Hi Showtime, If you find that mixture doesn't last to long, adjust the yeast and sugar amounts. I use 2/3 cup sugar and just under 1/2 teaspoon of yeast. make sure you give it a real good shake up to get it started. Good luck...

400+ species - aquarium plants [NEW ORDER]
stagger lee replied to Plantman's topic in Aquatic Plants
Hi Henry, Sorry i haven't replied sooner but have been very busy and away from the forums lately. Arghh, i am not going to be able to afford it in the next few weeks - moving house for the 2nd time in as many months! Take me off the list, and sorry again SL -
You can also get it from Stone & Water World on Marua Rd - much cheaper and where hollywood gets it from i think
-
Yep, Java moss and java fern... and put a couple of sneaky plastics in there too and no one will be any wiser...

Super fine gravel, 0.8 - 1.4mm coffee grit
stagger lee replied to green & blue's topic in Freshwater
Hi green and blue, i use something very similar called charcoal grit in my planted tank and have not had any probs. It's cheap and i mix it with slightly bigger sized smooth gravel for a kinda natural river bottom look. it's dark grey when dry and black when wet. I use a substrate additive in the bottom 1/3. i get it all from Stone and Water World on Marua rd. -

Hi Sharn, once you get that light business sorted your plants should grow great. A tank full of beautiful plants is the best look IMHO. I am always dilemmering about how much light to put on my tank, i keep thinking i need to add another tube or 2 but never seem to get round to it... my plants grow good, just can't get those pretty red ones... But i need to replace my 4 ft tubes (which a friend gave me). i have the whole K thing & CRI thing sorted out (in theory). But in practise it doesn't seem that easy. Can someone reccomend me a brand from Mastertrade? Last time i went in there to get tubes for my 2 ft it got a bit confusing for me and the sales guy. Not all tubes have the K rating on them... They ended up ordering me some sylvania gro lux ones but they have a real pinky purple colour to them... Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated

I just have to say that i find this all really frustrating! I have double dosed with Flourish excel to try to get rid of BBA and it has never worked! I initially was using it for plant growth and when the BBA arrived i doubled and then even tripled dosed and nothing has made a difference. I have moved house, got rid of all the worst effected plants and have changed the substrate to something more nutrient rich. I was adding fertilizer to the water but do not plan to now i have a good substrate. Hopefully this will help combined with the right CO2 and lighting I agree with Plantman, balance is the trick Blue and Kim i am really sorry to hear about your fish, i love syno's especially. BBA is the bane of my exsistance

Amen to that Kim and Dan! Thanks Alan, will give it a go tomorrow

i once tried to catch my khuli loaches to move them to another tank - but that proved impossible! Even with 3 nets and 2 pairs of hands (flatmate). I am moving house this weekend and figure i won't even try to catch them until all the plants etc have been uprooted and there is just gravel in there!

Hi Peteypleco, As far as collecting fishes on the shore, i saw some in Jansens the other week... No seriously, when i was at Long Bay yesterday there were heaps of what looked like Inanga in the stream there. It was low tide and they were in the shallow water right on the beach... Actually, they could have been Smelt now i look at that link again. No, Inanga maybe...

Hi Skate i also have an aquaone 34 ltr tank. This is just a small one for my office, and i have bigger tanks at home. I found it more difficult to set this one up than the others, you have to be so much more precise when doing things! But it's all good now and i am sure yours will be looking good in no time

He's not rare but he is unusual!
stagger lee replied to stagger lee's topic in Rare and unusual fish
Ok... Mystic: thanks for comments. Anthony: don't worry, i never intended to breed him Alan: if you knew me you would understand that seeing an animal of any kind in pain or suffering is something i just cannot handle. I would never keep something alive for 'novelty value'. And "flush" is just a turn of phrase. So i suppose we will have to agree to disagree on this one! Oh, and he was given to me by a friend who hatched him, but he in no way considers himself a breeder. Just a guy who hatched some eggs once. EK69: cheers for your positive attitude. SL -

Hi Alan, thanks for your offer but i think i'll keep him. With all respect i have to disagree with you as far as him being "of absolutely no use". He has as much as a right to live as my other 'normal' killi. Until i see signs of his quality of life being impaired i don't see why he should get the flush. SL -
Hi starlyte, When i put my red tailed shark in with the flying foxes, they didn't get along at all. William (RTS) started chasing them alot and they never settled, and my tank is 4 ft with lots of hiding places. I am pretty sure because they have a simliar body shape Wil sees them more as a threat. I read it on the net so it might be true  Anyway now William has his own tank...

Thanks heaps for fixing that up Mystic Alan: i wasn't planning on using him to breed. He probably wouldn't have much of a way with ladies looking like that anyway  Lynda: he gets around really good. We will see how he goes as he grows... -

Hi people, Don't hate him coz he's ugly! He is not old, he is infact still growing. A friend gave me a couple of killis (both males) just befor xmas. He happily swims around, has a big appetite and is doing just as well as his brother in another tank. If you were to imagine him staightened out, could anyone tell me what type of killi he is? He has bluey green on his body as well as the yellow colouring you can see in the photo. Cheers -
Hi Rory, I don't reckon you should get neons, instead get some cardinal tetras. They cost a little extra but will look awesome with your black gravel and slate and some nice bright green plants. Good luck

I would suggest a 'black line flying fox' - i know that is probably not their proper name but that is what i have seen them called in most LFS here. They have that cool 'fluttering' movement and are silver with a black line running down their side from nose to tip of tail. I have 2 and they are very playful too... IMHO Ottos are the most effective algae eaters but are small so might become food for you knife fish!
