quack
hey, i was just reading an old post about running canister filters in series. i have two aqua one filters cf500 and cf700. would it be possible to do this with these filters as the flow rates are different? i want to run the cf500 fill of filter wool and use the cf700 fill of bio media. i would have the water flowing into the cf500 then to the cf700 and then back to the tank. would this work and would it be better than having the two filters set up seperatly? they are running on a 230l tank fill of african cichilds. also what kind of bio media does people recomened. ive been using some of the jbl ball things, called biomec or something. any help would be good thanks
herefishiefishie
I would run them seperately. Ok so you will have to clean the one with filter material more often, the other one would hardly ever need a clean at all. I would add a layer of coarse foam to the bio media one just to catch particles that may get caught in the propeller. As for media, well matrix, purigen, calcium carbonate or similar, rough ceramic noodles, these seem better to the smooth ones. I tend not to use filter wool, clogs up to easy, & the water ends up running around the edges of the material. I tend to use a couple of different types of foam sheets. Coarse & not so coarse. That is why I tend to use the cannister as bio load with coarse foam{which the bacteria grows on too} & use an internal with finer foam to collect all the smaller particles. quack
so do you think that i should run them seperatly, but have one as the bio with a small amount of machanical and one as the machanical? or should i keep them both as mainly bio and get a hang on filter or something similer and fill that with a machanical media i have purgen, but i cant get matix down here in nelson i havnt had any problems with what im using so ill stick with that i spose. what about bio balls (the plastic ones) are they any good? the filters came with some in them and ive just left them in there. should i keep them or replace them with something different. quack
hey still looking to hear other peoples opinoins about this. what would be the best setup for these two filters?
SpidersWeb
Run them seperately. You will get higher water flow, and the multiple intakes will provide for better water collection. Running them in series means you get more media capacity, but this is kind of pointless IMHO because if its THAT big a deal just clean the filter more often. You could use the CF500 for things like coral sand (since they're africans), maybe carbon, lots of wool, and clean it monthly leaving the 700 alone. If you need more media capacity, but dont want any more water flow, then use them in series and yes you can do that. Personally I'd just buy a bigger filter.
