  1. Thanx Billaney, from what I've read the adults get up to 16.5 cm and are resonalby peacefull for cichlids. From my observation they are strictly bottom dwellers and love to move the tanks substrate around when breeding. Gidday Alan, the picture of the fry was about 2 days after they hatched. once the egg yolk transformed into a stomach and they were free swimming I started feeding them. I also read up in another post that you recomended putting a snail in with the fry to clean up the scraps, I threw in a rams horn snail and hes keeping it pretty clean, Thanks Hey alanmin4304, the only cichlids I have succesfully raised without there parents were Convicts. I guess that they gave me some experience before trying other species. It's great watching them grow from eggs to fish, definatly my favorite part of fish keeping Thanx Monaro1 I also have a question About Green Severums.. can green severums carry the Gold severum gene like convicts carry a gold? and produce a % of gold as well as green? Thanks, -Tom
  2. I purchased a pair of Hypsophrys nicaraguensis about a month ago, maybe longer. The two are inseperable and always swimming side by side and digging together. A few weeks back I decided to move the couple to a larger tank hoping that they would breed once they have settled in and dug there pits.. Well once I had moved them and was about to empty there previous tank I noticed hundreds of eggs burried in the gravel. I placed the female back but started to eat some eggs as she would have gotten spooked so I returned her to the larger tank. Instead of waiting weeks or months for them to lay eggs again I decided to try and save some eggs and try raise them myself. After about 5 days more or less, the eggs became wrigglers. They are now free swimming for just over a week and developing well. In my opinion they are beautiful fish and havent come accross many for sale. Here are some pics I took recently.. Comments welcome. -Tom
  3. wow lol and I cant even get rid of my male for free
  4. Hey Alan, I actually questioned the price because I was unsure. The worker said " yep thats the price" so I took them all, there were only 3. A few weeks later I asked another guy there and he said they just didnt sell :-? They were about 5-6cm and I got them from Jansens Silverdale in the cichlid tank up high where they keep the Green sevrums. When I bought them they were a dull tan with a diagonal stripe and after about a month or so 2 of them had paired up and started developing some nice coloration. The male is significantly larger than the female. The pair seem to be very well bonded and always swim side by side. Unfortunatly I havent had anyluck breeding them.
  5. Lol, my bad  Ok from the top.. Tiger oscar( sex unknown), Male convict Cichlid, Male Festive cichlid, Female Green Severum, Chocolate Cichlid (I think its a male but not quite sure) and a young red oscar on the left of it. I picked 3 of those festive Cichlids up for $1 each at the petshop I thought it was a mistake. Are they not very popular or somthing? :bounce: -Tom

    Gidday!

Thanks all, I have been keeping the crans bully for over 3 years now and its become very tame, it was about 5cm when I caught it in the stream, there were millions at the time. The tank is about 50 liters, 600x300x300mm Its on the small side to be honest but I will upgrade one day. I will try to find some pics later. It will eat anything that sinks but I feed it shrimp pellets, peeled shrimp, and some raw lemon fish when i have it + any small snails in the tank. It also enjoys earthworms I do frequent water changes using tank water with with a neutral pH. -Tom
  7. Thanks guys, I dont name all of my fish but the tiger oscar is called Archy and the chocolate cichlid is called cadbury
  8. Hey, I'm new to these forums so I decided to share some pics of my cichlids.. I resized the pictures for those who are on Dialup like myself -Tom
