  1. awesome inspiration - am setting up a 380 for my little madam's 5th birthday
  2. i'm thinking sump with mechanical then into bioballs/noodles kinda thang - HFF just down the road from me so would be heading that way - am liking their tri-line barbs veryily muchly
  3. wickid stuff chasps, still arent sure lol amazon for fx5????? (ifn you have a us power supply???) been reading bout co2 reactors, i wondering if you put it inline on the return from the sump if this minimise a bit of co2 lost through turnover? has anyone use/experimented with the calfo setups/overflows? sucjh as http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx
  4. uh huh, have my unfinished project in the garage which is a 3 footer that i had a sump for and was entertaining the idea of using the 3 footer to expand that sump into a bigger sump for the 5 footer. I ALWAYS over engineer, i can't help myself, its a condition that needs treatment lol........ where the 5 footers going to go isnt an issue for water changes/access to water etc looks like the 3 footer/sump and cabinet might just find its way out to the curb, @ least DDW will be happy-ish bugger, just thought theres a eheim 1260 sitting there too, that won't get the hoof lol
  5. the lost of co2 is.......................... a.) minimal b.) manageable c.)who caresable?
  6. hi chasps just getting new project together, a 5 foot FW tank (approx 365litres) and wondering about current thinking on whether to use a sump or not (have read both opinions) in a semi planted tank? i would be installing a co2 system at some stage, i love the idea of building my own filter system, i would prefer it over a store brought canister (probably a fx5), i know it'll probably cost more etc but I would have made it lol just seen the calfo systems, coooooooooooooooooooooooool anyway, just bouncing the idea out there to be laffed at lol cheers
  7. ........... exacery where i was coming from
  8. cheers guys, all good info and more food for brain, i think another visit to albany mico plumbing is called for
  9. how about tank protector sleeve that go over a dive cylinder????
  10. has anybody used/have comments regarding the use of snap-lock garden hose fittings for aquarium plumbing???? i'm meaning similar to the nylex range or the neta brand brass fittings, they do some good looking manifolds(?) where you can split 1 tap off into 3 hose runs each with an adjustable flow valve on it.......... generally 20mm threads but i think they use a 12mm hose (inside diametre) was mainly wondering bout pressures, leaks etc - i though it was a great idea the other night when it came to me but cos of the risk of leaks i am thing more towards the hansen range of fittings
  11. to fit my 3 foot light (al-30D) into my hood i need to reduce its height (and i thought it would keep heat down) - has anybody ever done this? i'm thinking stripping out electrical guts/switches from light unit and moving them out of the hood, rewiring etc) any dramas/pitfalls that anyone can see? obviously need to get a sparkie to sign off on it at the end of day, how bout remote ballast lamps anyhows, are they available? price? where? cheers guys
  12. hey yawl, long time lurker (possibly) first time poster, am currently getting gear together to overhaul a hollywood farms rimu cabinet and 3 foot (170-ish litre) aquarium and wanted to know reccommended sizes (diameter) piping to use (marley??) very much like the idea of using the skimmerless overflow system into a weir (lee's specimen container - cheers michael) then out through a durso standpipe set up, reducing down in diameter and then into the sump, return path through a eheim 1250 and back to main tank through a fluval output nozzel (have been toying with the idea of a spring loaded non return valve in here to prevent back siphon in case of power issues) - will plumb in on return line a return to the sump and a "upgrade line?" in case i want to add in anything later, hmmmmmmmmmm guess i should do a branch for water changes too, getting bigger than ben hur) 32mm seemed a little large for the durso pipe to me, i was wondering about a 25mm pipe reducing down to a 20mm for the flow into the sump and i guess the fluval nozzel will dictate diameter for return path?? i had though of using a dual pick-up out of the tank, top and bottom (my thinking that the top pickup could be placed at a height to break the siphon in case of power issues) thought off two strainers on one line (like an upsidedown capital F) using the skimmerless overflow i kinda thought that a valve in the "to sump" line wouldn't be an issue with blockages etc, especially using the strainers i've spotted at bunnings yesterday, and this valve would help set height in the weir (hang on back) http://bellsouthpwp.net/b/u/bullman7/overflow.htm cheers, should get off my ar** and draw a schematic to explain a bit easier,
  13. cutting to the chase, is it ok to use steam distilled water in your aquarium?
