cycling a 260l tank intended for cichlids of some variety depending on what i can get. I have got the Ph and KH about right (8-8.4 and 200ppm) but the general hardness is a bit low (40ppm). Ive done a bit of research and it seems adding epsom salts will increase the GH. I was wondering if epsom salts will effect the Ph or KH in any way. Also if theres anyone in Dunedin with an excess of cichlids I would be happy to purchase them as the local fish stores seem to have a fairly average range (and knowledge) of cichlids.
  9. Cool cheers for the feedback guys, I think insulation will be the most viable option at them moment. until we can buy another heater at least.
  10. Hey all, we have just got a tropical fish tank. Its a 34l Aqua one tank with 5 tetras, a dwarf gourami and a yellow algae eater in it. They seem to be doing fine but we live in a crappy student flat (no insulation, heater etc etc) and have noticed the tank temperature can drop as low as 21 degrees! There is no place in the house where they will be any warmer. We currently have 50w heater, would an upgrade to a 100w or even bigger be the simple fix for this problem?
