  1. I had a filter I hadn't used for years do similar. While holding the main body of the impeller I found the blades spun freely. I put a drop of superglue on it... and away it went.
  2. At work and didn't have time to check if this had been suggested before but... If you live in the cold, dark and damp bush, like I do, you could mount a dehumidifier up high somewhere and drain that into the system. I seem to empty mine every other day. It must hold 5 - 10 ltrs when full Just a thought. Also this here might be a good read.
  3. Mine arrived yesterday. Weekend read sorted. Thanks Caryl
  4. Wonder how many people here have watched their cats terrorize a mouse. Least it was fairly quick...
  5. Hi Jono, I went through this exercise a month or two back. We have a BOC just down the road from work so wandered down there one lunch time. Explained what I was after to a helpful bloke in the office. He reckoned to achieve a one bubble per second rate of flow, that I would need a regulator that was gonna cost about $1k and they only rent out the bottles. I found a CO2 regulator with a flow meter on TradeMe for $90 brand new, from a welding supply outfit up here in Auckland. I printed out the pic and took it across the road to Actron Fire Services. Very helpful guy here reckoned it could be done with a fire extinguisher. Biggest problem for him was getting the valve for the bottle as fire extinguishers don't have valves, just a trigger. Anyway, he found one for me, attached it to an aluminium 2.5kg bottle, filled and tested it for me, all for $100. I attached the reg, tested it and got the flow down to one bubble every three seconds. Now just need to make the reactor/diffuser... Good luck with it, PM me if you want any more details. Mason
  6. Hi Caryl. Called into home for the first time in a week, thought I should check the mail. Got my first copy of AW. Excellent read and nice to be able to put a few faces to names. Mason
  7. Thanks for the offer B&K and the links Zev. Think he's gonna pump it out to give it bit of a clean up, so will catch it then.
  8. Ha ha Beachy, you can't have your old one back. Tanks looking great. Yours that is, still working on mine. Mason
  9. Hey Zev. Not sure how big it is, I haven't seen it. He's tried nets and food, but no success. We discussed a bait catcher, but I haven't seen one for years, I must be looking in the wrong place. Alan, he filed the barb off a tiny hook, even made a cork float, still no luck. LOL, like most fishing trips. Hey Alan, I wouldn't mind joining up with the NZKA, should I just PM you my contact details? Cheers Mason
  10. My parents live in a rural area just out of Auckland. A few years back my father decided to dig a goldfish pond in his front yard. The front yard slopes down to a swamp/stream. There are various species of fish life, including wild goldfish of which he has caught a few and put in with the regulars. They are very dark silver/black, same size and shape, hang out with the other goldfish and, according to my farther, gradually change colour back to the gold we all know. He pumps water from this stream to water the garden and irrigate the lawn when it's to dry. Through some clever plumbing this pump also feeds the pond. Water changes are done from the creek via a 44gallon plastic drum filter under the deck and the pond water can be circulated through the filter also. The filter feeds a small pool at the top with a waterfall down to the first pond, which overflows down to a second pond. The water was originally drawn from the second pond for circulation, but he found that by the time the water had filled the tubing, the filter, top pool, waterfall and so on, the level would drop to about half. Out with the spade again to dig an under ground holding tank from where the water can be drawn without affecting the water level of the second pond. The second pond overflows into this tank through a meshed grate which catches the leaves and rubbish from the trees around it. When I say underground, it has a large wooden lid, covered with bark and is planted. It does have a small inspection cover which he removed for the first time since he can't remember when, only to see a goldfish swim by. He’s currently investigating ways of catching the poor bugger.

    Hi Folks

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Have been in touch with beachy and will look at his setup tonight. I hear ya monaro1, theres a couple of beaten up 3 footers under my parents house. Might drag them out this weekend for a look. uh-oh, it's started...
  13. I bought a Canon EOS 300D kit, unfortunatly just before the 350D was released. To me being able to shoot in the RAW file format is important. I'm real pleased with it. A friend got the 20D but had to wait for her lenses to arrive so had the same rubbish lens I got with the kit. She got me to do some work on some of her files and they looked worse than I was getting off my 300D. It's all about the lenses... Just need to get a tank and some fish etc, then it's time to start saving again for a new lens.

    Hi Folks

Been lurking around here for a while now, so thought it about time I said hello. Haven't kept fish for years, but decided to get back amongst it. I have no idea what I want to do yet, I keep changing my mind. I read someones post about something, get thinking and before ya know it, a new plan. Anyway the current plan is a 5ft tank full of Boeseman's Rainbowfish. Just have to find the tank now, might be time to talk to Beachy. Later FD
