I did think it was overstocked

I did the same but only for three days the fish just appeared a little washed out. THey were fine after a some food.

Im heading to CHCH next weekend and have about half a day spare that the folks promised we can go to some LFS' so which are the best to visit. I have heard Organism and Redwood are good are there any others

polysperma is good for decent light
perhaps even rotala idica or roundifolia if you have decent light
Hairgrass is cosmoploitian according to aquahobby and i think that means worldwide

no you dont need air pumps for airation if your flow in the tank is decent.
A filters generally are set up to inlet from the bottom and outlet at the top and this is gennerally suffficient.

use a proper glass cleaner on the glass. otherwise it leaves you with those marks

I think we commonly call it Black Beards algae.
I had a problem with it a few moths back I found Flourish excell really helped with it. It does dent your pocket though. This then planting more plants once the algae wouldnt demolish them helped a lot, You may not have room for more plants.

Also Corys in a deep tank can be a nightmare :roll:
