Hi I'm surprised that your goldie is chewing on your minnow's tail. He must be hungry! I have minnows living happily with 8-10cm goldfish in an outdoor pond. Hope your fish survives! G

They are Gold Barbs. I have heard that they tend to spawn in conjunction with the lunar cycle. Also, that the male may change colour slightly. Has anyone witnessed this? Cheers

Hi guys Whilst it seems that my goldfish have finished spawning, I noticed today that my Barbs are behaving strangely. They always seem to 'glance' a lot, but today two of them have paired and alternate between being mouth-to-mouth, to mouth-to-$%^& very quickly, back and forth, on and on. Does anyone know if this is typical breeding behaviour for them? Thanks in advance PS: If they are, do they need any special attention?

Hi Stella Yes it was me. Sorry it has taken so long to post a pic of the pond. I still have the one Inanga, he is as long as the biggest comet you can see and is the coolest fish in the pond. We call him Slim Shady He is very hard to photograph, but hopefully I will catch him unaware one day soon

Hi guys Because i always like looking at other people's ponds, I thought I should throw up a few of my own. The pond is rather busy at the moment with about 20 baby goldfish. Thankfully they move to a new home next week. In addition to the baby goldfish there are also their parents, 3 barbs, half a dozen mountain minnows and and Inanga.

Hey all Thanks for your replies. I will try the store in Albany, or maybe find my gumboots and torch. Stella, I moved house, and hence ponds. The new pond has a waterfall and when I ran it, everything tried to get upstream. Even the goldfish. I guess my Inanga was better at jumping than the rest, but misjudged his leap! I have also witnessed Inanga jumping clear of the water to catch bugs hovering over the surface of the pond. Maybe that is what the ones you hear are doing? Cheers

Despite it being claimed that Inanga wont escape, they will! They are very good at leaping from the water. Hence, I am looking to replace one that leapt from my pond. Jansen told me the only native fish supplier has shut shop. For anyone considering inanga for an outside pond, apart from being difficult to see, they seem to handle it pretty well and get on fine with gold fish, Minnows and barbs. Best of all, they have 'attitude'. Please let me know if you are in Auckland and have a spare! Cheers

Hi. In Auckland I have happily had comets, shubunkins, White cloud Mountain Minnows, Danios and inanga all live outside. on yeah, Gold Barbs too. Sword Tails couldn't handle winter sadly.

Thanks for all your condolences! Sadly, I can now add Apple Snails to the list of 'don't like auckland's winter critters.' Happily my Goldfish are all well and have started their 'spring' activities. My Enunga, Danios, Mountain Minows and Red Barbs got through winter too. Phew! For anyone who has an outdoor pond and hasn't had enunga, I can highly recommend them! They have a really cool 'attitude'. The only problems I have had is that they get very stressed at the pet store and don't always survive the transition to the pond. They can also jump quite high and escape if the pond gets too full from rain. The only store I have seen them sold @ is Jansens. Oh yeah, I think they live only a couple of years and can grow to 10cm Has anyone had success with other fish, outside, over Winter? G

Hi If you were wondering if Swordtails can happily live in outdoor ponds in Auckland - they can't! It seems the cold has killed both of mine this week

Alan 104, you were right. I found some pics to compare them to. I checked on the egg sack today and it has vanished. Hopefully that means they have hatched! x matt x thanks for the photobucket tip!

Hi fishy-folk Can anyone help identify some eggs? They have appeared on the side of a filter case in an outdoor pond, at a depth of around 80cm. The oval egg casing is about 10mm long. When viewed with the naked eye, the eggs look reflective and have holographic/pearlshell qualities. As far as I am aware, I only have apple snails in the pond, although I did have a number of ramshorn snails which haven't been seen for some time. I understand the apple snails lay a pink clutch of egges above the water line. Oh, I see I can't post images here. Doh! Well, maybe if anyone feels they may be able to assist they could let me know and I could email pics of the eggs Any clues? :-?

Hey people. I got 4 apple snails - Huey, Duey, Louey & Stuey, presumably Pomacea in November 2005 and put them in my outdoor pond in Auckland. There, they have been happy all summer, mostly eating red plum leaves that fall in the pond. They have grown, but are still more like golf than tennis balls. My question is... knowing that the temperature of the pond is dropping quite quickly now, am I at risk of losing them to hypothermia? I've thought of sending them on vacation to a friend's indoor tanks, but hearing how large their apetite can be in warmer water, I wouldn't like to impose. I guess another option would be to try and warm the water a little. The pond is about 80 gal and 10 metres from the nearest power supply. Any ideas? Thanks in advance .....
