thanks for the link. they've been in the tank a few hours now but still a little shy. i'll try and suss out what sex they are when they come out from behind the plants. so there are 2 different breeds of silver dollars is that right?

There a quite a few different species but only a couple in NZ i think.

These are the ones we can get.

Metynnis hypsauchen Silver dollar

Metynnis maculatus Spotted metynnis

Myloplus rubripinnis Redhook myleus

Mylossoma aureum Silver dollar

Hmmm a phrase i just found on www.fishbase.org about M. Argenteus.

but might be a misidentification of M. hypsauchen

The hypsauchen/Argenteus are the most common ones

thanks for the pics, very useful! i think they are Metynnis hypsauchen. I did a google image search and they seemed the most similar and look like these guys:

i have taken some photos of them but have no idea how to post a pic!

yes we have lots of plants, the silver dollars are nibbling away on one plant that grows very quickly (i'm not sure of its name but we end up throwing handfuls of it out every couple of weeks) which is good

:D

Also, the Metynnis maculatus are awesome! If bloody silver dollars didn't get so big I'd love to have some of those and the Myloplus rubripinnis or Mylossoma aureum

so i have the smaller ones? they are very small at the moment but i'm expecting them to grow and grow and grow!

i'll have to work on my picture uploading technique! thanks for the advice!
