Loopy
Hi just after some quick advice on what i can do for two very unhappy angelfish. Bought them and their tank off TM the other day and just moved everything today. tank has not had much maintenance done for a long time so water is very green but the wee pleco has kept algae down. tank occupants are 2 black veiltail Angels, 3 neons, 3 albino cories, 1 pleco, 1 penguin tetra and 2 redtail sharks. Both angels are now in the tank by themselves, everyone else has been put in other tanks, they are looking rather battered up fins are a bit raw and torn up and one of the angels has cloudy eyes. I would hate for these guys to give up and die as they are absolutely stunning fish! But they look really sad.
sharn
it could be something more but ive often read of fish coming from poor conditions that develop cloudy eyes which go away when the conditions are improved? there is 'disease' called cloudy eye, im not too up on that though, it seems its normally bacterial. sorry i couldnt be of more help but good luck with them p.s. keep those RTS out of neon etc enviroments- theyll eat em
Loopy
Thank you for that. I was hoping the cloudy eyes might have been an enviroment or stess symptom. I had a severum who's eyes clouded up when i shifted her to a new tank once and they came right but i had never experienced it before so i was not sure. i am worried it is going to take ages to clear up this tank!! i can barely see a couple of inches into it! it is a 3ft by 18 inches by 17 inches. Oh and the snails are starting to come out of the shingle now and there are a LOT of them. i will fish them out as often as i can.
Pegasus
Hi Loopy, Are you saying that you are using the "existing" water that was in the tank when the previous owner had it.. and that you moved it with some of the water in it..? Bill.
sharn
probably best to do some water changes of around 30% every couple of days to try and clear it up, it might also go thru a mini cycle if its been disrupted alot. just something to keep an eye out for, im sure with a bit of maintenance youll get it looking superb posted same time as bill  also its best to keep an eye on her just incase it isnt enviromental
Loopy
Hey Bill, In answer to your Q, I haven't used any of the existing water, all the water in the tank is fresh but i am thinking i should have rinsed the shingle perhapes? All the original water from the tank was disposed of and the shingle was taken out to lighten the tank for lifting. but i just chucked it back in when we got it back to our place. I am wondering if maybe that wasn't such a good idea. ATM i think i am more worried about the angels. they have had a busy day, being moved to a new home etc and i thionk the two red tail sharks were nasty bullies to them. i think the eyes are slowly starting to clear up on the angel. Pegasus
I am wondering if maybe that wasn't such a good idea. Certainly wasn't a good idea.. but it's done now If the tank has no fish in it now, I would boil.. or dump the gravel and give the tank a good clean and sterilize.. then set it up again. More than likely there would have been a lot of anerobic or bad bacteria in the old gravel.. plus goodness knows what else. Hope they come right. herefishiefishie
I am with Bill on this one. I would take the angels out, place them into a bucket with the other tank water & an airate the water. Towel over bucket too. Rinse the filter out well, place in other tank & run. Empty water out of the tank completely. Rinse the gravel out in a bucket, how? As Bill said boiling water. I would boil up a large pot of water. And pour it into the gravel, cook the snails at the same time. {yummy }I would do this a few times. Swirling the water around, leave to sit for a few minutes each time. Then run a hose threw the gravel until water becomes clear. Hopefully taking the coked snails & any "rubbish" left behind in the gravel. Or follow the first part & buy new gravel, then do the last step. Your angels won't get any better to yo do something about it. Buy a good neutraliser that helps promote slime coat growth, or add a little salt to the water.{1tbsp/80litres} When you fill your tank back up use some water out of already exixting tank. Loopy
well gravel has been washed and rinsed etc and put back into tank. (can't afford to rush out and buy new gravel atm) Filled tank with fresh water. Have rinsed out the filter. I can now see the heater at the back of the tank and the picture on the wall behind! :bounce: i will leave it to settle over the rest of the day
Loopy
Hi Guys. Soggy's other half here. Here is a link for the tank we are on about. Do an expired search for it. Auction Number: 60029751 It's looking good now though will do a few more water changes. We have seen the Angels having a go at each other so am wondering if it's worth putting a few Danios in as target fish? Cheers
Loopy
Hey there Mystic! how are you? Yeah the tank is awful huh! we couldn't see the fish to catch them! I will go and take a photo of it now. Got a couple of big platies in the tank with the angels. Now the angels are following the platies round slowly instead of getting grumpy with each other. Faran
Like most cichlids a change in environment will cause a reestablishment of dominancy. They're just sorting the pecking order. Give it a few days and they'llbe fine. If you feel that one is being damaged too severly separate them, let them heal and reintroduce them. Danios and target fish are not really any use. Good luck! Loopy
Loopy's other half again. To top it all off the tank now has a crack in the bottom. Have just drained tank and relocated fish. Though not happy with the angels in one of our spare small tanks due to space. Will get a new base cut this week and completely remake it. It never rains it pours!!!!

SpidersWeb
Congtratulations on the save! I'm still working on my 'sick fish procedure' and know it can be a bit of a stress, so I'm sure you're releaved!
me love fishy
Good on you Loopy for saving those poor fishies. I think it is disgusting that person on trade me kept fish in those conditions!! Pity you can't get the person you bought the tank off to give you a partial refund since you have to replace some of the glass now. good luck with your angels, I'm sure they appreciate you.
