  1. sorry ljtan55 your post didn't show until after i wrote! yeah i see the difference. do you have to get the special bulbs for it? yeah i've checked it is extendible. maybe you're starting to change my mind, would look pretty nice...!
  2. its a nice light but the costs will be adding up with the bulbs as well... and would a 91cm stretch to the 93cms of my glass lids? probably not eh. i intend to put the lights on top of my glass lids, just sitting on top.
  3. the tank is medium planted with some of the plants likely to grow a lot once the lighting improves. i can't really spend too much, got my horses, dogs and cats to think of as well, but i've seen double aqua one lights for $120 or a jebo 2nd hand similar price including bulbs. is this the T5? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =103281063 how much would the bulbs be? might not quite fit on my tank with the cover (comes to 93cms), maybe aqua one or Jebo?! Decisions decisions...!!!
  4. yeah $800 is way outta my budget! i was thinking around $100-130 ish. is T5 a brand?!
  5. thanks Ian. yeah she seems healthy enough, all my fish seem very well which is good. some days its brighter than others this lightness, she is eating and i'll keep an eye out for her belly, not where she's hiding right now.
  6. thanks. i'd ideally like just one unit that sits on the glass lids or clips on somehoe, i don't like the idea of me constructing it, i'm not so good at diy! the lights on pet planet, how would they work? my light at the moment is in a case with a regular light bulb, yep not ideal and need something better but easy to set up. there are some aqua one lights i've seen, double ones, are they any good? ta.
  7. hi, i have several bristlenose in my community tank, one of the larger ones who've had the longest (a few months now) is going a bit light in colour, as if she might have a kind of growth on her? mainly around her head area and along her back. is this bad? what should i do? all the other bristlenoses seem fine as do all of the other fish in the tank. thanks.
  8. it is 41cms deep and 39.5cms wide. cheers.
  9. hi, i've decided to upgrade the light on my 90cm long aquarium as the current one just isn't doing the job. my local fish shops don't seem to stock many, there are many on trademe at the moment so i'd like some advice on what you think i should get? the 3 glass lids make the length slighly longer than 90cms if it was to attach with clips etc so maybe one that rests on the top would be best. would i need single or double bulb holding capacity? thanks.
  10. i'll have to see if the shop can get me a couple more, he was the last one. thanks.
  11. thanks for the reply smidey. i just phoned the shop and found out he is a bengal loach looks like: http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Botia_dario.php he was the only one there, this link says they should be kept in groups, does anyone know if thats right? cheers.
  12. i bought an awesome looking loach today but by the time i got home forgot what he was called. he is about 2-3 inches long with barbels/whiskas, he is black striped with a creamy colour to begin with that turns to a really light shade of orange? his fins are all clear/creamy coloured. i've been trying to take some pics of him but he's too far in the corner, my pics aren't very revealing at present. does anyone know what he might be? also does anyone know if its normal for bristlenoses' to lighten in colour in parts? my largest bristlenose (about 5") has some light coloured patches on her back... is this normal? cheers.
  13. thats what i'm trying to work out. as you can see earlier in this post i was advised to put the australe golds in a separate tank and now they seem quite happy... i thought the g.nigeriatum needed the same thing possibly as they became very very shy also.
  14. oh ok. the tank they all were in had many places to hide and theres a layer of java fern at one end to block light a bit, i have a few gouramis in the community tank and they're not so fond of bright light. in the new tank which is just the 6 killies now, theres some java moss, java fern and a cave, would that be enough? is it best to have them in there alone and swimming around together or hiding in the community tank and rarely seen?! i know what i'd rather.
  15. since taking out the australe golds they seem a lot happier. the weird thing was though that since i took out the austale golds, the g.nigeriatum trio started to be very quiet also to the point where i hardly saw the male any more. i decided i'd put them in with the other killies and got the male and one female out 2 days ago and finally the other female (after ages, she is really quick!) yesterday. They all seem fine in the small tank, is it ok for them all to be together? How do things work out as far as breeding goes? One or two females look a little bulgy at present. thanks.
  16. i have a double trap but the babies keep swimming between the two sections. i'm not sure when all the females are due, some look bigger than others, not really enough room for 5/6 females eh. maybe i'll be scooping babies out too, its a mission though...
  17. i bet they would Alan! the australe golds seem to be going a bit better in the other tank, i get to see that lovely looking male for once! he's even been paying a bit of interest in his ladies!
  18. i have some java moss in the bottom of the tank but only in one area, there are many plants so that wouldn't be a problem. the problem might be my trio of killifish, a pair of dwarf gouramis, a pair of pearl gouramis, 6 zebra danios, about 10 adult guppies (including the males), 3 rainbow fish and 4 cochus blue... i don't think the catfish would be a threat. it is a fairly big tank but iif i was to release them surely they'd get preyed upon? or should i try and source more java moss? cheers.
  19. thank you. how much should i feed and how often? they are eating the ground up flake food. will they eat microworms? i have some of them too... cheers.
  20. hi, a couple of my guppies have given birth in a breeding net so there are now several fry at the bottom of the net. there are about 6 or so other girls due in the next week or two also. i was aiming to keep the fry in my spare tank but i have a few fish that aren't doing too well in the community tank so they are in there and they would readily eat the fry... please could someone give me advice on what to feed the fry? are they ok to be left in the net? if i release them in the community tank its likely the gouramis, killifish or danios might eat them so they must stay in the net for safety. there are 13 or so at the moment but the other females will increase the numbers in due course. also one of my females has been lying on her side for a day or two, she is the one who gave birth though, its not looking too good, she's hardly moving now, is she likely to recover? Thanks.
  21. thanks heaps Alan, it might take me some time to find him! i'll let you know how i get on.
  22. Hi Alan, Yes i have 2 tanks (one 28L, the other 100L+), but have a female guppy in there at the moment thats acting weird (she looks like she's drunk, swimming sideways, head down/up), should i put them in there with her? I'm not sure either which females are the australe gold and which are the g.nigeriatum. how can i distinguish between the two please? Thanks.
  23. hi, i got a trio of australe golds and a trio of gardneri nigeriatum off trademe a few weeks ago, they all arrived alive and i slowly introduced them to my peaceful community tank. my male australe gold has been a bit of a concern ever since. he hid after being in the tank only a short time. he didn't eat on the first night. i was particularly worried the next morning as he had burried himself headfirst in the gravel. i actually thought he was dead but went to dig him out and realised he was still alive. i added meth blue to the tank and put him a breeding/sick net at the top of the tank to keep him safe, he ate a little that night and things were looking up. he escaped out of the net that night (tank is well covered luckily), the next morning he was at the bottom of the tank hiding under bog wood. he came out of his shell and was seen swimming around, eating like the others, all seemed good. over the last week or two he has hid nearly all the time. i rarely see him. there are many places to hide in the tank so hard to know where he is. i keep thinking he's dead as i rarely see him eat (live food, flake, frozen bloodworms etc) but i just saw him lurking in the corner (last sighting was 2-3days ago). what can i do for him if anything? his 2 females are fine and the trio of g.nigeriatum are going well too. thanks.
  24. thanks for the thread, a beautiful fish but my tank would be too small at only a metre long. yeah the thread i was reading before was very accurate!
  25. yeah he was a handsome boy! how big exactly do they grow i've read different facts?
