ljtan55
*Sigh* I was removing the babies out of the community tank to give them a fighting chance with a hose, and the parents got SUCKED up! One after the other, the male got really stuck and I had to flush him up with warm water!! Anyways panic panic I really really dun wanna lose the breeding pair of rams. They're looking fine in the baby tank now, the top fins are flattened and they've lost a couple of scales, and I'm worried they'll get a secondary infection. I've put in some stress coat, and I'm thinking about getting melafix tomorrow but I'm worried about the babies not reacting to it. Behaviour wise they're great, picking up the babies scattered all over the place, but I'm worried they'll get sick later. Any advice? I'm still pretty shaken over the whole thing. Faran
Wow, that's a rough experience. Glad they seem okay. Got any Methylene Blue? Never seems to bother any of my fry and a decent fungus stopper. Melafix is good stuff, just don't overdose it. Stress Coat was a good step. At least help build up the slime layer faster. Not much else to do but get Mel and watch! Good move removing the parents. Something I wish I'd done when they spawned in the comm tank. Today I killed a BIG Congo Tetra male rearranging my fish room. It happens. Murphys law says that if it can go wrong, it does!!
ljtan55
Thanks for that Faran, feelin a lot calmer now. Just hope the head fins heal back to normal. The baby fry are starting to free swim now, so will be headin to the store tomorrow mornin for microworms and melafix. Just a quick question, melafix and meth blue at the same time or one after the other? Sorry to hear about the tetra man, bad luck. Who knows how many ottos I've squished every time I move the driftwood. Hows the rearranging goin? Almost done?
Faran
using both at the same time shouldn't cause any probs. They're both really mild natural remedies. I was suggesting using blue until you got Mel from the LFS (which should be about now anyways). You should put a call out for locals with microworms. Most people are happy to give a starter culture to a new fish keeper - might charge you for an established culture but it still won't be anywhere near LFS prices The moving around was busy but good. Have the different species of corys in different tanks now and everyone is settled and eating. The remaining 4 Congos eyes looked cloudy so I hit the tank with Meth Blue and they came right by the time we got home from dinner. Now I get to fill up the breeding tanks. Keep us posted on your Rams and babies, mate!

Alan
Ummmmmm ! ! ! I did suggest to use an airline tube to syphon out the babies. Then the net could have been used for the parents. But then we all learn from our experiences, both good and bad. Hope the parents recover okay, and good luck with the babies. By the way, BBS is the best go for the babies, and remember, don't feed UNTIL the babies are free swimming and put some snails into their tank to act as scavengers, as left over food can be, and is fatal to babies. ljtan55
Thanks ryanjury, I'm close to Howick. Thanks for the offer but I think it should be alright, raising BBS for the babies now. Everything is looking really good at the moment, the spiky hair is coming back up for both the parents. Hopefully it'll be a speedy recovery. Lol i was gonna actually put off the moving babies till I got a long airline hose, but my girlfriend insisted that we save the babies straight away from the evil siamese algae eaters, live and learn. Now i just gotta figure out what Im gonna do with a brood of rams!
antwan
I would suggest you get a microworm culture, they are handy. Ram fry are very small compared to a lot of other cichlids and usually dont go for bbs straight away, mine didnt. Also, they are good to have when (if you dont have two) you are starting up a new batch of bbs and dont have access to live ones for 24 hours. Good luck with the rams, they are great fish.
