My two males do the jaw locking and circling thing, are you sure they females? I have two pairs and the dominant male and does that with the other male before spawning with either of the females. That is how I tell when they going to spawn. Might be different with yours, just what I observed with mine.
-
Thanks, they growing fast and some are about 30mm. I've had another batch and they are about 10mm now. Have about 100 fry and another female holding now. The dolphins are really going for it now. I have 2 females that breed and think I might have one male and 3 females. The smallest of the 4 have not spawned yet, so might be male/female.

An update. Have about 8-10 freeswimming fry. :bounce: :bounce: They are real small and mum and dad are proud parents and tend to them well. Took some pics, but not that good. Need to get a better camera with zoom. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k61/m ... 0_0358.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k61/m ... 0_0364.jpg My dolphins were also spawning this morning and I managed to get a couple of pics. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k61/m ... 0_0362.jpg http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k61/m ... 0_0361.jpg Will try and get some pics of fry and post it later. :bounce:

African, if you can get me some it will be choice. I will pay for both bags and shipping, let me know if you can get some. I do believe the containers is the better option. I'll have to move all fish at one time and have huge poly boxes to put bags in. Space is the problem. Will need a few containers to seperate fish, if I bag them and put all in poly boxes I've got it will just fit.
-
Good idea, thought about that. Problem is I need to move all at the same time and space will be a problem. I saw some large bags before and it was thick and will not be a problem using them. They use it for moving larger fish. Will use containers as last resort. I got some big poly containers to put bags in and will serve as back-up if bags leak. Got about 100- 200 smaller ones to move aswell, but they can go in bags no problem. The large ones will have to be seperated so males don't give females hard time. Have containers to move the water I need to save and setup new tanks, but it will go on trailer. Do that week or so in advance, but don't want to risk it with fish on trailer. Will be happier to see them in back of car.

Hi I got a pair of Viejitas as a present after I lost some fish recently. I put them in with my Eunotus and they all seem to be happy. The past couple a days the female did not show at feeding time and tonight I started searching for her. I found her hiding in a flowerpot and after getting a torch to have a better look I found some wrigglers at the bottom. There is no way of moving them and I don't know how old they are. Suppose they only a couple of days old. They are in a 120L tank with some other Apistos. Anybody bred these before? Do I feed them BBS once free swimming and/or greenwater? Any help and advice welcome.

I've got Kenyi, Auratus, Bubblebees, Ice blue zebra, Rainbow auratus, Electric yellows, Lumpheads, Aurora, Johanni and random convicts I adopted all in one tank. They breed and the younger ones will start breeding soon, as I introduced some species later. They one big happy community and no problems. I've heard of Kenyi and Auratus being bullies and trouble, but have not had problems with mine. My Kenyi male is about 15cm and the biggest in the tank. He gets stroppy when spawning, but don't harm the others, just chase them out his bedroom.

I've got to agree with herefishiefishie, it depends on different factors. I've been keeping fish, including Malawis for ages. I've never had any problems with hybrids. I've got a 5 foot tank and have about 9 different species in there. In my opinion just get your stock level right and try to keep more females to male ratio. I've never had problems with fighting and the only time I had a female worse for wear was when having one female to a male. Don't mix same species, like peacocks or zebra and you should be ok. If possible stock all fish at the same time, or if you introduce new ones do it after lights out or when feeding the other ones. I know some people will differ from my opinion, but listen to all and use what you think is best. There are lots of experienced people on the forum and I learn new things daily. Good luck, have fun stocking your tank.

'multiple tank syndrome' comes with the hobby

Hi Seems like heaps of people are into Africans, so thought I try and see whose got what. I've got the following: Leleupi, Aurora, Bumblebees, Auratus, Rainbows, Electric yellows, Dolphins, Ice blue zebras, Daffodils, Kenyi, Buffalos, Socolofi and Johanni.

Glad it worked out well and mum and fry are sweet. Always a problem when you don't know what the matter is. Never had that problem, but will know what to look for if it ever happens.
-
Sweet, I would certainly be interested if and when you have some for sale. Keep me in mind and let me know.

The one I got is the yellow one, I am after some more yellow ones. The ones I got of Paul bred once, but fry got eaten. Moved the colony to their own tank with my dolphins. See the male and female are busy cleaning a new cave, so might spawn again soon.

If is's waste pipe going to sewer plumbers do it, and the connection to sewer. Anything inside and under building is plumbing, sewer outside building is drainlaying.
-
I see, there might be a plumber near you who will be willing to do it as a "perk" job if it's not a major. Good luck, hope you find someone.
-
Why do you want a reg plumber, are you doing major work? I can give you advice if you need some. Most of the work you will be able to do yourself. I am a plumber and it's going to cost you heaps, even if you get someone to do it as a cash after hours job.

Does anyone know where I can get some young lemon cichlids. I have some, but want to get some from diffirent bloodline. I know they had some at World of water, but only had 3 and they sold before I got there. Someone supplied them locally, so there is someone out there breeding them. Thanks

Hi I bought a brine shrimp hatch n feeder and have it setup in one of my grow out tanks. I have 26 dolphin fry and the feeder is running for about a week. It really works a treat and they know where the shrimp exit and hang around and wait for a feed. It is really a time saving device and I did not think it will work this well. I have not seen them at any LFS and it is sold on trade me. Do anyone know if they available at any LFS?

Thanks guys. I'll have to do something to prevent it. Will talk to one of my sparky mates, might have a clever idea. Don't think it's the heat that got them, but oxygen. Luckily it was not my 5 ft cichlid tank. Ryan, those little ice blues are nearly double in size and going well, thanks for that.

Hi all Had to be in Te Awamutu for job interviews today, so left yesterday early afternoon to visit family and so I did not have to drive up early this morning. Got back this evening and went to fishroom to check on and feed my finned mates. Have a four foot devided and use it for breeding, all fish are floating belly up and those still moving is upside down. Water temp 37 degrees and heater going hard out. The thermometer stuck and not switching off. Saved on pair of rams, one eunotus male and my bristlenoses. Lost a pair of rams , 2 eunotus females and pair of cockatoos. The heater is only 6 months old and is not one of the cheapest on the market, should have stuck to the brands I know. To buy cheaper is buying expensive in this case.  Does anyone know if any of the heaters got a "fail safe" system in them. If it shut off automatically when it got to 30 degrees it would have prevented it and my fish would have been sweet, the heat from the other tanks will keep it at about 24 degrees with no heater.

Well done. :bounce: :bounce: My other pair spawned this morning and I'm going to follow your method and see if I have any luck. Moved pot with eggs into container and put airstone in pot to keep water moving. Thanks for the info, will keep you posted.
-
Looking good there. Mine are doing the same and had 7 batches and ate all. I got another female, she is younger and had eggs for a day before she ate them. I have since moved them to a breeding tank on their own and will take them away once I see the eggs. Good luck and hope you have better luck than me.
-
Happy to announce that she did not eat the eggs or fry and I stripped her this morning and got 26 healthy fry. They are safe in their own tank. :bounce: :bounce:
