BrineShrimp Guy
Hi everyone New to this site, and trying to find some information. I can find lots of information about Infusoria, but it all seems to be about fresh water Infusoria. Does anyone know where I may be able to find information on Marine Infusoria. I thank you for your patience. BS
wasp
You really have 2 options, copepods, and rotifers. Both come in several different species and sizes. Copepods, which can be seen by eye, are bigger than rotifers, and exist in many marine aquariums. Rotifers have to be cultured seperately, which may involve considerable effort and knowledge. BrineShrimp Guy
Thanks for that, I was specifically wanting Infusoria because of its size. Rotifers and Copepods are to large for my application. BS
suphew
Aren't rotifers microsocpic? How small do you need? I have heard of putting seaweed into a bucket of sea water and stiring every one in a while, and using the water from this for very fine critters
BrineShrimp Guy
Maybe I need to be specific about my application. I want to change what I am feeding brineshrimp to a live food in order to reduce biowaste within the culture tank and to increase nutritional value of the BS. Livestock in the culture tank is 10K+ BS/L. Infusoria are smaller than Rotifers, and some rotifers are preditor. Larger species of Rotifer are visible to the naked eye, Infusoria is not. I have to admit to not knowing what species of Rotifers are available here. I have started testing a start culture for Infusoria using a fresh water recipe; all I did was replace the fresh water with marine water. It is currently on it's second day, and stinks like heck, so in a couple of days I will put some of the culture on a slide and put it under the microscope. The next thing will be identfying them to see what I ended up with. BS
suphew
Okay, sounds like you are after hufa's?? You can get cultures in NZ but very difficult, you really need to know some one 'in the know'. And before you ask, sorry I have no idea where you can get them. But I have seen them. I have grown them to over 12mm (1/2") if you want the food recipe. Send me a PM or Email. Bill.
petplanet
From what I understand you need infusoria which is basically like the freshwater one but uses saltwater - big algae culture. This is then used to feed the rotifers which are then fed to the brineshrimp. You need multipule cultures of both as algae and rotifer cultures are prone to crashing.
