  1. I think adding the puffers into the small tank would be ok (depending on how many puffers you were adding and how big the tank is) it has been cycled so should be ok. Usual story though feed them very lightly for a few weeks just to allow things to settle. Also bear in mind that the bacteria that cycles a tank only lives where there is ammonia to break down (ie where it has food) so if you transferred media to a filter on an empty tank it will die off..
  2. Yep I suggested it too it did not go down well... I got the whole go on trademe if you want to buy other things this is a fish forum so only fish stuff will be sold on here.. Maybe if there was a section to advertise if you wanted to sell or even buy something like a car cell phone, puppies, birds or anything really we have access to a large generally "honest" group of people here and I think it would work out well... I mean if people are allowed to do it then why not create a section and encourage it..
  3. lol dare I suggest a "non-aquatic items for sale" section again seems as it is actually happening now
  4. Some people call Ps. Socolofi powder blues some call Metriaclima callainos (sometimes called cobalts) powder blues it is all a common name and means nothing.. The fish closely resembles a socolofi to me too, unsure if it is pure and it is very hard to tell.. Good buy though!
  5. No worries I hope you can find the fish you are after. I am sure firenz can help he will post when he sees this.. The photo is of my male Sc. Fryeri from my breeding colony
  6. Hi and welcome Omar There are a few of us keeping peacocks here possibly not the variety or quality you are used to but we try our best. Where abouts in the country are you locate (assuming you are in NZ).
  7. Some air pumps are just noisy I forget which ones are best as I now run a compressor in my fishroom but I am sure others can help, sometimes foam can help or adjusting the output of it a bit.. That grill sounds like the grill that is usually on the top tray, I think it is to stop the media getting sucked into the pump, as stuff like filter wool can tear off in strands and block the impeller..
  8. There is plenty of discussion on here about stripping or transferring the fish and letting them spit naturally if you use the search function and search for holding or stripping or something like that you fill find tons of info that we end up typing over and over again lol
  9. Yellows/peacocks and demasoni should all breed ok in the same tank there is a minimal risk of creating hybrids (assuming you only have one type of peacock in that that is). As livingart has mentioned demasoni are colony forming fish and you should ideally start out with 12 fish or 1m and 6-7females as the males are very hard on the girls and other males as well. To have a higher chance of the females lasting you should also have 2+females per male yellow and peacock as well. The best food is a variety as livingart has suggested but lean more towards a vege type diet for the demasoni as they are vegetarians by nature. So get some spirulina flake, some good quality normal flake and maybe some pellet based food and just mix it up. They will also do well on homemade frozen foods or jus cocktail shrimp blended up for a special treat.
  10. If you run on the heavier side of stocking they can be a good idea I had a heavily stocked tank I used the spray bar above the water on and it fell in, I came home to some almost dead gasping fish.. Now I have airstones or 2 filters in most tanks just in case something goes wrong with the filter.
  11. It is very common for the water to back siphon down airline hoses when a pump fails or is turned off... Most people use check valves (should be able to get these for 50c-$1 at your LFS) and/or always position their airpumps above the level of the water just in case the pump fails.. Unfortunately it is one of those things when you start out that you don't think about unless someone tells you or it happens to you
  12. Are they guarding eggs? Or acting like they are breeding? Is the affected fish breathing any heavier?
  13. Something like this? http://fishkeepers.co.nz/forums/viewtop ... =50&t=1766 Supasi is the one to talk to about it
  14. lol anyone else think that it is stupid they called it the CF1200 when that used to relate to a filter that did 1200LPH but this one does 1500LPH, why not call it the CF1500? Just my 2c worth Js did you get the filter running? The easiest way to do it is to put the filter below the tank level setup the inlet pipe in the tank and then suck on the outlet tap to establish a siphon through the filter, place the outlet into a bucket until water flows freely, close the taps place the outlet in the tank where you want it, plug it and open the taps again it should be going If it doesn't go just lean the filter over (towards the outlet side) and it should start then you can gradually lower it as it clears the air out.
  15. Sending a pm to someone will defeat the purpose of the forums.. It is best to have all the info out there so others can read and learn from it if all info was given by pm then noone would learn, if mysticvampyre knows alot about fish she will share her wisdom for all to learn from her Sounds like you are doing everything right At a guess I would say that you have 10 fish in a 400L tank so it is likely that the amount of ammonia they will produce on light feeding with established plants in the tank would be almost undetectable and the tank should be ticking along cycling nicely the presence of nitrates shows that has been happening.
  16. I would just put them all in a drain pipe and have them all draining and one end.. Goto the warehouse and buy a roll of the black irrigation piping and you can also buy little adjustable plastic valves that screw straight into it, they are cheap as you just punch a whole where you want one and screw it in then your away. That way it wouldn't be much work to have fresh water going into each tank and that is probably the best option anyway. This is how most people with big fishrooms have their air plumbed in and it works really well but works the same with water
  17. There is probably all sorts you can stick with them especially with the varied diet you give them.. Alot of people don't recommend sticking fish that aren't vegos with them but since you feed yours meat you have heaps of options.. Some nice jullies to hang out at the bottom of the tank would be cool, as would some comps/calvus but they aren't cheap at the moment.
  18. I don't think they are really classified as shellies although there is a dwarf form of shell dwelling comps on the shell dwellers list here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/c ... php?cat=14 The rest of the altos (and the ones we have here) are here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/c ... php?cat=12 classified with the neolamps and others like that.
  19. That is exactly what I have been thinking, this stuff sounds awfully nasty to be supplied in 200L amounts and diluted down 50:1 and washed down drains?
  20. Unfortunately I only have he Jullie malieri I am hoping to get a few more tang species this year so will see what happens.. Apart from the ornatus (although I have heard of a few with these) and the trets you should be able to find the rest. Masked Jullie is sometimes transcriptus and can be maleri just depends what random thing the importers have been sent when they get them in We have no species of shellies allowed in NZ.
  21. Excuse the spelling I can't be bothered looking all the correct names up Frontosa Jullie - Ornatus, Marlieri, Transcriptus Lelupi Tropheus various species Alto. Comp and Calvus 5 bar trets (and maybe 6 bars) were here but haven't seen or heard of any for a while. There is bound to be a few more but that is all I can think of off the top of my head.
  22. lol both not stupid ideas Although I am sure alot of people just clean out and use these drums all the time..
  23. I just have them in a 30 x 30 x 30cm tank unheated in the fishroom, they eat anything and so far seem undemanding? The guy I got them off has had them for ages with no problems and bred them previously too. I think it maybe like all fish sometimes bad batches come in, and also these guys are a new discovery so all fish would be fairly close to wild so maybe they don't thrive as much if they are just thrown into a tank with different water parameters (I researched and replicated their wild conditions) and bigger fish that would chase them around all day? I have seen alot of spawning type activity from them but I am going away so cannot do it properly just loaded the tank up with moss and hope some fry survive.
