  1. 400mg per 40 ltrs water daily after a 50% water change for 5-10 days.

Increase temp to 33 deg. with plenty of airation in tank.Use similar temp water and treated water for wc.

    hth,

    ron

Thanks for that, i will give it a go.

  2. I have treated our discus for hex twice now, mid way through each treatment it starts pooing normally then we go back to white fluffy feaces and spitting its food again.

I treated it in a hospital tank with metronidazole 200mg to 40 litres of water. I have done 2 courses now.

The fish is happy enough and not skinny yet but isnt eating much.

It is keen to eat but spits it out.

Any suggestions?or do i put it out of its misery now, it looks too well to do that!!

  3. We have upgraded our tank to a 200 litre community tank with, guppies, platies, gbas and bristlenoses.

The albino pleco seems to be breathing fast, he is otherwise ok and the other fish are fine the current temp is 28.5oC the heaters are set at 24.

Is this too warm for these fish?

  4. I just wanted to say a huge congratulations and good on you for rescuing the poor goldfish. You did the right hting and I'm sure if she could talk she'd be thanking you!!

It makes me so MAD that people can be so cruel and heartless!

Thanks for that!! yeah she is a pretty happy goldfish now, i often feel sorry though for the other goldfish that we left behind in the tank that they didnt want to sell!!

  5. I should add that I put mine into a bare heated tank with no filtation or airstone as I think a decent filter would blow them all over the place. Whiteworms will stay alive about a day and I siphon off what excess there is each day and put in fresh. I only feed whiteworms for the first week to give them a good start, them start giving as many other foods as I can get to get them use to it. I don't sell them until about 7 weeks but I go by size. I have a heat lamp and reptile light for the babies (not the adults) as they are in the garage with no windows. The water goes green after a while and I use that to grow daphnia (fed also to the babies)

Ok thanks for that. i will start offering more variety i actually saw it eat last night which was great as i have only been presuming from what food is left over so i feel a lot better now.

  6. You are way ahead of us. We got our first eggs of the season laid this week

Really? she has laid three clutches of eggs in the last two months!! she seems to have settled down latley though, but i certainly have enough eggs to look after at the moment, especially for begginers!!

The first hatchling is now one week old and has finally started to eat some blood worms, is there anything else i can try and feed it?? we have tried frozen turtle food (broken into tiny peices) and turtle pellets but its only inetrested in the blood worms so far.

Also how old does it need to be before we can rehome it?

  7. I have had eggs that collapsed like that and they were still good, just got a bit dry towards the end,you can rehydrate them if this is the case by draping a wet paper towel over them and moistening the substrate, something that comes with experience,on the other hand I have had eggs that swelled up from too much water and even burst.ateaspoon or two of water warmed in the palm of your hand and sprinkled over the egg would not hurt, followed by the damp towel, check if they fill out a bit after a day or so.

The first two eggs did this too hence why i was so surprised that one hatched i had resigned myself to the fact that they were no good, but i will try your advice and see what happens, thanks.

  8. My advice would be to keep the shells moist (and therefore soft) and let them do their own thing. There can be major differences in hatch times even in the same batch and the temptation is to try and rush it. They sort it out themslves best I think.

I do wonder if i was a bit quick in rushing in, i was worried that it may have been trying to get out and presumed that seem it was laid the same tim e it would of been ok, but i will know for the next lot.

3 of thgem look nice and round but two have folded up underneath so we may be lucky to get three babies. they are due about the 13th of october.

  9. Did Goggles recover any eyesight?

I dont think so, both eyes look damaged on the inside and it still takes her a while to sniff out the food where as the others see it on the surface but it hasnt stopped her finding the food!!

  10. I just wanted to update everyone on "Goggles" the fish we rescued.....

I finally got the outdoor pond that i wanted, its not big but about 300 litres maybe.

Goggles is now happy as, with her other 6 goldfish friends and really healthy.

We decided not to put her in mums larger pond as they are mostly 30cm sized monsters and may of hassled her.

We are hoping that she may breed with the other fish......maybe it would be a great ending to the story????

  11. leave them in the hatching container till the belly button is gone, cover them with a damp paper towel to prevent dehydration, usually they come out and bury themselves into the medium, then when they are ready surface and start looking for water. The yolk sac is very prone to infection or rupture if you put them in the water too soon.As for the other egg,if its clean and white just wait, there is no fixed time even for eggs of the same batch, tampering will result in tradgedy.you probably could put some acrflavine or similar in the water, but i would advise take it out paint the area with some dilute iodine etc after a day or so.[/quote

Hi, thanks for the advice we still have 5 other eggs that are due to hatch in a month so i will know better for next time, the first hatchling is doing great though ,very active and his belly button is almost sealed and looks really healthy...

