Hello all, thought i would try my luck in the saltwater section. I am currently looking into setting up a sump for my freshwater setup mainly cause its cheaper than a canister filter and i can place any media in the baffles i am guessing so it would act just like a canister anyway. But my question is, is what i am thinking correct? or are sumps only useful for saltwater setups? all the information that i have found about sumps and overflow boxes etc are from saltwater sites. any help would be much appreciated. I also have posted some questions in the freshwater sections which have gone for several days unanswered as i am begening to wonder if sumps are a saltwater thing: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/making ... 17406.html

got another question 4) the pumps will heat the water, how does one ensure that it would not overheat? i once used a pump and a DIY coke bottle filter as a temp thing and it heated the water way over 30, needless to say the few (2-3) baby fish died but fortunately the apple snails survived. it could be that the pump i used was not efficient as it is rather an old one

Hello all, I am about to attempt making a sump for one of my tanks. The tank specs are 120cm 45cm 45cm so about 240L dry Questions that i have are: 1) what volume should the sump have is there a ratio ie 1 third the volume of the display tank? 2) what media do people use? and where does it get placed? within the refugim thingie? or within the baffles? 3) also the sump is for a cichlid tank where will be keeping bubbas before they move into the 7 1/2 footer. Is a canister filter a better option? just have all the bits i would need (acrylic, glues, pump etc) to do it for virtually nothing compared to buying a $300 filter I am sure i will think of more questions as i get under way making it

maybe you could get a bucket of water from one of your tank knowing what temp it is so that it is within the range of the heater. then place heater in bucket and turn knob right and left and see which way makes the light turn on and off, then the direction you turn it to prompt the red (heating now) light that will be the way to turn the temp up

thanks, yea she is in quarantine, melafix will now be purchased  have some other thing for infections etc... but it was the cheaper one on the shelf next to melafix, but no time to scimp on costs with her the way she is

Yeah ive seperated her into her own luxurious 30 litre tank till she gets better. The mouldy thing fell off when i moved her, but theres still a lil patch of exposed skin. So ill wait for that to heal up before moving her back. Thanks.

Hello, fish with the "disease" is a femal krib, it looks like there is a little patch of raw skin on her head of which white fluffy mould/fungus is growing out of In the same tank is a young black ghost knife, like clown loaches are ghost knifes sensitive to tonics and water treatments? am I best to try move her into an isolated tank? Thanks all

i think the way the MAF thing works is that if it is a species which was not present in NZ BEFORE 1997 or 6 then it is not allowed to be introduced into the country. Hence the species allowed list is meant to be representative of all things that were in country pre 97/6 but of course list is not complete so if you can prove it was here before then, then may be allowed to be added to list. or if they get special permit but thats huge dollars to get clearance for a new species But with this fishy if it has only been discovered it will have no hope getting in the coutry, other than through special permits i would imagine, like Koi's being kept at the zoo

As mentioned on my tank pictures ive got a 25gallon tank with 3kenyi, 3bumble bee, 4electric yellow bubbas and six apple snails. Woke up this morning to find that the apple snail had closed its trap door, and had half a bubba kenyi sticking out, anyway heres a pic, ive not posted pics before, i hope it works. I got the fishie out and at first thought was dead as no gill movement at all and after a couple seconds fishy started breathing, hes in a hatchery thing, and just below the gill area looks a lil squashed on one side but other than that seems to be doing fine for now http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img3268ml7.jpg ps. could only get url to work how would i get the pic to show in the post? Thanks

yea so ive heard =), ive got a male and a female, i think il let them be for now, and if or should i say when they spawn, il probably let them spawn only once, then do my best to seperate the males and the females, so that no more will occupy the tank, but would love them to spawn once. As they would be the first bubbas i would have.

yea, do need some fish, apart from the bottom feeders mentioned theres two parot fish, couple convicts, clown loaches and a yellow (with black and white stripes at top) cichlid, and a large redtail shark
-
The apple snails are not that they range from bout 4-6cm wide, just that the fishies are real small. Want the big tank to be a malawi tank, but will stock it slowly so it doesnt take all my moola away at once

i got a bit from taupo over the weekend got, apparantly if you set them in boiling water and then cold water it helps absorb water then they sink. So anyone know if its safe to put pumice in the tank? Thanks
-
Hello, ive got the new big tank close to set up just wondering in terms of hiding spotes etc... can pumice be used? What other things can be used? its 2.5m long so not too keen paying for rocks from garden centres (at this stage anyway)

Went to Pet Corner in porirua, Animats, and The Pet House in paraparam today unfortunately by the time i got to animalz in mirimar they were closed. Didnt see anything too interesting, The Pet House had some cool marine fish, and yesterday went to hutt pet centre and they had a raphael catfish. Do you guys usually get fish ordered in? As I have not all that often seen stand out fish at the petstores. Animates told me that they dont stock many things as they are a bit harder to sell especially with the higher prices, but that they can usually order them in