  14. aaaaaaaaaah the feeder tank? was really going to show my ignorance and ask about nymphs (basically = effed up fish???) <---- in layman terms that is
  15. was just cruising the mall yesterday, looking at fish, as you do and spied some black moors for sale, but a couple of them had a caudal fin like a comet (single) instead of a split tail........... what gives? is this a breeding stuff up? is it common? does it make the swim quicker (i.e. more competitive?)
  16. yeah, had tried plants before in the little tank but they ate em, hence the plastic fantastics, i put a lot of that down to water quality (it was clear but never done any tests so would hate to think - as i sqay, was overcrowded) i think the marinised peace lily is pretty hardy against goldies, quiet waxy and they don't like em?(most of the time - they were my 2nd attempt at plants, hell i could go tropical, i do have all the kit for it lol
  17. my understanding regard the koura is its ok to keep them, not allowed to breed or monetiary gain from them, don't quote me on that one though tank dimensions = 910mmL * 380mmD * 500mmH = 173 litres according to the ehiem site, i think thats filled to the brim though so can knock some off, re the filters, i was running one on my ar38 in an attempt to help keep the water condition in check cos i was overcrowded and too soft to "let soe fish go" and the other one came with the new/2nd hand aquarium
  18. hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster (cos i want something) finally found a larger aquarium (hollywood fish farm 165 ltr and rimu stand/hood) that i liked enough (trademe) and one that met the wifes standards for going in the lounge, am slow time getting it sorted in my head what i want to do and have a few questions in my head............ 1. the wood unit looks a little tired and i thought before commissioning the new aquaria i would re-stain/oil it. i thought scuff it back with a scotchbrite or p400 (fine as) sand paper and apply wood oil? (like re-doing a dining room table) ............... comments? aren't sure what hollywood finish their aquariums with. 2. currently just have a couple of comets running around in a ar380 so probably stay with goldfish (i like em lol) i read in a barron's goldfish book that fantails can hold their own with comets/shubunkins feeding wise? comments? i am thinking my new aquarium is too much for 2 comets alone lol, was going to add in a mix of comets/shubunkins and a few fantails (keep an eye on them, add them in slow time etc).......... 3. main reason for staying coldwater... is last year at mti we had a koura in with some natives, soooooo cool, i want one!!! any info on how they'd go with the goldies would be cool.... comments/ideas on accomodation for it? we just had an old piece of pvc downpipe but i would like something a little flasher............ 4. cos of the koura wishlist i thought i'd try and do it right from start and go planted tank/drift wood, not my current plastic fantastics, substrate??? laterite/flourite??? where to get it? cost? 5. suggested plant list? running 2x eheim 2213 for filtration and one day hopefully head to a sump? wait and see on that, adrian and kim @ mti created a monster in me lol my closest fish stores (and my preference) is pupuke and drop in now and then to jansens on porana road not asking for much i realise  cheers in advance for any comments
  19. cheers on the congrat :-) , yup to gravel vac, every time i change water i use that, that was the main plan also, just keep on changing water, been a couple of days now and they haven't died so am over the initial panic, and just adding a tablespoon of tonic salt as well, seems ok so far and it is clearing up
  20. went on holidaze to get married, had disolving feeder block to feed the 4 most expensive comets in the world, during the period my new ma in law done me a favour by feeding my pride n joys as well, so i came home to an aquarium (alpha 1, ar380) with finrot and now 2 fish are display reddish gin blossoms/varigus(?) veins i am doing twice weekly water changes (bout 8 litres) and a table spoon of tonic salt at water changes, was wondering what to use to treat the septicemia??? furan 2???? oh, great site/forum , a wealth of knowledge in here, now just to read it, cheers chasps and chaspettes