I opened the other egg as the shell started to look a little mouldy, the turtle was alive but very weak so i am not too confident about this one.

He was completly squashed by the large yolk sac it seemed to cover him and he was squashed against the side of the egg shell his left side is deformed in the way that his eye looks cloudy his front leg is very weak and the claws are deformed, he also holds his head to the right, so i am doing my best for him but when i hold him in the water he gets quite active.

It is in a small container on a damp handy towel but i will cover him with

  12. Hi, i posted a topic about two months ago regarding "Turtle eggs".

We had them floating in a container in the top of our discus tank and to our surprise one of them started to hatch yesterday afternoon!!

After the initial shock of it as i had no idea that they would hatch i now have a few question regarding the babies.....

The hatchling is now swimming in a small tank with heated water and a light and access to a flat rock, it still has its yolk sac, is that normal for it to still be attached?? it hatched out about 7pm last night.

The other egg hasnt hatched yet, do i leave it?? or do i try and open it??

Anything else i need to know would be great too. Thanks in advance.

  13. I think you have a water quality problem and suggest regular water changes. 20% weekly at least as your tank is quite small. From what I have read dropsy is very very dificult to cure.

If the water levels are ok, how can i tell if its a water quality problem??

All the tests have shown nothing. i do weekly water changes of 25% at the moment.

  14. I have a 100litre tank set up with guppies and a bristlenose, all the fish have been healthy until a few weeks ago when i started losing guppies....

I have lost about one a week over the last 4 weeks.

The first few were heavily pregnant females that would swell up then start breathing fast and two of them got dropsy then they would die.

I have a male one at the moment that has a slightly bloated stomach and is now sitting on the bottom.

Two of the females had the slimy faeces aswel (hex???) so i have been treating them with Trichozole tablets at the dose of one crushed tablet(250mg) then dissolve in water and soak some flake then freeze, i give them this daily.

The water ph is 7.0, nitrite 0 ammonia 0.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated i dont want to lose any more.

  15. last time i tried to measure him (about a week ago), he was over 26cm including tail :)

Wow! thats pretty big, this one has got some growing to do then, the pet shop said it wouldnt get very big!! mind you i have know idea how long it had been unwell for and maybe its stunted, but its definatly filling out now.

  16. Hi, we just brought an albino pleco about three weeks ago, he had been at the petshop for ages and look really skinny and sickly!! so after weeks of feeling sorry for it i brought it.

I have quarantined it and treated the white spot and hex and it is now in our discus tank (200 liters) it is about 6cmlong at the moment and it is finally filling out and growing and looking healthy.

How big do they grow? and also our one is more of a reddy brown colour on its body, do they lighten as they grow??

    Thanks in advance.

  17. Does it have corregated hoses? Our Fluval does, and after you restart it the damn thing spits out pale ginger fluffy looking gunk all over the tank, takes a day to clear.

Probably should clean them out with a brush on a wire, but that means I will have to disconnect the whole lot off the tank and Co2 system... lazy, eh?

no it doesnt, the tubes are smooth and look reasonably clean too.

  18. does that filter ,come with those noodles? ,as they can be quite dusty

Yes it does, it has been running a while now, i think i need to pull it apart tonight and make sure that every thing is where it should be.

  19. Be sure that the connections in the filter are sitting true and that the rubber grommits are sealing them properly. I am talking about the baskets and pump aligning up properly with a good seal.

Can be a bit tricky getting it right.

Also try adding more filter wool to the top basket.

i will have a look at that tonight and let you know, thanks.

  20. did you check the tubing? often they do get clogged up and need a clean. well mine do anyways. :-?

no i didnt this time, but it hasnt been doing an excellent job really the whole time, does it matter that the inlet pipe is right at the bottom of the tank and the spray bar is under the water.

would either of these cause a problem??

  21. We have got a Aqua one cf 1000 canister filter it is running a 200litre tank at the moment, i have had it set up a while now (3months) but it never keeps the water chrystal clear, today i noticed tiny bits of stuff floating all around, its like the small stuff isnt getting trapped in the filter.

i also watched some particles go floating right past the inlet part of the filter, it should be sucking all that stuff up too.

Any ideas whats going on?? The filter nevr came with a very good instruction manual so maybe its not set up right.
