TradeMe is an excellent source of plants (plantman and waterplantz are the members you want to look up). IMO I'd recommend you fill your tank with water now and turn everything on, to let the cycling begin (allowing good bacteria to build up). Then add your plants when you find ones you like. I'd recommend some plants, but I buy what I like the look of. You may also add a school of glowlight tetra or danio's to help with the cycling of your tank. Ya don't wanna just chuck all your fish in at once. The ammonia spikes etc will make them very unhappy.
antwan
Hi there, you may have some problems with the undergravel filter and your plants. Plants dont like their roots to be disturbed very much, and the constant flow of water pass them could make them grow to their full ability. Kookie
Hi there, you may have some problems with the undergravel filter and your plants. I have an undergravel filter in my 3 ft tank and I have problems with excessive plant growth. I also don't use any additives to enhance plant growth, just fish and light. Hi Thanks, It's going to be tropical what temperature should i put heater to, and should i put some of the aqua clear in to get rid of the chlorine. What about the pumps should i just flic the other one on trade me or use it to any suggestions. For the temp, it really depends on what type of fish you want to keep. I have a community tank with over 16 species of fish (67 all up so far) I keep the temp at around 26 and it seems to keep all my fish happy, to the point where they breed excessively LOL. In regards to your pumps, I would suggest holding on to the spare, as you just never know when you might need it. Always pays to have a back up. With the water, you can add water ager or aqua clear if you want, or you can allow the water to stand in suitable containers for 24 - 48 hours to age, thus not needing any additives. djay
Hi all up and running have turned pump down to low is that alright, heater set at 26 and on 3 uplifts all working especially the one that is connected straight to the pump, airstone as well and wheel on lighthouse, and 3 caps aqua clear. Need to find some plants, does it need to be tetras or danios to help cycle or can it be convicts or something else Guppies I dont know any sugestions there . Thanks again everyone it's looking good so far.
Kookie
While your tank is cycling, having some fish help as they produce waste which the good bacteria like. I suggested the danio's / tetra because they are very hardy and can tolerate a cycling tank with minimal issues. I'm not sure if convicts will be ok, so it might pay to do some research. Guppies should be fine also.
djay
Hi Kookie, would you mind telling me what sorts of fish you have and maybe your plants that you have. Thanks Dianne
djay
Would they have to be adult ones or would juveniles be alright to help the cycling out
antwan
convicts should be sweet, i have a mate who completely re-did his convict tank. he washed all the gravel, filters and glass so there would have been absolutely no bacteria in there at all. Then he just chucked the convicts back in and they were breeding within days
djay
I was thinking swordtails would they be alright as I want it to community tank and i thought that conveicts aren't very hospitable to others is that right.

sharn
of course you can do the fishless cycle which is less stressful to fish (obviously lol). people dont often do it that way though cause they cant handle having a empty tank for a month but i like it cause it gives me time to fiddle with things. also if you use fish to cycle you will need to do a water change every day or two of around 20-30%, and will have to get the test kits to moniter levels (need them eventually anyway)
