YAAAY!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: whatever Tim had in his water I don't know but yesterday I noticed one of the electric yellows holding. I've never seen it before but it's so odvious when you do.

I'm not sure if she was holding b4 she came here as I didn't notice it the day they arrived but they were a bit skidish so I could have over looked it. I just want to know what to do and what to expect.

I have a 15LT holding "tank" that I could fill, w/water from the one they r in, and pop her in there? Any and all advise would be most appriciated.

Told ya :) Looks like she's holding a mouthful of food, right? You can put her in her own tank or "strip" the eggs or fry from her if you're very intent on raising them straight away. Here's a how-to on stripping. You basically hold the mouth open with the round end of a paper clip and shake her in the water until she spits out the eggs/fry.

I think the best choice is to wait 2 weeks until the fry are free swimming. All up to you, though.

I'm pleasantly surprised she held them all way down to you!

me 2. It kinda looks like she's grown an adams apple and she's not opening her mouth very wide or often. I have no plans to strip her, not that confident about that atleast not yet. However I might pop her n that 15Lt in about a week? I don't want to mover her to soon as I'd like to let her have the run of the 3 footer for as long as possible with still saving the fry if possible.

Hows that ah. Great timing. I'd say as a guess they probably bred the morning of the move.

Just keep an eye on the female the first couple of times she breeds.

The mums can starve themselves a bit, first time mums are funny, they really hold down lips shut firm, keep miles away from anything...

As they get older they tend to eat enough to keep healthy. The joys of nature.

Usually done 3 ways here

!) Strip female straight away & have the eggs in a tumbler.

2) Strip female at 2 weeks, this way young are free swimming. Good for those who work. Just mark on tank, calendar the day you noticed holding.

3) Catch the female out of breeding tank & into a holding tank. Let nature take its course. Good for the first couple of times as first time mums are small & hard to hold. Plus this way, females practice holding..

Good luck, hope all goes well, keep us posted.

Well, they were already holding when we broke down the tank and got a good look at them so she may have been holding for a few days already. I'd go with option #3 on herefishiefishie's post and just put her in a tank by herself with some rock caves to do her thing. 15ltr is TINY though....

No I won't be putting her into the 15Lt, it's really only for hosp or emergency. I do, however, have a 4 footer that I need to clean out, set up and all that I "borrowed" from a friend

I think instead of stressing any of them out with another move so quickly I'm just gonna let nature take it's course this time round. I'll be moving them all out of there anyways as I've got to move the tank onto the new stand, after it's painted.

My last question, for now, is will the female starve themselves to death and how can I prevent her from starving at all?

If she is still holding at 3 weeks, re post up. If need be I can try talk you through stripping...I wouldn't be worried, well actually  with first timers I do check in on them. only once or twice a day though.

(touchwood) I have never lost a female from holding to long, but I have seen a few females get pretty thin.
