  1. Ha ha, and there I was hoping I would be able to quit my day job!!!
  2. I pulled them out and they were covered in gunk. Will set up another tank so that next time I can remove the bristlenoses that seem to be their biggest threat. Live and learn.
  3. I moved my ram eggs into a breeding net and placed it next to the outflow for good 'aeration'. Now, the eggs always were creamy white, they are still creamy white... on day two some had begun to go clearer... but now they're all white again... thats bad news right? Should I dispose of them or what?
  4. How much do you think peple would pay for rams? and why do the shop one often die?
  5. Ok, I know its a fun thrill, but if I was to breed some fish what do I do with them then? I don't want to feed them to other fish, is there a market for them? Eg. Bristlenoses, Rams etc...
  6. So helpful everyone! What would I do without this site?!!! ....hmm, probably panic a lot more!
  7. How do I go about setting up a new tank? If I transfer some water from my current tank is there anyway of short cutting the month long process?
  8. My rams weren't having any luck chasing away my bristlenoses, they just weren't put off at all and several times I saw them on the leaf having a good meal. I will be getting my other tank set up tomorrow so I can separate them accordingly.
  9. I have removed the eggs and placed them in a breeding net. i feel terrible!!! But best they survive than get gobbled by bristlenoses eh?
  10. so if I put the leaf and eggs into a breeding net/trap and place it near the outflow so they are well 'ventilated' all should be well?
  11. supposing the eggs survive the night and eventually hatch, how will the rams look after them in a community tank with a bristlenose bully? Will they try to eat them? Or do they only like the eggs? Should I put the eggs into a breeding net? Our breeding tank is not set up yet.
  12. The bristlenose keeps hanging about them and was just sitting on their leaf!!! I want this batch to be successful... do you think its fine for me to put the bristlenose into the breeding net?!!!! I don't want to interupt the rams!!!
  13. I agree that the Blenheim Rd Critter Kingdom is terrible. The woman followed her eyes round at us like we were stealing or something!!! Tanks didn't seem so nice either. Organism is supurb. Redwood Aquatics always seemed great to me before I knew about Organism! But you're right, their service is slow and when I bought a 60L tank at xmas the guy told me it would be fine as a marine tank... ha ha ha... a few weeks later when we went to set up he had obviously changed his tune! I often feel a bit stupid when asking questions at any of the shops, like .. hang on gotta go save my rams eggs fromt he bristlenose!! ahhhhh
  14. Yes, the fish are now very happy! I rinse the sponges every time I do a water change (weekly), it just never occured to me that the outpipe would get clogged. There was still a reasonable amount of water coming through it. Lessons learned!
  15. Thanks, I cleaned out the outflow pipe and a load of gunge came out... smelt lovely! Now the water flow is a billion times faster! It had slowly been getting less and less until I had finally noticed it wasn't quite right, now all is well again. Hopefully now all the dusty looking algae will get off my plants!!!
  16. Is a possible reason for an apparent lack of water flow because the filter is getting clogged up? Set the tank up in mid January, haven't replaced the blue or green sponges in the filter yet, but have changed the black once and the white regularly. This fish have been gasping for air a little. I did a water chage a couple of nights ago which solved the problem, but now the rams are back at the top. The water doesn't look to be moving much cos all the bits of debris seem to just float in the water, not actually move anywhere and the surface seems pretty still. Ideas?
  17. Right... I sure have been busy over the past ten minutes! Have done a partial water change, rinsed out the filter material and raised the water outliet to increase the oxygen and movement of the water. Fingers crossed that this solves the problem! All fish seem to be swimming in the bottom again and nibbling at food. Just when you think all is well and you understand your tank it throws something at you!!!
  18. Yes, I think tap water does have a higher oxygen content, one because its been moving about heaps and also because cold water has more oxygen in it... will raise the outflow now to cause more flow
  19. Good evening everyone... Got home tonight and fish were all haging out at the top of the tank. There was some gunge clogging the outflow of water, so I removed that. An hour later many of the fish are still gulping at the top and those who are at the bottom are 'breathing' pretty heavily and the bristlenoses are making dashes to the top for air also. I've put about 500mls of cold water into the tank to try an increase the oxygen... Any other ideas?
  20. Any ideas of what very low plants i could get for my 60L tank? The plants in my tank tend to grow too big or get scrappy and messy.

    Bugger

She does looks a bit depressed in the photograph... you have to look for these signs you know!
  22. When I was a kid playing in the trough down on the farm we had both of these. The back swimmers used to hang out on the top, just beneath the surface, basking in the sun, their movements were more like moquito larvae. The boatmen looked more like a beetle to me and would zoom up to the surface, grab some air, and scoot back down to the bottom again. We put little fish from the creek (cockabillies?) in there and they all lived happily for quite a number of years. I used to spend days playing in the trough all through summer... was only the bloodworms that used to gross me out!!!! I hope this fascinating insight into my childhood helps you in someway!!! Oh the memories!!! sigh....
  23. What is the ideal temperature for two goldfish in a 70litre tank? What is the most I could hold in a tank this size? Are there any tropical fish that can share a tank with goldfish? A bristlenose?
  24. I'm hoping that with the ph in my tank dropping that the conditions tonight will be just perfect for my rams... they'd better get their business socks on! My breeding net is waiting to be used! Does anyone know if it would work to put neons into the breeding net to do their business and then leave the lights off in the tank for the days needed to hatch the fry, or would that not be dark enough?
  25. Oh no! Very sorry about your fish! Maybe you could but her one of those fish coffins for sale on trademe!
