  1. This is more a "Hi Im back " I have been very busy involved in the live lobster export industry and created a family in my time away . My interests include all fresh water and marine vertebrates and invertebrates. As a hobbyist I have kept many species including a few I shouldn't ( Perca fluviatilis) of none I ever released. I have a fascination with New Zealand native fresh water species and obviously some introduced. I am passionate about removing koi carp from our water ways and reinstating wetlands . As an avid water user (fishing ,diving ,surfing ,observing ) water quality is another issue that alarms me. It is due to these interest I thought I would log on here and see if I could make any contributions
  2. very sad all died...strange thing tho was i saw a tiny worm either coming out or going in a dead fry,is this a parasite or a scavenger???. well i might have to stick with my wcmm i have over 50 fry healthy and no problems there..
  3. thanks guys n girls, went and got some brine shrimp on the go as we speak.will keep informed...expencive little shrimps..
  4. have been keeping golden barbs for some time and had a few spawns..move eggs to another tank ,had problems with fungi killing off eggs so used meth blue and get them to hatch .first few days use liqua fry to feed em and get them to about 3 weeks and i think they starve to death ..as they look like they get realy skinny then die.was wondering what i should be feeding them??and for how long and how much?have some more on the go but by the time i got the eggs out i have only about 15 fry .very fusterating as i have white clouds and they are no problem at all ....
  5. did a little research..seems leches are low DO (dissolved oxygen) tolerent, even going to say they like it ..maybe you need more airation or water circulation??
  6. little blighters are fine up here in the fine weathered north..lol as i say this it is raining but still 19C
  7. I am currently studing marine tech .Looking at Giant kokopu as my study species.Doing a little research first so i dont give myself an impossable task..In the future i would very much like to be involved in wetland recontruction and re introduction of our native species..As for banded kokopu i have personly caught quite a few in local streams ,discovered they are zero tolerant to ammonia so an established set up is needed. Also collected alot of red finned bullies.make a very nice addition to a native tank but the males are very teratorial.
  8. I noted you said the fishes anus was red \inflamed?This is a good indication of a bacterial infection.I would follow the intructions on your salts and give him a bath. Also any other fish that are showing symptoms as you dont want it spreading. It is possable that due to spawning he has become a little stressed.Golden barbs are usally pretty hardy fish but can be suceptible to bacterial infections. hope this helps ,,,I will do some research and get back to you on it..
  9. Puntius sachsi\puntius semifasciolatus..golden barbs.Any one breeding these nice little fish?Looking for some females to increase my gene pool.

  13. About half of New Zealand’s native freshwater fish species are diadromous. That is, they spend part of their life cycle at sea and migrate to fresh water for the remainder of the cycle. But some species it is possable to hatch and raise soley in fresh water... ahhh thats what i was tring to say...hahaha.
  14. yes all realised "but"gaint kokopu spawn later so the juviniles are not a usual catch in white baiters nets. Most of there catch are young inanga. This stage can be bipassed as land locked populations exist ,lake Brunner for example. Thanks for your reply.
  15. I am interested on any infomation about breeding in captivity..Yes i realise they are amphidromous .Alot of my own research has discovered contrasting claims....for example a NIWA site claims that eggs have never been discovered ,but i have (from a very reliable source)been told of sucessful hatching from wild collected eggs so...confused!!!! http://www.niwascience.co.nz/rc/freshwa ... ant_kokopu any one out there been there done that i would very much appreciate any information.. ps land locked populations exist so they dont need the marine stage to repoduce..
  16. thanks guys [& girls] ..Interested in Giant kokopu,Galaxias argenteus.espesh breeding in captivity..so.............
